The Boogeyman

This one had the potential to be a really solid horror, but fell just short, landing at slightly above average. The foundational creep factor was there for sure... creating spooky, atmospheric scenes that I felt ended up being slightly cheapened by the amount of seemlingly lazy jump scares set throughout.

Because of this, I felt it didn't fully utilize or elaborate on its full potential, because it was there. It was also cheapened by its underdeveloped, cliche and almost juvenile script. It unfortunately did the movie a great disservice, making it feel like it was a regurgitation of trope after trope giving it a general air as if it were made for a younger audience.

What didn't feel juvenile was the monster. I quite liked the creature concept/design, and it gave very much that... creature opposed to boogeyMAN. It ended up reminding me a bit of the monster design for The Ritual/No One Gets Out Alive. He was creepy and anxiety inducing with a nice little addded mocking bird bonus that I enjoyed.

Another positive here was the acting. I have admittedly never seen any of these actors before and I particularly thought the main three family members did quite a good job giving down to earth, believable performances with what they had to work with. The secondary characters were not quite as successful like the shotgun mom and the mean girls at school.

This was not perfect nor one that will go down in the books by any means, but I found it generally successful, entertaining and creepy despite its clichéd and familiar tendencies. 5.5 rounding up to a 6, would recommend.
