The new Millennium's SUPERFRIENDS.
xamtaro1 February 2014
JLA ADVENTURES: TRAPPED IN TIME, came out of nowhere. There was minimal publicity to accompany this limited release, and perhaps it was for the better. JLA Adventures can only be described as "Justice League lite", a step down from Warner's DC animated offerings from the last decade. For years, Warner has given us the likes of Justice League Unlimited, Young Justice and its critically acclaimed Direct to video Animated movies which all viewers agree is a huge step above Marvel's animation efforts. Those shows combined well developed characters with top notch realistic voice acting, complex plots, a darker tone and outstanding animation. Those were shows that could appeal to the more mature comic book fan and stand toe to toe with the tone of summer blockbusters.

This general feel goes out the window within moments when you hear Superman doing a "G.I Joe" style roll call of the characters and ending off with "Justice League! Into Action!". One silly cheesy line after another plagues this excuse for a movie. Comedy is fine, but not when the tone is as inconsistent as here. On one hand, you have lines that are right at home in comedic shows like Batman Brave and the Bold, while the plot and acting seems to take itself seriously.

In this story, villain Lex Luthor is freed from his frozen prison in the far future and enslaves another villain called Time Trapper to send him back to the past. His plan: to reform the legion of doom and prevent Superman from growing up into the superhero he is by stealing him away when he first crash lands in Kansas as a baby. Now those are high stakes! We are talking about the very existence of the Justice League here! Into this adventures comes Dawnstar and Karate Kid (LOL), two wannabe superheroes who followed Luthor from the future and come face to face with the legendary heroes that they practically worshipped back home.

Giving life to our heroes (and villains) is a fine bunch of voice actors. Sadly, it is the writing that neuters any memorable or complex characterisation. Even Teen Titans: trouble in Tokyo felt more mature than this movie. Hampered by an indecisive script, our characters sound like one dimensional caricatures of their comic book selves. There is hardly any development as the plot progresses. It's like the early episodes of Superfriends, except that it keeps trying to be like Justice League: Doom. You got some good looking action and a couple of epic fights. But you also got badly timed comic relief like this stupid sequence of the heroes and villains playing "catch the baby" like something out of a Bugs Bunny cartoon. Then again, at barely 52 minutes long, one could not expect much.

JLA Adventures plays more like a hastily produced TV series pilot than a standalone movie. It even looks hastily produced. Animation studio DR Movie turns in some disappointing work making JLA Adventures look no better than their previous work on Justice League Unlimited more than 10 years ago. Animation is as inconsistent as the tone, with a few good sequences and the rest merely mediocre. As for the artwork, you either love Superman looking like a caricature or you do not. Designs take some getting used to but having characters go off model once too often spoils the experience.

For an audience of under 12 years old, JLA Adventures is a sufficient kid pleaser, offering a straight up battle between good end evil, zero plot complexity, simple characters and child friendly action. It may appeal to grown up fans who yearn for the old days where comics were for kids; a more innocent alternative to DC's PG-13 animated offerings. But for the more discerning viewer, even if you have not been a follower of past DC animated productions, the sub par quality of the overall production compared to other recent cartoons is a definite turn- off.

Finally a Justice League movie I can watch with my kids.
rajaat9915 June 2014
Lately the animated movies coming out are not suitable for children, with all the blood and swearing. I'm glad DC finally put something out that I can watch with my younger children. There are plot holes, but no worse than a Michael Bay movie.

It's good, clean, fun.

I still wish it was more along the lines of the Justice League cartoon, which was entertaining for children and adults.

Note: I saw another review bad mouth the character of "Karate Kid." I'd just like to point out that DC Comics introduced Karate Kid in 1966, so I figure it's about time he showed up in an animated film.

watchable not as good as JLA WAR

Just plain awful

What in the world has happened to the DC quality ethic? This feature was so bad I wish there was a way to get my money back. I can't believe I paid for something this terrible. Flash is so slow that Grodd can catch him. Whoever did Batman's voice seems to have something inserted into an internal cavity, and what the heck is Robin doing with the JLA? The art was bad, the script was bad.(How is it Karate Kid can take on 3 super villains at once, see the fatal flaw in the Time Trapper and not be able to take down Robin in a fight?) Who wrote this and how did DC allow this fiasco to take place? There are thousands of fans who are much more qualified to write scripts than whatever third grader they chose. The dialog made me cringe the entire length of the feature. Heck, you could probably pick someone from random on the street and they could out write the clowns that committed this crime against comics fandom. I began to have high hopes with the Bruce Timm Justice League Unlimited series. The art was a bit sub-par, yes, but still effective, the writing, characterizations and acting by the voice talent really put that series above everything else that had ever been done. Then when Crisis on Two Earths was released, it looked like DC had reached its potential. But now this rubbish. I'm hoping the DC guys read these reviews and take action. This stuff has to go away. Here's hoping the upcoming Arkham Asylum piece vindicates DC. I'm beginning to lose patience.

Fun
Milk_Tray_Guy25 September 2021
Fun movie, with the Justice League, the Legion of Doom, the Legion of Super-Heroes, Time Trapper AND sky portals! Lots of time-travel/time paradox shenanigans, as Luthor tries the old 'erase the Justice League from having ever existed' ploy. With Diedrich Bader as Batman, Grey DeLisle as Wonder Woman, Peter Jessop as Superman, and Fred Tatasciore as Lex Luthor. Plus Robin, Flash, Aquaman, Cyborg, Dawnstar, Karate Kid, Bizarro, Toyman, Cheetah, Black Manta, Gorilla Grodd, and Solomon Grundy. It's lighter in tone than a lot of DC movies, but not too light; there's still a gripping story. Some really nice animation too, especially the around Time Trapper and his abilities. The ending sets up for a sequel. Shame we never got one. 7.5/10.

Entertaining despite the usual time travel plot holes
DarthBill26 March 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'm not entirely sure what the folks at DC & WB hoped to achieve with this "stealth release" other than proving they can churn out DVD animation faster than team Marvel/Disney can, but there is one possible explanation: as stated in another review this has the look and feel of a TV pilot for a more kid friendly New 52 Justice League series mashed up with Super-Friends that didn't get picked up for whatever reason, but by the time they heard the bulk of the project was already in the can, so it was turned into a DVD in an attempt to recoup some of the money, even though they didn't put a whole lot of money into marketing it.

Anyhow, the plot finds future Legion of Hero kids Karate Kid and Dawnstar getting mixed up in Back to the Future time travel shenanigans when they accidentally release a literally frozen in time Lex Luthor, who gets a hold of the Time Trapper and uses him in an attempt to make sure the Justice League never comes into existence... by getting rid of Superman! Chaos and Mayhem ensues.

I have no great love of Super-Friends, which this feels like a more modernized version of (it is reportedly based on an old episode of Super-Friends with the same basic premise), but I decided to give it a look to see how it compared with the oh so mature and action heavy "Justice League: War", which the powers that be bragged was a big epic "popcorn movie" and it turned out to be the worst kind (though not surprising given that its source material, the New 52 Justice League: Origin, was pretty bad and well below the abilities of the normally reliable Geoff Johns). To my surprise, this was actually pretty enjoyable, despite my usual anti-Super-Friends bias. While WAR dragged on and on forever with no end in sight for a rather trite and boring story and failed to improve upon the faulty source material (and for the most part was just annoying to sit through), "Trapped In Time" is surprisingly brisk and its characters for the most are not annoyingly over the top (though Karate Kid comes dangerously close to it at times - then again he probably gets more character growth in this than just about of the WAR characters), which was unfortunately the case with WAR, which tries to be mature but in all the wrong ways (substituting good, clever writing with crude in your face profanity and crassness).

The voice cast is a who's who of today's best voice actors, with Fred Tatasciore, better known as Marvel's go to guy for voicing the Incredible Hulk, stealing the feature with his powerful rendition of Lex Luthor. And he's not the only Marvel veteran here, as quite a few cast members have histories voicing Marvel heroes and villains.

At the end of the day this will probably appeal more to kids than older fans (unless they have soft spots for Super-Friends or just like mild camp) but it's a decent way to pass the time.

Waste of Time. Totally Crap!
public_eye1 June 2014
First of all I like good animation movies. And I have watched all of the Justice League animation movies as well as Marvels. Most of the time I enjoyed them. But this one was really a waste! This movie should have been named more like 'Justice League- adventures of wannabe kids'. I mean come on! Two stupid kids who clearly messed everything up, are jumping around through time loops? And the JL actually handed Time Trapper's Sandglass into the hands of that two kids who started all that chaos? Really???

I mean what the hell on earth was the script writer thinking. Story really sucked. and If you are not an average 12-13 years old, then you probably should skip this movie. Definitely not worth your money or Time. What a disappointment. I would give it 3 out of 10 maybe.

JLA: Trapped in Time offers enough for DC universe fans to make it a must-watch, but it falls short of their best work
kevin_robbins29 February 2024
I recently rewatched JLA: Trapped in Time (2014) on MAX. The storyline begins in the future, where Lex Luthor, frozen after a historical battle with the JLA, is accidentally revived. He sends the Legion of Doom back in time to prevent Superman from becoming the hero who can stop him. Two future heroes pursue them into the Time Machine to thwart their plans.

Directed by Giancarlo Volpe (director of 19 episodes from Avatar: The Last Airbender), the film features the voices of Diedrich Bader (Office Space), Laura Bailey (The Legend of Vox Machina), Grey Griffin (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen), and Fred Tatasciore (Team America: World Police).

There were aspects that I liked about this picture and some misses too. I didn't love the animation style or how Lex Luthor was depicted. The storyline and future super heroes were just okay. However, I did enjoy the array of heroes and villain, the delivery of their powers and the various battles were a lot of fun and worth a watch.

In conclusion, JLA: Trapped in Time offers enough for DC universe fans to make it a must-watch, but it falls short of their best work. I would give it a 5.5-6/10 but recommend seeing it once.

Not for ages above 12
josephkalaivanar8 April 2014
I'll keep it simple. It has a character called Karate Kid (!?) - yeah I'm not joking! The best scene features Bizarro and Solomon Grundy having a low IQ conversation. That's it. Bad beyond belief. Imagine the power of time travel preventing this flick from being made. That may be a better story.

As a side note, why are they making more and more preschool friendly animated movies? Marvel's Black Widow and Punisher movie was equally bad. The days of JL Unlimited storytelling seem to be over. :(

P.S. The guy who said that this is more watchable than JL: War clearly doesn't watch enough animated films.

Just plain Awful
pablouk-74-27836225 February 2014
I know you are expected to contribute with a huge review here but I just can't bring myself to write too much other than to say this has to be a sick and awful joke. WB cartoons I have found over the years are normally by far superior to Marvel cartoons, but in this case I would give this the same terrible mark as I would give Spiderman Unlimited, the latest Avengers Cartoon or Agents of SMASH, basically all the rubbish which Marvel has produced for the much younger (or is that stupid) viewer. I thought that JL war was a bad idea but this is just a new level of trash for the completely brain dead. I give this 1 star as this site hasn't got a minus star rating system. WB seriously need to look at what they are producing now compared to a few years ago. I suggest that they bring back Young justice for a year or so and then start again.

Karate Kid IS a DC character. A fun movie way underrated.
josemanuelbenetti3 April 2016
First of all: Karate Kid IS a DC character made on 1966, way before the unrelated movie. That movie had to borrow the name from DC so, please, inform yourself before judging. I've watched this movie last week and I loved it. I'm 33 years old and I usually like the more complex plot of more adult oriented stories but I dislike the concept of adult they have, including excesive gore and sexual situations. This one is a movie for all publics, fun, with a conflict based on sci fi, not so different of the plot of more "adult" dc movies. I think you may like a movie for different reasons, but on this case, those reasons are primary based on enjoyment, is fun, it creates a good tension to make you wonder what will happen, has funny lines, with a dissobedient Robín that defies Batman and a comical Bizarro that says the opposite he is doing every time. Just watch it.

You'll enjoy it.

lame beyond words, avoid this one.
danielcpryor21 February 2014
The above reviews are correct, this title is sub-par compared to the last decade of great animated movies DC has given us.

And now obviously there's to be a sequel.

Ugh! I should have known that any animated DC title without a PG-13 rating would be for 12 year old and I was right!

Avoid this thing like the plaque.

This thing is a MAJOR step back for DC animation.

What the hell is going on? Who are the people who conceive drivel like this? Who the blazes is in charge of quality control. Why does anyone whose name is credited with this animation still have a job? This is as bad as it gets folks. It's just plain awful to the point of stupid. I don't care what age you are, this is duff. Ignore JLA adventures in time, avoid it, burn it, bin it just DON'T WATCH IT. Anyone giving credence to this garbage by rating it anything higher than 3 should have their IMDb membership suspended immediately pending investigation. You have been warned. IMDb 10 line rule has compelled me to continue. So I'll number rate JLA A.I.T for the folks that don't like reading. Animation 1 Dialogue -11 Script 0 Plot -10 Costume 0

Was not that good
dtaylor68-8-54920322 May 2014
All I can say is...not much.

My kids enjoyed and was entertained by it so I guess that is the only thing that matters.

Both the animation and story was alright, but both could have been better. Like some of the other reviewers mentioned it did feel a bit like a 1 hour Super Friends television special with the all too familiar Legend of Dome headquarters and Hall Of Justice.

There was some heavy hitters in the voice acting department at least.

Didn't like the inconsistency of when Superman disappeared, so should have Bizarro since he was an imperfect clone of Superman. No Superman, No Clone!

Warning: Spoilers
This is not good. This is a one-off for the kiddies. Not worth the watch for most. This should be named Super Friends in time. The time travel portion is so paradoxical its like watching an Austin Powers movie.

The bad guy is a time genie that is locked away behind a glass box with no security system. How Utopian does your civilization have to become before you feel no need to secure a frickin time travel device under some hard security. An art museum would have better security.

Lex is frozen in a block of ice that isn't even being refrigerated. I guess it keeps itself perpetually cold. Or maybe it was a chamber cooled by futuristic unseen measures. But that means they plan on keeping on ice forever! You will know what I am talking about if you dare watch it.

Have you ever noticed that when someone goes back in time to take out the JLA, Earth never immediately falls to any of the countless galactic level villains that only superman can beat? If Lex beats Superman, Lex should return to an Earth ruled by Darksied. That would be a cool storyline. Lex Luthor: It's a Wonderful Life!

Awesome for little kids
vjaega14 May 2015
I've been trying to find something my preschooler and toddler could watch. They like superheroes but none of the cartoons which are available on disc these days are appropriate for them. This was in my opinion, an excellent, clean way to introduce them to the DC universe and have a basic idea of the Character's abilities. My 4 and 2 yr old boys watch it all the time. Im grateful that it doesn't have be-headings or sexually suggestive content, because honestly there is enough material out there for the more hardcore comic book fans this isn't for them. It's for kids. Let it go. When you become a parent, then you'll understand why JLA trapped in time is a great little movie for them.

Short, but good
skot777@msn.com26 September 2019
The art was interesting, and it didn't fit any of the previous JL movies we've seen. It looked more like Phantom 2040. The story was well written, and I like the unique look of the only 2 LoSH characters we see: Karate Kid and Dawnstar, although Karate Kid looked much more like a character from Avatar, The Last Airbender. Check-it out. I'm glad I own the DVD and enjoyed all 52 minutes of it.

On the level of a mediocre Saturday morning cartoon
KineticSeoul16 February 2015
This is a very childish superheroes movie for the kids. If your under 10 and is up for a Saturday morning cartoon movie, this might work for you. If not, this movie is silly, from the animation to the character directions. This is pretty much a very simple time travel movie. With the main DC superheroes not really leaving much of an impact when it comes to the story as a whole. There is one clever idea to defeat the villain in this story, but besides that it's on the lever of another regular Saturday morning cartoon and a mediocre one at that. Batman practically does almost absolutely nothing in this.

Usually DC/Warner make great animated videos. This is NOT one of them.
MinistryofDoom30 August 2020
Usually DC/Warner Bros make great animated videos. This is not one of them. The plot is convoluted, unsatisfying, and just...plain dumb. As a comic book geek, I enjoyed the appearance of many of the members of the Legion of Doom but I felt that the way that they were used was very underwhelming. Usually DC/Warner's animation is very good, but the animation and art style was just off for some reason. It felt like they couldn't decide if they wanted to go with the style of Superman/Batman: The Animated Series or whether to take a more comic-styled approach and so the end result is a weird combination of both. It doesn't look good. Take a look at some of the scenes with Superman; his expressions and animation looked strange. The other members of the Justice League were also hit or miss, but they also didn't really contribute alot to the story-line. Some of them were just there so that the title of the video could include "JLA". This is not a very good entry in this series of DC/Warner videos; not by a long shot. I would avoid this and go watch some of the better animated offerings instead.

Very little more than just pointless brawling...
paul_haakonsen22 June 2021
Yeah, I can't really claim to have been overly thrilled to sit down to watch the 2014 animated DC movie "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time" with my 12 year old son. Why? Well, first of all, I am not overly keen on the superhero genre at all, and secondly, the synopsis for this animated movie just seemed fairly out there.

But still, I sat down to watch "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time", as I hadn't already seen it before. And as it turned out, then "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time" wasn't exactly a grand moment in the history of DC animated superhero stories.

Sure, it was watchable, but it was essentially just pointless and mindless action, as the storyline was pretty spaced out, and hardly proved to have much of any appeal to me. I have to admit that with this particular storyline then I shrugged and I was already on to the next movie once it ended. There was nothing memorable about this particular animated movie.

Everything that transpired in the storyline was superficial and there wasn't given any time to let the viewers submerge themselves into anything here really.

The animation was adequate, and the art style was passable, but not great. And there weren't any character development of much of any real interaction between the characters, as they were mostly like brawling with one another.

And as for the voices they opted for in "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time", well that was something else in some aspects. I do like Diedrich Bader as a comedian, but as the voice of Batman/Bruce Wayne? No, not so much. His voice is just not deep and rough enough to pull that off in a very convincing manner.

All in all, then "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time" came and went without leaving a lasting impression on me. It was watchable, yes, but this was hardly a DC animated movie that warrants more than a single viewing.

My rating of "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time" lands on a less than mediocre four out of ten stars.

It's pronounced "chee", not "key"
rohitian17 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The voice actors were talented -- especially veterans like Dante Basco (Rufio/Zuko) and Diedrich Bader (Drew Carey Show). However, the animation was grainy and uneven. The direction was lazy here. The starkest example being the mispronunciation of the word, qi. Maybe don't direct others to pronounce a word, if you don't know what the word means. All you had to do was consult the writers (or a dictionary), before going into the sound studio. My one criticism of the writing might be that the script did not really commit to a tone. It was sarcastic with Robin, and childish with the future heroes, and dark with the Time Trapper. As a result, the dialogue often felt forced. Always fun to watch these characters, even in orchestrated productions -- it would have been nice if the makers knew their stuff better.

Do not believe the other reviews!
untouchable_33316 May 2014
What I see with the previous reviews, is jaded cynicism where probably grown folks have forgotten how to be children and have fun like children.

This movie is a huge nod to the Super Friends and it borrows the tone heavily, with painfully obvious, perhaps intentional, dramatic convenient situations that are to be expected, it shows intricate concepts like time traveling in a very simplistic manner, because it knows that even with a smooth talking convoluted explanation like most movies do in an attempt to gain a more serious tone these days, it's still a topic that for most of us is beyond our grasp and therefore it doesn't bother with it, since really, any explanation would do.

But it all works to show a side of the DC characters that we haven't seen in a LONG time, the silly and heart touching side, every character is eventually involved in a joke to the point of almost putting a Scooby-doo chase scene, and I don't mean that in a bad way, I couldn't help but to smile, giggle and laugh at the many absurd situations and lines that just work their way to your childhood, but there's more, it's not a comedy.

The action is by far the best I've seen in a long time, the unfortunate comparison is with SoB, which is rendered outdated by this movie, every move flows beautifully and I truly felt excited while watching the fight scenes that even show in detail that some characters are supposed to be expert martial artists... SoB did not succeed at all in this department.

The animation is leaps and bounds better than the previous Son of Batman, the drawings aren't on the cheap side like the mentioned movie, where they seem to be running out and save in graphite, the same goes for the voice acting, even if we don't hear any of the regular voices, the delivery is not overly dramatic and is natural instead, making every line and/or joke not seem forced, all the contrary.

Like I said, expect dramatic convenience that is borderline shameless, but that is what this movie is, shameless of itself, it just wants you to have fun and it delivers.

Bring out your inner child and have a good time with this movie.

Bad plot Warning: Spoilers
The time travel plot of this is pretty bad. Stopping Superman from being raised on Earth would not stop Bruce Wayne's parents from being killed and thus would not stop him from becoming Batman. It would not stop Wonder Wiman from leaving her island. It would not stop Barry Allen from getting struck by lightning and becoming The Flash. It MIGHT lead to events that would stop Cyborg from being created. It MIGHT lead to events that would either stop Arthur Curry from going to Atlantis or coming back to the surface once he got there. It also would not stop dozens of other superheroes from being born or created.

That being said, the animation and voice acting were very well done.

Good for a person who is getting into DC
WeAreLive12 November 2017
Warning: Spoilers
I will be honest I back when I saw this movie I wasn't very keen on mature DC back in 2015 but as time went on I got into them.

I will be honest this might not be the best DC movie I have seen but it is reasonable but I kinda wish that the movie was longer because it is not even 1 hour, in fact, it is the same amount of time as it takes for a CW series episode length.

I was actually even more happy that they got Diedrich Bader back as Batman and Kevin Michael Richardson as Black Manta. In fact, the whole cast was good.

In these, I am very surprised that not many people know who Karate Kid is. He is not from the movie Karate Kid he is from Legion Of Superheroes another DC TV show, in fact, there is an episode dedicated to him.

If you are a fan of DC golden age heroes, Superfriends and Batman the brave and the bold then you might love this movie.

Almost perfect in every way possible - Good clean fun
ersinkdotcom5 June 2014
Warning: Spoilers
I'm a huge fan of the DC Universe animated movies. There's always been one thing that bothered me about them, though. They were aimed at an older crowd and borderline inappropriate for anyone under the age of 13 for sure. I still don't understand why filmmakers can't cater to both younger and older audiences at the same time.

It's not like they're going to lose an older audience if they take away the sexual innuendos, bad language, and adult content. However, those elements will keep parents from letting younger children watch them. There's more to gain from removing the offending material than keeping it in there and alienating an entire group of potential viewers (and buyers). I wish there were more neutral DC Universe movies like "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time."

Lex Luthor captures an entity named the Time Trapper who controls the Sands of Time. Superman's arch nemesis and his Legion of Doom use the mysterious being's powers to travel back in time and wipe out the very existence of the Justice League of America. Can the super powers foil Luthor's evil plans before they're erased from history and mankind is left to fend for themselves?

"JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time" came out as an exclusive release a few months back through Target stores. It just recently was released to the mass market on DVD only. The movie is good clean fun for the whole family. Female fans will embrace Wonder Woman and identify with teen super hero Dawnstar. Boys will want to emulate Batman, Superman, the Flash, Cyborg, Aquaman, and teen marvel Karate Kid as they defend the world from the Legion of Doom and the Time Trapper.

Bonus material for "JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time" includes 2 bonus cartoons from the DC Comics Vault. They include "The Mysterious Time Creatures" from "The All-New Super Friends Hour" Season 2 and "Elevator to Nowhere" from "Super Friends" Season 5. It also contains trailers for "Teen Titans Go," "Beware the Batman," "The Lego Movie," "Tom and Jerry," and "Tom and Jerry's Giant Adventure."

"JLA Adventures: Trapped in Time" was almost perfect in every way possible. It was a clean movie which didn't lose its potency without any of the questionable material found in the other DC Universe animated films. The animation is vibrant and technically superb. It's only 53 minutes long, which is just the right amount of time for an animated movie to pick up, establish characters quickly, and then go full-speed ahead with action up to the very end.
