Charlotte McKinley asks Father Brown to exorcise her house, which she believes is haunted by the ghost of her sister Elspeth, who disappeared nine years earlier. The priest believes somebody is fabricating a ghost but then Charlotte disappears from a locked room. Inspector Valentine suspects Charlotte's husband Victor, a former doctor struck off for irresponsible prescription and previously believed to have killed Elspeth. A skeleton is unearthed but it is not Elspeth's and a coded message in a book leads Father Brown to discover the fates of both sisters along with the legend of the family's hidden treasure.—don @ minifie-1

Charlotte McKinley, convinced that her sister Elsbeth Granger is haunting her house, calls Father Brown out in the middle of the night to conduct an exorcism. He flatly refuses, telling her there is no such thing as ghosts. Elsbeth went missing years ago and according to Mrs. McCarthy Charlotte's husband Victor was believed responsible but was never prosecuted due to lack of evidence. Lady Felicia thinks that's all nonsense and believes the girl simply eloped. When Charlotte vanishes from her study, Father Brown has two mysteries to solve. Father Brown refuses a pointless nocturnal request for exorcism of the house 'haunted' by Elsbeth Granger since her disappearance nine years ago, by her sister Charlotte McKinley, who soon disappears herself from the locked study. Inspector Valentine only suspects in both cases Charlotte's husband Victor, an MD barred from practicing for irresponsible prescription. A corpse is found by the gardener, hence suspect, but it's far too old.
