Melancholy Tale About Identity Confusion
15 November 2014 | by l_rawjalaurenceSee all my reviews

Dean (Anthony Welsh) leads an apparently happy life in North London with adoptive parents Nigel (Anthony Flanagan) and Julie (Helen Baxendale). Unfortunately his life is thrown into turmoil by the unexpected reappearance of his sister Cassie (Paige Meade), claiming to be coming from a hostel after their parents had died in a car accident. Nigel and Julie are unsure about Cassie's presence in the household, but allow her to stay. As the drama unfolds, however, so we discover that Cassie has not been entirely honest about herself and her immediate past, forcing Nigel to reconsider his entire relationship both to his sister and his adoptive family.

Filmed on a succession of gray and dank days, Dominic Savage's production is as doleful as the weather; despite being loved by Julie, it's clear that the family's natural son Alex (Charlie Rowe) views Dean's presence with suspicion. There are also slight racist overtones; Dean and Cassie come from a mixed-race marriage, which Julie inevitably thinks is a recipe for disaster, especially as Dean's natural father sports dreadlocks. It is these hitherto unspoken prejudices that force Dean into rethinking what his future should be; is he doing the right thing by staying with his adoptive family, or should he be considering other alternatives? As Dean and Cassie, Welsh and Meade offer a poignant portrayal of long-lost sibling unity. Despite not having seen one another for so long, it's clear they have a spiritual as well as a filial bond that can withstand any possible attempts to destroy it.

The third in a series of well-written playlets, "THE SECRETS" has a strong sense of place as well as a taut script by Ben Ockrent.
