Storyline

Mort has a secret that he really wants to tell his three adult children, who are so self-absorbed they don't see that something has changed for divorced, girlfriendless dad. Even when he invites them to dinner en masse to share his news, somehow, the conversation becomes about them. The secret unfolds, though, when he comes home and sees his married daughter getting intimate with her ex. Now, he knows her secret; she learns his; and the dysfunctional family finds one secret after another being exposed. Written by Jwelch5742

Even more cringe worthy than funny
15 January 2016 | by anderslinkSee all my reviews

I like awkward scenarios and imperfect people. I don't need a savior/hero character to keep me interested in a drama. It's ironic that people think this show is so typical and yet they admit how cringe worthy it is. It isn't reinventing the wheel... it certainly is not anything new for TV as a medium... but it is one of the better TV satires I have seen recently (It definitely beats Orange Is the New Black in terms of realism). One reviewer talked about wanting the entire state of California to fall in to the ocean after watching Transparent. Man, some people take television so literally. I'm not sure if people are genuinely closed- minded or they just really didn't care for the characters. Finding them disgusting is pretty much the point though. I was surprised the show dealt with a fair amount of feminist and political issues but that is because my expectations were very low. In the end I was expecting a decent satire with a balance of 95% entertainment and 5% political discourse and I would say I was surprised by a 90% entertainment value with 10% political discourse. It's not an intellectual show by any means, though.
