Alia Shawkat Says Jeffrey Tambor Accusers Deserve to Be Heard

As part of the ensemble casts of both Transparent and Arrested Development, Alia Shawkat says the sexual misconduct accusations against her co-star Jeffrey Tambor have been following her around. When premiering her film Duck Butter at the Tribeca Film Festival, the actress became the first from the Arrested Development cast to come out in support of Tambor's accusers.

“I was surprised, obviously. I’ve known him since I was very young,” Shawkat told IndieWire on Monday. “I support the voices of the victims, though, whatever they said.”

After sexual harassment claims were lodged by two of Tambor's colleagues in...

Alia Shawkat Supports Jeffrey Tambor’s Alleged Victims: ‘What They Said Needs to Be Heard’ — Exclusive
Alia Shawkat supports the women who say Jeffrey Tambor sexually harassed them on the set of “Transparent.” “I was surprised, obviously. I’ve known him since I was very young,” Shawkat told IndieWire in New York on April 23 while promoting her new movie, “Duck Butter.” “I support the voices of the victims though, whatever they said.”

Shawkat has known Tambor since she was 14 years old, when she played Maeby Fünke on “Arrested Development” opposite Tambor’s George Bluth Sr. Last year, she appeared on “Transparent” Season 4. Tambor has been accused of sexual harassment by two women, and was subsequently fired from “Transparent” Season 5 by Amazon.

On November 8, Deadline reported that Amazon was conducting an investigation into sexual harassment allegations against Tambor by his former assistant, Van Barnes. One week later, “Transparent” actress Trace Lysette wrote on Twitter that Tambor had cornered her up against a wall on set and thrust his pelvis against her.

‘A Kid Like Jake’ Trailer: Claire Danes and Octavia Spencer Lead Drama About a Gender Variant Kid
If “Transparent” introduced transgender adults to a wider audience, then “A Kid Like Jake” will highlight the ways children explore gender and how their identity is shaped by the views of the adults around them.

Starring Claire Danes and Jim Parsons as well-meaning parents, the New York-set “A Kid Like Jake” promises a nuanced portrait of contemporary parenthood, as told through the lens of a little boy who likes to wear skirts. The first trailer shows moments glorious and discomforting, as well as a few tears of joy. With an all-star cast and an authentic take on a topical issue, “A Kid Like Jake” is a huge step forward for trans cinema.

The story follows Alex and Greg Wheeler (Danes and Parsons), parents to Jake (newcomer Leo James Davis), as they navigate New York’s competitive elementary school application process. When the school counselor, Judy (Octavia Spencer), suggests they play

Read the Entire Screenplay for Jay Duplass and Lynn Shelton’s New Film ‘Outside In’ — Exclusive
Seattle-based filmmaker Lynn Shelton is best known as a comedic director for her 2009 Sundance hit “Humpday,” but her movies have always had a sensitive side, going back to her 2006 debut “We Go Way Back.” It was only a matter of time before she directed a drama, and with “Outside In,” she has found a key collaborator. Shelton co-wrote the project with Jay Duplass, who stars as a recently incarcerated man enmeshed in a clandestine affair with his old high school teacher (Edie Falco). IndieWire has the exclusive look at the screenplay, which you can read in its entirety below.

‘Fabled’ Trailer: Zosia Mamet and Gugu Mbatha-Raw Lead a Feminist Retelling of Classic Fairy Tales

‘Fabled’ Trailer: Zosia Mamet and Gugu Mbatha-Raw Lead a Feminist Retelling of Classic Fairy Tales
Following in the footsteps of her Pulitzer Prize-winning father, Zosia Mamet has penned a new television series for Refinery29. Co-created with husband Evan Jonigkeit (Joe Swanberg’s “Easy”), “Fabled” is an anthology series that upends classic fairy tales by giving them a feminist bent. The first episode of the series, titled “Anodyne,” sees Alice from “Alice in Wonderland” crossing paths with Dorothy from “The Wizard of Oz,” and will premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival later this month. In a newly released first trailer, the women appear to be at some kind of 30-day rehab program, perhaps for mental illness.

In addition to Mamet and Jonigkeit, “Fabled” stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw (“The Cloverfield Paradox”), Trace Lysette (“Transparent”), and Broadway headliner Norbert Leo Butz. Butz plays a therapist at the palatial looking facility. “We don’t want you to feel like a prisoner here, we want you to feel better,” he says.

Emmys 2018: Is this the year for Anthony Anderson (‘Black-ish’)? One of our top users thinks so
Anthony Anderson (“Black-ish”) has been Emmy nominated for Best Comedy Actor for the last three years in a row, but in 2015 and 2016 the prize went to Jeffrey Tambor (“Transparent”), and in 2017 the TV academy went with Donald Glover (“Atlanta“). Meryl Streep in ‘Big Little Lies’: First look at her in character as Nicole Kidman’s mother-in-law from hell

Meryl Streep in ‘Big Little Lies’: First look at her in character as Nicole Kidman’s mother-in-law from hell
Meryl Streep may look like a kindly grandmother in this first photo from the second season of “Big Little Lies.” But looks can be deceiving. She plays Mary Louise Wright who has come to town to get answers from her daughter-in-law Celeste (Nicole Kidman) about the death of her son Perry (Alexander Skarsgard). Expect plenty of fireworks as these two women face off.

For the first time on-screen, Streep is playing a character with her real first name. Likewise, she is acting opposite Kidman for the first time. While they both appeared in “The Hours” back in 2002, they didn’t share the screen. Kidman won the Oscar for her portrayal of Virginia Woolf while Streep was snubbed by the academy. We might also see Streep working with another Oscar winner, Reese Witherspoon, who both stars and produces in this Emmy-winning HBO series.

Since her breakthrough role in the 1978 miniseries “Holocaust,

2018 Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy Predictions

Frankly, we think Kate McKinnon is going to go three-for-three, but who else makes the field is quite intriguing. Alex Borstein seems like a lock and former winners Laurie Metcalf and Megan Mullaly seem likely as well. The big question is will the controversy over Jeffrey Tambor and “Transparent” affect Judith Light’s chances at a third straight nomination? Ponder.

‘Ready Player One’: T.J. Miller Is Still in Steven Spielberg’s Blockbuster, And Technology May Be to Blame

‘Ready Player One’: T.J. Miller Is Still in Steven Spielberg’s Blockbuster, And Technology May Be to Blame
Last December, when former “Silicon Valley” star T.J. Miller was accused of sexual assault by an anonymous woman and transphobic behavior by a film critic in the space of just two days, the actor and comedian was swiftly snipped from two big projects. First, Miller’s Comedy Central series “The Gorburger Show” was cancelled, then the mucus medication Mucinex dropped the comedian as its animated spokesperson. (He had previously left “Silicon Valley” in its fourth season, and the actor made it clear that he didn’t have any interest in returning to the HBO comedy; the newest season of the show has already nodded at killing his character off-screen.)

But one huge project didn’t abandon Miller: Steven Spielberg’s splashy new blockbuster, “Ready Player One,” which cast Miller as a bad guy in June of 2016, just one month before production was slated to begin on a production that Spielberg

Watch out, Rachel Brosnahan! One of our Emmy Experts says Tracee Ellis Ross will nab Best Comedy Actress

Watch out, Rachel Brosnahan! One of our Emmy Experts says Tracee Ellis Ross will nab Best Comedy Actress
Normally around this time of year we’d already be preparing for another Emmy win for Julia Louis-Dreyfus, who has won Best Comedy Actress for a record six years in a row for “Veep,” and who won Best Comedy Series for the last three years in a row as a producer of the series. But production of “Veep” was delayed because of Louis-Dreyfus’s treatment for breast cancer, so it won’t be back in time for this year’s awards. That means we’re guaranteed to have a new winner for Best Comedy Actress, but who will it be? Most of our Experts say it will be 2018 Golden Globe champ Rachel Brosnahan (“The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel“), but one Expert thinks it’ll be the 2017 Globe champ, Tracee Ellis Ross (“Black-ish“).

As of this writing we’ve polled nine Expert journalists for their early Emmy picks, and eight of them

‘Outside In’: Television Made Director Lynn Shelton a Better Filmmaker

‘Outside In’: Television Made Director Lynn Shelton a Better Filmmaker
Lynn Shelton has made six scruffy relationship dramedies, all set in her hometown of Seattle. When she picked up an agent after “Humpday” premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009, she figured she’d pay the bills with the occasional TV episode and continue shooting local movies. That’s not the way it turned out.

Over the last eight years, what began as a season-4 episode of “Mad Men” is now an in-demand career as a television comedy director, from Hulu’s “The Mindy Project” and “Casual” to IFC’s “Maron” and nine episodes of ABC’s “Fresh Off the Boat.”

So when Shelton finally reassembled her Seattle film crew to shoot her seventh movie, “Outside In” — produced, co-written and starring Jay Duplass opposite Edie Falco and Kaitlyn Dever — everything was different. First, the movie is Shelton’s first drama. And second, she found herself more prepared than she had ever been.
