It's a shame that ESO's poor launch has left such an unalterably poor impression on people.
EuanB2129 February 2016
There's no denying that ESO's launch was rocky at best, but the game developers put a lot of effort into listening to what the players wanted and making the changes and improvements that were necessary, resulting in a great MMO that is sadly shunned by many who can't get over their initial at-launch disappointment.

Make no mistake, this isn't skyrim/ oblivion/morrowind multiplayer as many hoped for, but a fresh feeling game that incorporated the rich and beautiful lore and setting of the elder scrolls series into a highly enjoyable mmo experience.

The real beauty of ESO is its simplicity. From the combat system to the crafting system, the game is easy to pick up, but still manages to remain challenging and properly reward veteran players who have put many hours into perfecting their characters. Unlike many mmos, there is next to no learning curve, the gameplay feels exceptionally fluid and intuitive, allowing you to jump right into the adventure.

Another great feature, that we've come to expect in elder scrolls games, is the immersion. Every line of quest and radiant dialogue is fully voice acted. There are thousands of random books, scrolls and notes to be read; hundreds of fully-voiced, random npcs to talk to; hundreds of easter eggs referencing our previous es experience and much more. You can get lost in it for hundreds of hours and only scratch the surface.

Another feature that must be mentioned is the pvp. It's huge! Hundreds of players in one instance, all fighting to control the most keeps, towns and other resources as possible; all the while watching their backs for any counter-attacks or surprise sieges. It's manic, exhilarating and truly captures the all-out-war feel perfectly.

Of course eso is not perfect, there are still some features that could be addressed or expectations that simply can't be met.

One of the big problems elder scrolls players have with eso is the linear adventure style. Each area has a certain level that you need to be at before you can survive exploring it- it's not a sandbox as many hoped. This counters the "go in any direction and just explore" feel that many wanted, but keep one thing in mind: the areas are huge in and of themselves. The main alliance story follows a path through these areas, but there are many, many more quests to be found off the beaten track, and dungeons to happen across while adventuring.

Another big complaint is the initial cost. It's buy to play, so when you buy it, you can play all non-DLC content as much as you want and for as long as you want. For ~ £50 / $80 you can have endless hours of entertainment (for the price of about 15 hours' worth of films at the cinema, or 6 months' subscription for another mmo).

If you are a fan of the es series and want to continue exploring and enjoying Tamriel; or you're an mmo fan that wants something new and massively fun, the eso is well worth your time. And ignore those who played the beta and a week's worth at launch and now tell people how awful it still is, it's improved dramatically since then.

They got a lot right with this game
nikkiworrell12 January 2021
There are a lot of things they got right about this game. I'm an Elder Scrolls fan, not an MMO fan. I do recommend checking it out if you have a chance, but it's really just a placeholder until TES VI. Because it's an MMO, it's less enjoyable than it should be. The devs do a great job, but the people are generally awful and ruin the experience.

If you're primarily a PvE player, this is a 9/10. But...
Analog_Devotee3 August 2021
...if you enjoy PvP in open world Cyrodil, you're in for a lot of laggy times. It's such a shame, too, because Cyrodil is such a unique experience when it works correctly. But, hey, I still come back and play several times per week after all these years... so I can't knock it too much.

If the lag in Cyrodil was fixed, this would be a 10/10!

Brilliant game

Warning: Spoilers
The levelling has a good story with compelling quests. Once you hit level 10 you unlock dungeons and huge scale battles. The first dungeon I ever played was incredible and got me addicted I unlocked awesome armour and weapons. Also as it is buy to play it is not pay to win you do not have to buy a mount as you get one at level 10 I chose to buy 2 mounts but they were not expensive they were about £4.50 each compared to wow where mounts are £20. I would recommend this game.

Judged too soon
HDDeer14 June 2016
When it comes to mmo's there tends to be a lot of issues with the first phase of the game. When.this game was first launched there was issues with the levelling and made the game extremely repetitive. But after the first update, the game most certainly improved. I really wish those people who were disappointed at first would come back and play it. Also, i wasn't a big fan of Skyrim V which turned me off from the game initially, but these two games are completely different. So if you liked skyrim, you may or may not like this, and if you didn't like skyrim, give it a chance. This is a really good game. Unlike destiny this sticks to the true roots of a mmo.

Don't be fooled by ESO being an MMORPG, it's mostly a single player game
drogon00121 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a big fan of Skyrim but I'm also a strict single player-only gamer.

I don't care about group activities, ingame chat (seriously, if you're into chatting, why are you spending time with a game), player guilds and what have you. That's why I was skeptical about ESO being a MMORPG. Two years ago, however, I finally caved after watching some youtube vids and I bought the game.

Since then, I've played more than 1000 hours and own every story-DLC. The storytelling is entertaining and I really love the fact that I can play about 90 - 95 % of the game as a single player. And even if I'm forced to team up with others for the boss fights, they're so much fun. Because one's not forced to invite others and trot after them until everything's done and over. The boss "arena's" are marked with a skull + crossed bones on the maps. And I never have to wait long for other players to appear from all directions, running towards the place where the fight is about to happen. And then we wait until the boss re-spawns and then, sheer hells breaks loose, lol. Everyone's fighting and running around and I'm really surprised how much fun it is to take down a massive enemy together, while still being able to play on my own.

Someone's who's playing with a friend or a group of friends might have even more fun than I. ^^

I started a new game, about 200 or so hours ago. I'm lvl 48 right now and am not only able to solo a Dolmen - but also able to succeed doing so. The main story for the Dominion-"origin" is almost at it's end, but there's also the other two pacts to play through. I haven't even started the mages guild in earnest, or the Psijjic questline. I still have the Thieves Guild and the Dark Brotherhood to join and I haven't touched a single side mission that wasn't part of the main storyline so far. I'll do them when I'm done with the silver and gold playthroughs.

The whole game, including Morrowind, Elsweyr, Black March, High Rock, Skyrim, Summerset and all the other provinces has to be about 600 hours of story content alone. That's A LOT of content for a game with just a handful of DLCs and two extensions so far. Ingame companions will be coming next and I really can't wait until that content goes live.

Don't be fooled by ppl complaining about the chat or the forum. Just get your priorities straight. Do you want to play, or do you want to hang out in a forum/chat all day long? ESO really isn't the place for that. It's a GAME, not a social platform for forumites. ;)

ESO: An Online Epic Fantasy
Jinxxa_Wolf24 April 2023
Firstly, ELDER SCROLLS ONLINE is a great game, so fun, so much to do, absolutely beautiful landscape and cities, great characters and backstories, excellent music, vast amounts of questing, so much lore and great storytelling. It's a Fantasy MMORPG game (but can definitely be played Solo). Aside from quests and main stories, there are dungeons galore, delves, events, world bosses, game achievements, DLC, etc. Tons of stuff to collect as well.

I've been playing Elder Scrolls Online for quite some time now and I must start out by saying it might be easy to pre-judge the game in the beginning, especially when you might feel initially compelled to compare it to ES V: Skrim. Being a fan of ES V: Skyrim (as well as ES Oblivion, Morrowind etc.) and solo gaming in general, I felt torn, reluctant to play this. I really didn't want to hate it but certainly wasn't expecting to love it...

For Skyrim fans out there, I'm know it's easy to want to compare the gameplay, graphics, design etc. I remember being very annoyed at the differences initially and hesitant to play on, but I got over myself and really ended up enjoying this game. It has sooooo much to offer. Quests, Adventure, Exploration. There's so much to do, so much going on. Also, if you want to play solo you absolutely can (that was one of the aspects which I misunderstood in the beginning). I hate online games that make it impossible to play solo, and force social interactions at every turn. While that can be fun in certain times, sometimes you want the freedom to play your game as you choose and not automatically pushed into teams, guilds, clans etc. Sometimes you just want to escape people and reality and the drama that comes with. Many of us introverts play games! I digress.

My only annoyance is all the in-game purchase options that seem to infect so many games these days. I wish there were better ways to earn more Crowns (game currency for bonus content). I feel like that tends to detract from a solid game and always tends to feel profiteering and greedy, but it's not overy forced down your throat here and you can certainly play without buying stuff. You will probably want the main DLC to unlock new countries and questlines, but the other stuff (skins, costumes, pets etc.) is not necessary, but secondary and not much of a complaint. You can still win items and things like costumes and pets by finishing quests and participating in events etc. Some are gifted on holiday seasons. That's been cool.

Overall, this turned out to be a really great game. Great mechanics, fun gameplay, beautiful world design. It really has a bit of everything for everyone. Hard to understand someone hating it, in my opinion. It's definitely one of the better Fantasy MMORPG's out there and a great solo Fantasy RPG as well.

STORY: 9/10 GAMEPLAY: 10/10 GRAPHICS: 10/10 ART DESIGN: 10/10 MUSIC: 10/10 OVERALL RATING: 10.

A mediocre/okay game but it's NOWHERE near being in the same league as WoW, SWTOR or GW2.
angiris17 April 2014
Warning: Spoilers
ESO's an "okay" game. It is evidently of higher visual quality than most other MMO's currently. Having said that visuals aren't everything. I'm having a very tough time playing this game, not due to its enormous size, but because you are literally 100 percent dependent on questing. Non-stop. I realize this game isn't Skyrim or Oblivion as the developers were so kind to point out as well but they claimed that it still was a TES game.

I've taken a serious look at this game and honestly that claim is a gross overstatement. TES games have always been about exploring. In this game there is literally no point in exploring. Wanna know why? Because you only explore to FIND MORE QUESTS! Not gear, not rare bosses, just more quests...all day long... doing the same thing non-stop. This game is to me a mindless, unrewarding hack and slash. That could be said for a lot of MMO's yes... but in other MMO's at least it pays off to actually complete certain quests or just go grinding.

About the grinding: Utterly pointless. No loot, no rewards.

Quest dependency corridor style = epic fail.

Also...this is an MMO. Most people playing this will be focusing on rewards and constant improvement. Here you have to do everything yourself. The quest reward system (when actually getting something) is a random loot. Nothing specific to your play style. You could be playing with sword and shield and get a staff as a reward. Thats not cool guys...thats just wasting time.

We need more specific rewards from our quests fitting our preferred playstyles and more of them. GOLD too!! GOD! Getting 1 gold from killing level 15 mobs in this game. SERIOUSLY!?

Also.. this game needs more tutorials! I got the feeling that I was completely on my own in this game. Some players like the hardcore (noone holding your hand through this) type of experience but I like to actually know what the hell I'm doing before being told I have to do everything myself due to the poor quest reward system. More information about professions, dungeons, and such. Hell. You queue for a world event BUT NOTHING POINTS YOU IN THE DIRECTION OF IT! WHY!? I was in a group with 4 people and NONE OF US!! knew where to go. We had to guess and that's not cool! A simple blinking marker on the map would be very much appreciated.

I invested 100$ into this game and I'm gonna get 'em back! I hoped that I could find my money's worth somehow but so far I literally have to FORCE myself to run to the next...damn...quest giver... No can do.

It's like MMO repetitive questing on STEROIDS! Once again.. QUEST DEPENDENCY IS NOT COOL! We need more rare bosses spread around the map... we need more LOOT!! WAY MORE LOOT from enemies we kill..not just ONE SINGLE GOLD COIN PER KILL!! It feels lazy and pointless to attack ANY MOB WHATSOEVER if it doesn't have a quest tied to it. No... IT IS pointless. This goes for dungeons too. Bosses = Crap/no loot

In SWTOR (Star wars: The Old Republic) we of course have the same MMO based quests, reward system and so on... BUT...the difference in SWTOR is that not only are the rewards you get of actual use to you... but you actually care about the NPC's who give them to you. You pay attention to the dialog (unless it's in a heroic..mostly) which brings me to the fact that the fully voiced feature in ESO is UTTERLY POINTLESS because i found myself and a TON of others just skipping the dialogs just to get to the QUEST or just to get the reward WHICH TYPICALLY SUCKS because its of no use to your character.

SWTOR has story, rewards and even though its clearly not as big as ESO, it feels more rewarding and fun to play because you never lose focus of your development. In ESO its just..quest after quest...hell..you even pick up more quests as you try to reach another quest. YOU'RE DROWNING IN QUESTS and its wearing me down badly. Less quests, more rewards, MORE ACTUAL EXPLORATION without it being quest related!

I rate this game a 5 based not on its performance or visuals. This 5 is based on the super lackluster, boring, pointless gameplay which is NOT up to todays MMO standards nor player expectations The game is extremely streamlined without any innovation in regard to character development.

If you're not rewarded for running dozens of miles in every direction for HOURS on end then what is the point of playing this game. Nice visuals? No thanks. This game is sooo boring! Clickfest FTW!

ESO game play feels like early World of Warcraft without the charm. It's rough around the edges and feels very spread. The overall agenda of which is clear in WoW or SWTOR (Fighting for the alliance or the Sith Empire) is very tough to detect here. Am I supposed to care for the factions I chose? I don't. I could't care less. GEAR!! WE NEED GEAR! and we want it without having to make it ourselves NON STOP.!

This game is simply NOT up to date. Graphics yes... gameplay no. Want fun GAMING...go play WoW or GW2 or SWTOR. Those games are preferable to this by a LONG SHOT. If ESO is to survive by TODAYS MMO STANDARDS we need ACTUAL exploration, more non quest related content, better rewards and easier access to gold.

PVE is bare bones!

To me it's plain as day that ZeniMax have no idea how to create a modern or any MMO.

And why are horse prices set at 40-50k. tell me Zinemax... Who at lvl 10 have 50k gold. No one!! You're just encouraging gold farmers and buyers. Epic Fail!

The game is ok, but I'm glad I bought it on sale.
profcamilotorres5 January 2022
I was expecting more, considering all the hype. For me it felt flat and lacking, because the races and classes are a little too cosmetic. They are so "open" to crossover, that it doesn't feel there is much difference in choosing one or the other. And then there are so many tweaks you can buy, that characters have no distinctive flair. Which also makes this game a great money pit for players into building mega-characters.

But the deal-breaker for me was that, something about the visuals caused me vertigo. No matter the adjustments I did. Tried switching perspective, reducing head-bob, and just about any other recommended tweak. I couldn't play for more than 45 minutes without getting nausea. The funny thing is that a friend also got vertigo from the game. I looked around and vertigo seems to be an issue for some people.

So, no, I wouldn't recommend this game.

Game's great,..the forums not so much
WhiskeyRiver-AZ20 June 2016
The community forums for ESO are horrible. They are tantamount to a Nazi Regime. And this is the truth. I have been playing ESO since the first betas, and been in the forums as long. Many people go there for information, and to connect with other players. However,Zenimax seems to have created a place where you cannot speak about many things,or you will be banned from the site. It is hard at times what to know you are allowed to speak about and what you had better not speak about. The lines have blurred and the moderators are now getting personal about who they allow to stay and who they get rid of. At the moment, the entire community is up in arms about the recent banning of players who downloaded a cheat program. They were permabanned, but now are allowed to return, which goes against the terms of service that Zenimax makes you agree to when you start playing. There were many threads opened in the forums, but were shut down by the moderators.Then,..they created one to allow people to talk about it,but in the first post told you that it was against forum rules to talk about the topic,or the actions taken for it. People were angry, and some of us posted reflecting our feelings.I was one of them.Suddenly,I was banned from the site, permanently, and many other members had their comments removed.. So,at this time there are rampant cheaters in the PvP area of the game, and Zenimax has allowed this. In the end,if you want to join their forum, you had better be very careful what you say and what you talk about,or who you talk about. **About the game itself.** I played in the first betas and continue to do,so even now. I read here that someone said that you can only explore to find other quests. That all you can do is quest or grind. This isn't true at all. Also it was said that ESO is too linear, that you are led through each quest. This also isn't true. There are zones you have to get through before you can get to others, sure, but they are factioned zones.Meaning that you start on one faction, and finish the main quest there, and then are send to a different faction to do the main quest there, until you have done all three factions.Once you have done all three factions you have full run of the entire map. **Very soon you will be able to have access to the whole map from the beginning. They are changing this and making it wide open to explore and quest. In ESO many creatures and monsters you kill drop very good gear,as well as low level plain things.Bosses always have something worth getting when you kill them. The people who gripe a lot about not getting stuff from bosses, etc, that ESO doesn't give you any good gear or anything are usually PvP players who constantly find fault with the game.Fair,.ESO wasn't built around PvP and they really don't have a lot to do,but they DO get the very best gear in the game.Thing is,I have never felt the need for that gear,as I can craft my own gear and improve it until it is Legendary. You can explore every facet of each zone as you please. There are some small problems with the game, there always with games this big. And personally,I think it is a finer game than the ones mentioned in the other reviews. WoW,and the rest.I have played World of Warcraft for a long time, but since playing ESO,it feels quite dated and clunky now. It really is an awesome game and the output of the funds to purchase the basic game is worth it.You then can either subscribe and have infinite slotted crafting bags, added XP,and 1500 crowns given you to use in the crown store for fun items like mounts, costumes, small upgrades, etc.Nothing that would make the game pay2win though. No weapons or gear. Also when yo usub you get every DLC for free. In ending,I still after two years subscribe, though you don't have to anymore, and will continue to do so for a long time to come. ESO is a great way to spend time.
