As a longtime Minecraft player, I've waited years for this movie-and while it didn't blow me away, it didn't disappoint either.

The film delivers solid humor and entertainment, backed by impressive CGI. Jack Black and Jason Momoa absolutely shine, but the story falls short with flat character development and a predictable, overly shallow plot that could have been so much more.

If you are looking for peak cinema with in-depth meanings and inspirations, I do not recommend watching this movie.

But if you are just looking for a simple, fun, and enjoyable movie, this might be the one for you.

I see a lot of people criticizing this movie heavily I don't get why I mean it's a kids movie. It's not supposed to make any sense and honestly, I kinda like the way it is because it's dumb, but it's funny, dumb and enjoyable and plus this movie was special because everybody in the theater while I was watching Clapped every time a famous line for the movie was said and it was so funny when was the last time that a movie made people get together and actually enjoy each scene this movie did. I like that they reference Technoblade too. He would've loved this movie especially the reactions. If I had to read this movie, I would give it a 7 it honestly was enjoyable and people are too quick to criticize it but my point is that it isn't perfect but it's the people you watched with that make it enjoyable.

The film is quirky and somewhat stays true to the game. The cast is unhinged to the point where it works. Sure there are some cliches here with the story and then as well as character flaws but the film paces itself well and delivers a well rounded family film. Jack Black does the absolute best with what he is given as well as Jason does. Both of them lead the project with grace. As for some of the supporting characters, they seem to have a few tropes that were heard of before. I've played Minecraft for 10+ years and this is the best version of film we're going to get at this high of budget. Is the film perfect, no. But it is indeed quite enjoyable.

Jason Mamoa was absolutely fantastic in this movie. To me and my wife he was the highlight. He seriously deserves an Oscar for bringing a caricature to life and making us care about his character. The CGI was also fantastic: vivid, richly imagined, and engrossing. It was remarkable that a majority of the film occurs in the Minecraft world and yet it (and the real human characters in it) felt truly real. Truly outstanding work by the whole production team. There was also a lot of laugh-out-loud moments, and over the top silliness which was a ton of fun. On the way home all of us (me, my wife, and our three kids: 13,10, 8) were sharing our favorite moments and quips from the film. Our kids loved it, and from the engagement I heard of all the kids around us (some much younger than ours), everyone was having a good time. I'd say this is a fun family film anyone from 4 to adult (I'm 47) will enjoy. And thanks again to Jason Mamoa for committing so hard to his character and Jack Black for bringing the music and enthusiasm.

If Sonic is an 8 this is barely a 4. 5 if I am being generous. It's clear that many 15 year olds enjoy the movie because of the social aspect and the memes and game references, but those alone do not support a good movie.

The visuals are actually really good, but ultimately the story is possibly one of the most cringe-worthy media i have ever consumed. She hulk looks like Oppenheimer compared to this. There is comedy, and then there is farce, and this one is much closer to farce than actual comedy.

I think one thing Sonic movie did a lot lot better than the minecraft movie is that while it makes a lot of game references and also juvenile humor, ultimately it tries to tell a coherent story with structure. Same wth Mario movie. Meanwhile, this movie feels extremely lacking in actually trying to tell a story that makes sense in itself. The acting didn't really help either, I can see Jack Black and Jason Momoa really trying, but quite frankly I didn't really enjoy their characters a lot.

A Minecraft Movie is an unapologetic cash grab from Warner Brothers that is, somehow, fun. Starring Jack Black as himself under the alias of Steve, the film has enough zaniness to keep children from getting bored and enough charm to keep adults from hating it entirely. Other cast members include Jason Momoa, Danielle Brooks, Emma Myers, and Sebastian Hansen. Most of them are fine, but when compared to Momoa's overly zany performance, the gap in acting quality becomes noticeable. Also, for a film that boasts creativity, there are next to no crumbs of imagination to be found here. So, with uneven acting and lazy writing, the film was destined to be a misfire, right? Well, you may be surprised to hear that my verdict is no. It is ultimately an entertaining blockbuster, thanks in no small part to the film embracing its own silliness.

The first noticeable aspect of the film is its computer-generated world. The CGI team did a great job translating the bizarre, blocky world of Minecraft to the silver screen. The colors pop, and the creatures retain their signature designs-now updated with fluid expressions and impressive texture work. The environments are beautiful and clearly crafted with care. However-and this is one big caveat-the blend of real humans with the Minecraft world creates an unfortunate eyesore. Remember those Spy Kids movies from the early 2000s? Well, this $150 million film features green screen effects that are only slightly better than those. It does the world-building a huge disservice.

The characters are also a mixed bag. Jack Black is always pleasant to see, but he's not a character, he's just Jack Black. Jason Momoa does the heavy lifting as he plays a washed out, egotistical video-game fanatic. Gone are the suave vibes he usually brings. Momoa plays what is potentially his goofiest role yet, and he fully commits to it! The others are not necessarily spectacular, partially due to the lackluster script they've been given. Also, expecting an Oscar worthy performance from the younger actors would be simply unfair. The villain is a cliché, but a good one. She reminds me of an '80s villain: little motivation, diabolical antics, and a commanding voice. Aside from Momoa, she was my favorite character. Even though Jack Black doesn't act at all, what he brings to the table is a lot of contagious fun. He clearly has no boundaries and he seems to be having a blast jumping around a green screen doing... well, whatever it is Jack Black does.

The plot is the most corporate element that is put on the crafting table. It is basically a Goodwill version of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which also had Jack Black in it. There is nothing interesting that happens, narratively speaking. Every plot point can be seen by the time the logo appears on the screen. I understand that kids need a breezy story in order to not feel overwhelmed; but this is simple to a point where the comedy has to pull the writing's slack. Most fatally, if the jokes do not land for someone, they will find almost nothing worthwhile. Even the Minecraft pigs wouldn't eat slop like this. But, at the very least, the story never was a component in the source material; so, the lack of a refined one is not very offensive, by any means.

Lastly, and this isn't to the credit or fault of the movie, the theatrical experience can wildly vary. Because of internet memes, teenagers are obliged to clap, cheer, and sometimes spill popcorn over Jack Black making Minecraft references. In my experience, there was some cheering and clapping, but it was harmless fun and it ceased by the time the line ended. However, multiple families have issued refunds because many modern high-schoolers don't have manners. Some jump on seats, others stand up and run around and shriek like they are on fire. This does nothing to my overall score, but it is worth mentioning if you consider buying tickets. Disregarding the teenage craze, this film is a fun evening at the theater, especially if you have children eager for it.

Summary: A Minecraft Movie has the imagination of a zombie and it chickens out on making an enchanted story, but there is enough energy here to liven up this blocky adventure.

Wow. Just wow. The Minecraft movie is everything I never wanted and more. It's like someone spilled a box of Legos, hired a screenwriter with a severe case of pixelated nostalgia, and said, "You know what this needs? Drama. Emotional arcs. And somehow... explosions?"

Let me be clear: I went into this cinematic masterpiece expecting a visual diamond and walked out with emotional gravel. The plot? Honestly, it was hard to focus while my soul was slowly exiting through the back of my head. Characters popped in and out like glitchy NPCs. Emotional development? Less depth than a puddle in a desert biome.

BUT-oh, and it's a big, glorious BUT-Jack Black. Jack Freaking Black. A shining beacon of chaotic charm in a world made of literal blocks. Every time he spoke, I felt joy. He could've read the End User License Agreement and I would've clapped. He brought life, charisma, and unhinged energy to a movie that otherwise felt like watching someone else build a house for two hours.

Honestly, they should've just called it Jack Blackcraft and let him voice every character, narrate the story, sing the soundtrack, and maybe play Steve, a creeper, AND the dragon. I'd watch that movie twice.

Final verdict: 1 star for the film, 2 stars for Jack Black.

Directed by Jared Hess and written by an astounding six writers, this is obviously an adaptation to a video game that is the last game on earth you would think would have a movie adaptation.

This plot is simple. Four individuals get sucked into a portal that takes them to the Overworld, where they have to find a way out. By video game adaptation standards, this is incredibly straightforward and I'm extremely grateful for that. For whatever reason, so many writers try to over complicate plots to adaptations, which sinks so many of them.

I don't want to spoil much but I will say this is not your typically structured film, which seems very much the intention. It's Jack Black and Jason Momoa teaming up, so there was no way this was going to stick to tradition and that's what makes it enjoyable.

It really doesn't try to deflect from the fun at all. There's not a lot of drama here. It sprinkles a little in, but nothing that's going to suck you in. They want the rest to do that.

The world is big and colorful and really fits the game. The effects aren't perfect by any stretch of the imagination but that sort of fits the game as well, which makes it work.

The cast is wonderful. Everyone is just so committed and into it, which is a joy.

So overall, it's fun period. I'm not entirely sure what most were expecting. Were people expecting the Godfather or something? No, it's Minecraft, it's a simple game that's fun. Anyone expecting this movie to be anything else were raising the bar way too high.

They played a new "Superman" clip and trailer before "A Minecraft Movie." My excitement for that DCU launcher has increased significantly. I won't spoil what it features, but seeing it felt special. I felt shivers through my body because of how awesome that preview was. Of course, they released it online a few hours later, but watching it on a Dolby screen was astounding. July 11 can't come soon enough. Wait, this is a review of "A Minecraft Movie."

Unlike most video game adaptations I've seen, I have prior experience playing Minecraft, undeniably one of the most popular video games in history and the best-selling of all time. I used to play it for hours on end, and it never got tiring. YouTubers made their careers posting Minecraft gameplay videos. I can't downplay Minecraft's legacy and impact, and ever since 2014, there has been talk about turning it into a movie. After eleven long years in which people like me thought it'd never come out, we finally have it, and since I'm both a fan of the game and movies in general, I can hopefully tell whether or not this caters exclusively to one group or both. To an extent, it does for both audiences, I'll admit, but I didn't exactly like it.

Let me start with the visuals. The entire VFX crew brought iconic Minecraft characters and places to stunning life. I was in awe at how much I wouldn't mind living in this world.

Next, the actors do a solid job. Jack Black, Sebastian Hansen, and Danielle Brooks all do well with their characters, although Jason Momoa and Emma Myers as Garrett and Natalie were the best, in my opinion. Though issues with the screenplay exist, the cast (mostly) makes their dialogue work.

Yes, the references to the game made me smile a bit. Then again, any Minecraft player would be happy seeing their favorite elements from the game translated to the big screen. That may be the saving factor for most people, given that they've played it extensively. It's fun to notice the callbacks to the game, and that's sometimes not bad. I didn't find it detrimental to the overall experience.

For the remaining positives, two scenes - including the final act - were wildly fun and had me excited, while Jared Hess's directing was vibrant, and the runtime rarely drags.

Before moving into the mixed-to-negative aspects of this experience, remember how most of us collectively disliked the film's first trailer? I admit, I didn't like it, but the film strangely became my 9th most anticipated movie of 2025, and I ceased to mind the following trailer. It's important to keep expectations in check, but I couldn't help but have hope that it may subvert my worries and be outstanding. Unfortunately, it didn't happen, but it's not the worst video game adaptation or movie of 2025, and I understand that you may be able to move past the flaws and have a delightful time. Either way, I have to be honest.

As I foreshadowed earlier, the screenplay from Chris Bowman, Chris Galletta, Gavin James, Hubbel Palmer, and Neil Widener was very weird, not weak per se. Minecraft as a game is conceptually simple, but I feel this film's narrative isn't straightforward enough. Additionally, the movie feels like it has an identity crisis at times. It's a comedy, yet they try to make the Overworld - it's not called Minecraft, although they name-drop it for a completely different reason - this big deal, but I feel they didn't do a good enough job with that.

I saw missed potential with the villains as well. They're not terrible, but I never felt the threat of Malgosha or her piglin army. In their defense, I didn't invest in the central five as much as the movie wanted me to.

Oh, and there's a side plot that, no spoilers, didn't add to the story whatsoever. It's semi-cute, but in all seriousness, what was it doing here?

Going back to the comedy, I only laughed twice. I'm not angry that I didn't think it was funny; I'm just disappointed. These are jokes geared more toward younger audiences, but they don't overstay their welcome as much as other films.

One more thing, and it's not as much of a bother for me: they go into song-and-dance four times here. A song towards the end aside, it feels like the team only did it because "Peaches" from "The Super Mario Bros. Movie" was so beloved. The songs are fine inclusions that don't entirely justify their inclusion.

Overall, if you had fears beforehand, they're in "A Minecraft Movie," but if you expected a "Snow White" failure, prepare to be pleasantly surprised. It's simultaneously the best and the worst film I hoped and feared it'd be, but it has two target audiences in mind: younger audiences and dedicated Minecraft fans, both of whom may be okay with an imperfect feature.

Technically, the acting, directing, breathtaking visuals, and decent screenplay make the technical score an 8/10.

For the enjoyment score, it was a 5/10 for me. However, I may be in the minority who feel this way. An 8/10 experience is in the cards if you only want a fun adventure and could care less about its weaker elements. I can't be mad at it, because it did its job, even if I didn't admit it at first: entertain!

Get ready, dear viewers, because if you thought a video game based on creative freedom and exploration could be turned into even a vaguely inspiring movie, you are in for a brutal awakening. The Minecraft movie is a cinematic operation that to call "poor" is a galactic understatement. We are faced with a product of disarming, sterile simplicity.

The plot, assuming one can use such a pompous term to describe the feeble thread that binds one scene to the next, is staggeringly trivial. It seems as if the screenwriters have taken the most basic concepts of the game--building, survival, perhaps a generic villain--and stretched them without any inventiveness, without a flicker of originality that would tickle the viewer's curiosity in the slightest. There is no depth, no subtext, absolutely nothing beyond the surface of a beginner's tutorial in video gaming.

The characters? Two-dimensional specks moving around the screen without any compelling motivation, without a shred of charisma. Their interactions are drab, the dialogues bland, and their supposed "adventures" do not elicit the slightest emotion. It almost seems as if they were placed there out of pure contractual obligation, as anonymous pawns in a hasty narrative lacking ambition.

With quotes such as "Water bucket, RELEASE" and "They LOVE crushing a loaf" this cinematic masterpiece truly stands out among its predecessors. 10/10 would recommend, smash and pretend again.

Though you might not expect much at first glance, at the second one you might, and at the third you're getting closer, until the fourth where you can truly appreciate the different aspects of the film. Jack Black's acting and line delivery, Jason Momoa's extravaganza and the overall chemistry of the acting crew. The world building is out of this world (literally) and the CGI is from the future

All I can say now is simply... "As a child, I yearned for the mines." 🗣🔥🔥🔥🔥

The Minecraft Movie (2025) is actually kinda fun - not perfect, but it's got charm. Jack Black as Steve is hilarious, and the visuals totally nail that classic pixel look from the game, which is cool to see on the big screen.

The story's pretty basic though, like your typical "team of misfits save the world" thing, and sometimes it gets a little too goofy for its own good. I just hoped there was some depth to it.

Still, it's got heart, some solid laughs (shoutout to Jennifer Coolidge's character), and it's clearly made for fans. If you're into Minecraft or just want a light, colorful adventure, it's worth checking out.

I think the big dogs in the industry missed the mark on this. I get that <5 yr old children are a larger market. It's money.. but wow, this was so horribly slapped together that I sincerely cannot believe mojang would endorse this. Within the first 15 minutes, you notice Jack Black is glowing green from the green screen. The CGI is terrible. This shouldn't have been done this way. Please make another for the fans who've been around since conception. We're all in our 20's, 30'a and beyond. Jack black is too corny anymore.. Jason?? Why...

Films aren't good anymore..They are purely a cash grab & this proves it -in my opinion, of course.

The story is weak, the villain is forgettable, and the humor just doesn't land. I only laughed twice the entire time, and even that felt like a stretch. With five writers involved, you'd expect at least a few clever moments, but instead we get tired, recycled jokes that either go nowhere or get dragged out until they're painful. Jack Black is doing his usual over-the-top shtick, and Jason Momoa feels like he's in a completely different movie, awkwardly bouncing between fake tough guy and loud, screaming goofball. A couple of silly bits might get a smirk, but overall it's an obnoxious, lazy, and tone-deaf adaptation. One of the most forgettable video game movies I've seen in a while.

Minecraft is certainly a Movie, and if you didn't know already, the main character is Steve, as you know the blueness of him gives it away. Although that aside, Minecraft is a mindless, and fun affair, although a few faults in the movie takes it down a notch.

The Effects near-the-end caved in, and looked like the green screen was on show, which was slightly effected. Another thing, is the creativity. Surprisingly, for a Minecraft film, nothing was evidently creative, not much was built aside from Houses and a grand looking Castle, so I felt more could of been made. But I enjoyed the colours and the objects, as they did resemble the game very closely and opted to go down that route was a fantastic one, as it shows the bricks, the building work, and the craftsmanship that made that game so fulfilling and fun to play.

Although, I did enjoy the movies energy, it was slightly rushed at times, especially in the 3rd act as mentioned. But Jack Black gives an all-out crazy performance as Steve, he puts his heart and soul into this, and he's always been fun and an energetic person on-screen, so as you could tell, he was having a blast. Even if he didn't resemble Steve in any conceivable way, he was still a shining light. And he made the movie feel humorous and adventurous. Giving it that top-tear energy that's sometimes missed in big Blockbusters.

The script is fairly hammy and cheesy, with one-liners, family drama. But all this doesn't add much and feels like it's their to breath time, only the writing isn't up to par. As the Siblings feel like they've only just met, and the other characters don't get much to work with, and sometimes they do look confused rather then anything else. As they don't know where to look, the expressions. It does feel tonely inconsistent in that respect, but the films humour, heart and passion is definitely to be admired.

The world-building was also fun, seeing the Villages and the evil sadistic ones made the feel exciting and added that layer of adventure and optimism. You didn't know what to expect next, and the spiders design was mastered, it really did look like the games version that came to life, and that was wonderful. They looked scary and intimidating, and the skeletons and the Zombies made for some fun action-sequences.

The Villains motive is plain and simple, and that can mean it can effect the characters, as they'd have to stay on their feet and miss anything that's thrown their way, again the creativity wasn't vast, object comes their way, they escape. And that's basically what was happening. Jumping from one tree to another, only a stone is between them. That best describes the villainous arc and her story, and the villains as a whole, the Pig Villages.

But their are more positives, the look of the world was amazing, as it did feel like a live-version of the film brought to our screens, and the Movie handles the villains, the designs and the costumes fairly well in my eyes, brilliantly crafted suit. And some memorable scenes definitely was put out for memes, but genuinely speaking I had a fun time.

I'd rate this film a 6 out of 10 Because I enjoyed the humour, Jack Black's energy and performance altogether, but the films creativity and 3rd act was heavily flustered. But a nice Entertaining time, definitely would recommend it.

3/10. I mean, it's not the worst brain rot I was expecting. It's a movie about Minecraft that might appeal to kids and hardcore fans. That's it.

It's cringy and stupid to the max. I'm not gonna lie, I chuckled a couple of times. The cinephile in me wants to bash this film a thousand ways till Halloween. The turn of my brain, idiot side of me thinks it was just meh. At least it's lighthearted and optimistic. It's not a good movie. It's deprived from any artistic value and serious filmmaking. Just soulless corporate IP stuff. Maybe young kids might like it. I dunno.

Seeing this in 4DX made it bearable. I also tried out a fantastic new IPA beer I've never had before. Lovely taste and a great balance of hops, alcohol, and bitterness. I hope I can find a six pack of it somewhere.

Is it the best video game adaptation? Absolutely not. Is it a good movie? Absolutely not. Is it still entertaining? Absolutely.

This is probably the most interesting video game adaptation ever, because live action for a Minecraft movie is actually illogical. But at least they tried to do something with the concept. However, the movie drags a lot at the beginning. There's a story that wasn't needed. It was really nice when all the characters were in the Minecraft world, because that's when things got more interesting. You saw Jack Black and Jason Momoa and the others crafting, interacting with the world, and exuding great Minecraft vibes. The story was okay, and the laughs mostly came from the situational comedy, less so from the actual jokes.

Overall, the movie is worth watching, as it has its charm. But for a potential second Minecraft movie, I would like to see a better implementation in terms of humor and story, as I generally want to see more of this Minecraft film version, but not necessarily with these weaknesses.

No, I mean like a drunk raccoon breaking into a wedding cake factory-chaotic, sticky, and somehow shirtless for no reason.

I waited all damn year for this film. I marked the release date on my calendar. I ignored my family. I skipped therapy. I said, "This movie will heal me." But no... Jack Black came in like a caffeinated middle-school theater kid who just watched Ace Ventura for the first time. He was throwing jokes at the wall like spaghetti noodles, hoping something would stick-and guess what? It didn't. Not a single noodle. The wall stayed dry, Jack.

He tried so hard to be funny that it physically hurt. Like, I actually pulled a muscle in my neck from cringing. I whispered, "Why is he yelling like that?" into the void.

By the end, I was rooting for the villain. Hell, I was rooting for the credits. I've seen more subtlety in a car alarm. I've seen better timing in a microwave beep. Jack Black turned comedy into a war crime-and we, the audience, were the civilians.

My kid is an avid Minecraft player and that compelled me to see this with my kids. Must say totally mesmerized by the colorful and solid humor and sheer entertainment it brought to all of us.

Jack Black and Jason Momoa absolutely shine with comedic timing and so does the great supporting cast in Emma Meyers, Sebastian Hansen and Danielle Brooks. Be ready for a fun filled crazy adventure of a film with its core moral "Its harder to create than destroy".

This movie will bag a sure fire $500m for its budget of $150m, with its impressive CGI.

Jennifer Coolidge's role seemed to be an annoying factor somewhat.

Overall a great early summer Popcorn flick best suited for IMAX.

Ok so I'm an adult with kids so this isn't exactly the perfect movie for my demographic. However, I have played a good amount of Minecraft myself. Having said that, this movie felt nothing like the game to me. It was like artificial grape flavor trying to convince you it tastes like grapes. Sure it's purple and kind of sour but that's about all the two have in common. I get that it's not supposed to really be taken seriously but this film is just a bright and loud mess.

Minecraft is a sandbox game. That means you can do whatever you want within the confines of the game world. Basically, you can make it whatever you want it to be. So the aspect of giving Steve a backstory and an arch nemesis is a weird way to go. But I get it, the movie has to have a story. And this one technically did. I did like the way the world looked and that part I did enjoy a lot. But the praise ends there. The characters were all useless and just kind of thrown in for structure. None of them were interesting or added much to the movie.

Jack Black has always been an actor who throws himself into his part with the same over the top charisma he always does and this movie is no exception. However, the lines for his character were kind of strange and didn't really fit in the movie. Jason Momoa's character was by far the weirdest one and was just distracting to me. As was the interaction between his character and Steve. There was some uncomfortable and slightly not-straight feeling moments between the two. Not that there's anything wrong with that but it just felt very strange in this movie. Overall, it was semi-entertaining but really failed at being what it should have been about and was just a loud mess.

I LOVED this movie. Going into the theater, I was skeptical, but when the audience started shouting the lines I was convinced. Hearing "I am Steve" shouted by about 50 people in a cinema with Jack Black on screen was inspiring, and the part where he goes "RELEASE!" might be one of the greatest moments in film history. Everyone was having fun: the kids, the teenagers sitting in front of me and even the elderly couple who brought their grandchildren in the seats to my left. If I could give this more than 10 stars, I would do it in a heartbeat. 11/10, great movie, I'm going to watch it next week.

As a fan of the game, I had high hopes for the Minecraft movie, but it turned out to be a complete letdown. The plot felt like it was cobbled together in Creative Mode by someone who had never actually played the game. The characters were one-dimensional, the dialogue was cringeworthy, and the pacing dragged endlessly. Instead of capturing the charm and open-ended spirit of Minecraft, it forced a generic adventure story into a blocky world that deserved better. Visually, it was fine, but without any heart or originality, it was just another cash grab trying to ride on the game's popularity!!!!

So awful! Why can't we make a perfect movie instead using the excuse of "it's aimed for kids!" When it turns out to be an awful movie. This movie did not do Minecraft as a whole any justice at all. There's so many things the writers could've done. For one an animated movie would've done so much better! And no this isn't a situation where it wouldn't work if it was animated, the Mario movie exists! The sonic movie was a live action because it made sense!!! If the writers can't make simple animated Minecraft story, what makes you think that they could make a live action work? The older people that criticize the movie were part of that community before or still are. Yet they shut them out because they don't want actual criticism. "For the fans" and "aimed for kids" in the same sentence, how dense can you be?
