Jimmy Fallon was originally supposed to take over when Jay Leno's contract expired in September 2014. However, Leno suggested that Fallon take over earlier in February, to take advantage of the ratings for the 2014 Winter Olympics.
The show's studio, NBC Studio 6B, was the same studio from which The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson (1962) was originally broadcast. This was the first time "The Tonight Show" was regularly broadcast from New York City since Carson moved the show to Burbank in 1972.
In June 2015 Jimmy Fallon almost lost his finger after tripping over a braided rug in his kitchen. After surgery, for a few weeks, he presented the Tonight show with a bandage on his hand. In October that same year, he fell again at an event at Harvard. The following Tonight show, he started with the words "I'm your host, Trippy Fallon".
