Trivia

The movie addresses one of the main criticisms of the first movie, i.e. the fact that even though Wyldstyle (AKA Lucy) was the tougher and smarter character and did most of the work, Emmet, the "hapless male" was regarded as the hero. See more »

Sweet Mayhem: Bring me your fiercest leader.
Wyldstyle: [referring to Emmet] This guy is special.
Sweet Mayhem: This guy was a fierce warrior?
Wyldstyle: Okay, well, technically, *I* did the warrior stuff, but...
Sweet Mayhem: So you fought, and master built, and kicked butt, and then the hapless male was the leader.
Wyldstyle: He, uh... Well...

Incredibly meta, entertaining sequel.
13 February 2019 | by CriticalOfEverythingSee all my reviews

I adored the first Lego Movie and the Lego Batman Movie, they're both very clever, funny, beautifully animated and just straight up fun to watch. So I knew that a sequel to the first would probably never reach the heights of the first, which it very clearly doesn't. But that's not to downplay the movie or anything because it's an incredibly fun time, it's very clever with it's humor and approach to it's story, the characters are still great and entertaining, the animation is still absolutely wonderful to look at and all of the songs in this film are great. They have like 4 different songs in the Systar System to emphasize how ridiculously "girly" it is and they're all very funny and surprisingly fun to listen to. My gripes with the movie, however, are as follows: Sometimes it's so meta that it sort of comes off as pretentious, not to say the meta jokes weren't funny because I couldn't stop laughing at most of them, but it's sort of the same issue I had with Deadpool 2 where sometimes there aren't enough original jokes so they just cram in a bunch of references that people will get. Also, the animation seems to have had a bit of a downgrade which is fine for the most part as it makes the movie easier to look at, but it came off as jarring after rewatching the first in preparation. Also, there's just the fact that the message isn't as strong as the first. Even though the key message seems to be about being OK to be a kind and gentle person, even if you're a male, as well as growing up, it just isn't as strong as the first and there weren't as many heartwarming moments. But those issues aside, this is still an incredibly entertaining film that I would gladly watch multiple times. Also, just to get this out of the way, that part in the trailers that seemed like feminism is immediately shot down as soon as it comes up and it's never discussed again, so don't worry about any feminist propaganda.
