When the Star leads him to the observatory and lets him peer into the telescope, he sees something that only he can prevent...
- Night. The body of a 9-year old boy is lying on the ground. He fell and isnt breathing. Then.. Slam! The doors of a living room are being slammed open. A mother, Sara and the little, imaginative boy called Steven enter whilst shooting their unloaded toy cap guns. Theyre playing different roles, cowboy and indian, soldier, astronaut. Steven changes roles pretty quickly, whereas Sara just enjoys his vivid imagination and plays along. When theyre wearing a space helmet and holding wooden rocking horses theyre father, Leo enters. He clearly had a bad day and seems not to jump in.. Leo and Sara go into the other room and start fighting verbally, leaving Steven alone.
Later at night in his room, Steven wants to break up the fights between his parents, but doesnt dare to do it. He walks up the balcony to remove himself from the sounds of terror. On his balcony he sees a shooting star. He believes he could catch one as well, grabs a jar and holds it up to the sky. A second shooting star flies through the sky. Steven caught a Star.
He keeps the star in a jar for himself. The next day at breakfast, his mother shows him a picture of a cake. Steven loves it! But his birthday is just a couple of nights away and he gets ready for school.
In the bus, Steven draws ufos and monstrous earthworms. When he looks outside he sees these illustrations come to life. Ufos are flying around and when a gigantic earthworm comes out of the ground, they start shooting. Steven smiles.
At school, Simone, Stevens classmate reads a homework assignment. Her story is pretty boring, but luckily after her its Stevens turn. Vividly he starts reading aloud about the ufos and earthworms, mesmerising the teacher Ms. Carina, and flabbergasting his classmates. At the end of class, Steven stays behind, asking the teacher about stars. Ms. Carina tells him a little bit about them, however Steven isnt satified. He wonders where the stars come from that can fit in a jar. Ms. Carina motivates Steven by saying that it might be his destiny to find out where theyre from and hands him a miniature solar system. On the bottom is an address of an observatorium.
With this new adventure in mind leaves Steven school and heads back home. Sara asks if he already thought of his present he wants for his birthday. Steven retorts by saying its ages away. Obviously, he has something else to think about.
Steven is fascinated by the star in a jar but is being interrupted for diner. At diner Steven plays with his food. Leo gets agitated so Sara breaks the silence by asking about school. Steven had different courses, and he was interested in stars. Leo is puzzled by the fact hes having Astronomy at this age already. Steven feels cornered, but his father wants to hear an explanation. Steven tells him he caught a star. Leo is angry and they get into a fight. Steven closes down and enters a sort of bubble. Leo leaves the table angry.
At night, when Steven is asleep, he is being visited by an enormous star. It scares Steven at first, but then the talking star tells him that hes searching for his daughter. Saying that she went out of course because of a collision. Steven denies that hes seen her and the elder star tells him that for whoever finds his daughter, he will grant one wish. And with that, the elder star leaves.
Steven finds out that the star he caught is actually a girl and visualises how she looks. Theres a young blonde girl under his bed, where he hid the star. The day after Steven sees his mother crying and believes something has to be done. With the Star, now materialised as the little girl, he sets out to the observatory. There he reads about stars and planets until its dark. At night he looks into the telescope. In the telescope he sees a nebula that resembles a young boy accompanied with two adults. When he takes a closer look he sees that the nebulae are moving and that the adults start to disappear, leaving a young boy all alone in space. Steven is baffled and believes he peeked in his future there. He knows now what to do.
As he returns back home, the star is back in the jar, and his parents are fighting again. Its clear that they both have different views on raising Steven and that Leo doesnt seem to accept the creative direction Steven that is going. He just wanted to have his child to take over the family business. The fight climaxes when Steven shouts that they should knock it off! A literal cry for help from Steven, and Sara leaves the room. Leo tries to bond with his son by showing him some kind of device the family company makes. He thinks that Steven might want to play with it. Steven is disappointed in his father and cant believe his remark. Steven leaves the room, leaving his dad all alone in the living room.
In his room he takes out the star in a jar and believe she didnt fall out of course because of a collision. She ran away from home. Steven then realises that the girl in the jar is suffocating and runs off to his balcony to let her go.
On the balcony his mom enters his room right behind him, so Steven hides the jar. Sara tells Steven that his parents arent in love anymore, and Steven believes this is his fault, because of his daydreams and fantasies. Sara reassures Steven that its not his fault, and that not all hope is lost. Theyll search for help. She tells Steven that its his birthday tomorrow and that they have a present. She leaves, just to start crying in the hallway.
Steven apologises to the Star and sets her free. When he goes back inside, the Elder Star arrives from the sky and grants Steven his one wish. Obviously he wishes his parents to be together, and so it will be done. The Elder Star promises and asks if Steven wants to come on a trip with them into space. Stevens imagination runs overtime and puts on his trashcan lid. He climbs the balcony and the last thing seen are Stevens feet being lifted off the ground.
