This film was originally going to be directed by Shawn Levy, but he left the project after disagreements with the Minecraft developers as they thought that his idea did not suit the game.

Shortly after the first release of a teaser trailer, Minecraft creator "Notch" Persson expressed approval, having no apparent involvement in the film. He jokingly said "I probably would've even agreed to Uwe Boll making it." In 2014, Persson claimed there was an early concept film to be produced by Roy Lee and Jill Sobel Messick, which fell through some time after.
