Emmy Season Faces #MeToo for the First Time

Just two and a half weeks after the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards came to a close, the New York Times published its bombshell, Pulitzer Prize-winning expose on movie mogul Harvey Weinstein’s history of sexual harassment and assault. The episode and its fallout launched the #MeToo movement, emboldening survivors to step forward with their own stories, which have brought down other high-profile names along the way.

That makes this Emmy season, and the forthcoming 70th annual ceremony on Sept. 17, the first to wrangle with the new reality of how such misdeeds are addressed in Hollywood. Already, that reality is shaping the race somewhat.

Seth Rogen on James Franco After Misconduct Accusations: ‘Yes’ I’ll Still Work With Him

Seth Rogen on James Franco After Misconduct Accusations: ‘Yes’ I’ll Still Work With Him
After several months, Seth Rogen has finally weighed in on the sexual misconduct accusations waged against his friend and longtime comedic collaborator James Franco, saying he’ll continue to work with Franco on future projects.

In an interview with Vulture, Franco was asked about his thoughts on the #MeToo movement, and he said that he had remained silent for so long because he didn’t feel his perspective was important to the cause.

“I’m friends with these people and I’m a dude. All that combined makes me the last person who should be talking about this,” he said. “There are so many people with real things to contribute to the #MeToo discussion that anything I say is not going to add anything useful,” he added.

Franco and Rogen have worked on several films together, including “Pineapple Express,” “This Is The End,” and most recently, the animated comedy “Sausage Party.” But when asked if he would make another film with Franco, Rogen replied: “Yes.”

Franco was accused of sexual misconduct by five women in January, just days after winning a Golden Globe for his performance in “The Disaster Artist.” Four accusers were Franco’s students at his acting school, and another said the actor was her mentor. They said he behaved in inappropriate or sexually exploitative ways. “I feel there was an abuse of power, and there was a culture of exploiting non-celebrity women, and a culture of women being replaceable,” one accuser, Sarah Tither-Kaplan, told the Los Angeles Times in January.

Immediately following the accusations, a “Disaster Artist” Q&A featuring Franco was cancelled by The New York Times, and the actor was digitally removed from the cover of Vanity Fair’s Hollywood issue.

However, Megan Abbott, a writer for the HBO series “The Deuce,” said in February that Franco would return for the show’s second season. Franco plays a lead role in the series, and is also an executive producer and directed two of the show’s episodes.

After the accusations were made, Franco discussed them in an appearance on “Late Night With Seth Meyers.”

“There are people that need to be heard,” Franco said. “I have my own side of this story, but I believe in these people that have been underrepresented getting their stories out enough that I will hold back things that I could say, just because I believe in it that much,” he said. “So if I have to take a knock because I’m not going to try and actively refute things, then I will, because I believe in it that much.”

A24 Plants Oscar Season Seeds for Toni Collette in Horrifying ‘Hereditary’ (Exclusive)

A24 Plants Oscar Season Seeds for Toni Collette in Horrifying ‘Hereditary’ (Exclusive)
Indie distributor A24 rarely leads a marketing push with awards at the fore. After all, movies like Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller “Ex Machina,” Lenny Abrahamson’s unsettling adaptation “Room” and Barry Jenkins’ micro-budgeted intersectionality drama “Moonlight” don’t exactly scream “Oscar!” from the outset. But the New York-based company nevertheless found an awards-season stride with those films and more.

The plan with “Hereditary,” Ari Aster’s terrifying Sundance entry that has been hailed as a new generation’s “Exorcist,” is to launch the film on June 7 as a summer horror movie, seek out its audience, and if all the pieces fall into place, establish the foundation for a campaign in the fall. With a stack of glowing critical notices already fanning the flames, and on the heels of a year that saw genre embraced by the Motion Picture Academy in interesting ways — from best picture victor “The Shape of Water

James Franco has stepped back from the spotlight lately, but has seen been spending time with his 25-year-old girlfriend Isabel Pakzad.

The Disaster Artist star, 40, stepped out with the grad student in New York City on Wednesday, where they were seen sipping matching green juices and smiling together.

Franco wore a tan, fleece-lined jacket with dark jeans, sunglasses and a basketball cap, while Pakzad wore distressed jeans and a graphic t-shirt under a navy blazer. The duo were also seen taking a stroll in the city last Friday, where the held hands and laughed as they walked.

James Franco turns 40 today, after what’s been a tumultuous year for the actor.

The actor began the year on a high note, earning critical praise for his performance as Tommy Wiseau in The Disaster Artist, a film he also directed. As award season approached, Franco was thought to be a frontrunner for a best actor Oscar nomination.

‘The Disaster Artist’ DVD Review

Stars: James Franco, Dave Franco, Seth Rogen, Alison Brie, Josh Hutcherson | Written by Scott Neustadter, Michael H. Weber | Directed by James Franco

It doesn’t get much more meta than a movie adaptation of a memoir about the making of a movie. And not just any movie, but supposedly the Worst Movie Ever Made. In The Room, Tommy Wiseau’s 2003 opus, every line of dialogue is a clunker; every character relationship is nonsensical; every plot point is ridiculous; every sex scene is laughable; and every actor is useless – not least its star and auteur, Wiseau himself.

The Disaster Artist was a 2013 memoir written by Greg Sestero and Tom Bissell, and this adaptation focuses on Greg and his strange friendship with Tommy. Wiseau is played with skill and sensitivity by James Franco (who also directs), while brother Dave plays the shyly ambitious Greg. It’s casting which reaps benefits, providing a

Beijing Festival Sends out Mixed Messages

Beijing Festival Sends out Mixed Messages
The eighth edition of the Beijing International Film Festival gets under way Sunday night. A spectacular ceremony, some 25 miles away from downtown Beijing will kick off a week of cinema-related celebrations that look little like any other major film festival.

That the opening ceremony is not followed by a film screening is one indicator. The deeply uneven film selection policy is another.

Baffling many in the industry, the festival lineup boasts both notable exclusions, and perplexing inclusions. A decision earlier this month to exclude the previously announced “Call Me By Your Name” was shock enough to produce a few ripples in the normally tightly-controlled Chinese Internet. And it further underlines the increasingly hard line being taken by Chinese regulators against Lgbt content.

James Franco's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Defaced with Obscene Graffiti

James Franco's Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame Defaced with Obscene Graffiti
James Franco’s star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame got an unwelcome amendment this week.

The actor’s placard, which he was honored with in 2013, was defaced with the word “douche” written in capital letters with a red marker. It’s unclear who graffitied the star.

The vandalism comes after Franco was accused of sexual misconduct by several woman. His name was first brought into the national discussion of sexual harassment in January after he wore a Time’s Up pin at the 2018 Golden Globe Awards, where he won a trophy for his role in The Disaster Artist.

Official New Trailer For James Franco and Milla Jovovich's Post-Apocalyptic Action Film Future World

Last week, a trailer was released for a new sci-fi western-style film produced by Lionsgate called Future World. That was not an official trailer and the studio asked us to take the post down until the official trailer was released. Well now the official trailer has been released and my opinion of it hasn't changed. It still looks awful. Below you will find my original post, along with a new synopsis and the official trailer.

Future World was co-directed by and stars James Franco. The story is set in a post-apocalyptic world exactly like Mad Max, and it looks like a pretty terrible film. I don't know how Franco went from directing a great film like The Disaster Artist, to this Future World movie, but he did, and I don't know what he was thinking! Maybe he thought it would be fun?

He even managed to bring a decent cast

'Future World' Trailer: James Franco Is a Warlord in a Post-Apocalyptic World

'Future World' Trailer: James Franco Is a Warlord in a Post-Apocalyptic World
The official trailer for James Franco's Future World has dropped. The film depicts a post-apocalyptic world where water and gasoline have long evaporated. Franco stars in and co-directed the sci-fi action movie, which marks his follow-up to The Disaster Artist.

The Mad Max-style trailer reveals the end of the world and commencement of a new dark age. Upon finding Ash, a cyborg assassin known as a “synthetic,” a warlord (Franco) whispers into her ear, “I’ve been looking for you for a long time.”

Meanwhile, a prince from one of the last known safe havens attempts to find medicine for the...

James Franco goes Mad Max in bonkers Future World trailer

Last year James Franco directed one of the best films of the year with The Disaster Artist, a sweet and hilarious tale about the making of the worst movie ever. Future World Trailer Throws James Franco Into an Apocalyptic Wasteland

Future World Trailer Throws James Franco Into an Apocalyptic Wasteland
Welcome to paradise. The new trailer for Future World, the latest James Franco movie, has arrived. And it takes the actor-director into an Apocalyptic Wasteland, surrounding him with quite the eclectic cast. This is Franco's directorial follow-up to The Disaster Artist, but don't look for the same type of critical praise. This is standard issue Drive-In movie fare with a twist.

You can watch the fight to save humanity in the new trailer for Future World, which was actually co-directed by James Franco and Bruce Thierry. Suki Waterhouse joins in on the fun. The two are joined by Jeffrey Wahlberg, Margarita Levieva, Snoop Dogg, Geirge Lewis Jr., and Cliff "Method Man" Smith. That's more than enough cast for any movie, to be sure. But both Lucy Liu and Milla Jovovich are also coming along for the ride.

This apocalyptic thriller follows Prince (Jeffrey Wahlberg) as he travels from a desert

‘Future World’ Trailer: James Franco Rips Off ‘Mad Max,’ But Milla Jovovich and Lucy Liu Could Save the Day

‘Future World’ Trailer: James Franco Rips Off ‘Mad Max,’ But Milla Jovovich and Lucy Liu Could Save the Day
Following the success of “The Disaster Artist,” James Franco will star in the sci-fi thriller “Future World,” which he co-directed. Using a color palette and costume design that bears an uncanny resemblance to both the original “Mad Max” as well as 2016’s “Mad Max: Fury Road,” “Future World” features car chases, cyborgs, and at least one reference to “the perfect woman.” Commence eye roll.

The movie stars Suki Waterhouse as a cyborg assassin known as a “synthetic,” who is coveted by the likes of Franco, Milla Jovovich, and Snoop Dogg for her powers. Though it’s unclear exactly what’s going on, she begins to malfunction and goes renegade in an effort to save a potential love interest. The film also stars Lucy Liu as a character known only as “The Queen.

Future World” is co-directed by Bruce Thierry Cheung, the cinematographer who lensed Franco’s previous directorial efforts, “In Dubious Battle,

After Oscar Winners ‘Get Out’ and ‘The Shape of Water,’ Could ‘A Quiet Place’ Tickle the Academy’s Genre Fancy?

After Oscar Winners ‘Get Out’ and ‘The Shape of Water,’ Could ‘A Quiet Place’ Tickle the Academy’s Genre Fancy?
With a monster (no pun intended) opening weekend box office haul and one of the most impressive critical approval ratings of the year so far, John Krasinski’s hushed thriller “A Quiet Place” is stirring its share of awards talk. We’re certainly in a new Oscar era, but can the buzz hold?

Just over a month ago, Guillermo del Toro’s “The Shape of Water” won the best picture Oscar, just the second victory for a fantasy film in the motion picture Academy’s 90-year history. Jordan Peele’s horror satire “Get Out,” meanwhile, claimed the original screenplay prize. Genre filmmaking had quite a moment in general, with other movies like “Blade Runner 2049” and “Logan” picking up major awards attention throughout the season.

The Academy’s ongoing diversification and internationalization initiative, adding waves of newer, often younger members over the last two years, has yielded plenty of discussion

‘The Disaster Artist’ Blu-Ray Review: Dramedy About Man Behind ‘The Room’ Quickly Becomes Frustrating

In case you’ve never heard of The Room, here’s what you essentially need to know: it’s a film that some people would argue can barely be considered a real movie.
