At one point in the film, Angus the Scottish Bull states "I'm a bull, not a doctor." This is a likely nod to David Tennant's role as the 10th Doctor in the long running BBC Series Doctor Who (2005). This is also a nod to Star Trek as Dr McCoy, when doing something out of his expertise, made references such as 'I'm a Doctor, not a mechanic.'
Originally intended to be released in July 2017, then it was pushed back to December 22nd the same year, then it was pushed forward to December 15th, releasing the same day as Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017).
First lead role in an animated project for John Cena. Before that, he had previously landed the lead roles in Dave the Barbarian and the pilot to Ultimate Muscle: The Kinnikuman Legacy (2002), but both were never released to the public. He had also auditioned for Ron Stoppable in Kim Possible (2002).
John Powell also scored some of the previous films produced by Blue Sky Studios, which were Robots (2005), Ice Age: The Meltdown (2006), Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009), Ice Age: Continental Drift (2012), Rio (2011), Rio 2 (2014), and Dr. Suess' Horton Hears a Who! (2008).
This is the second Blue Sky Studios film, based on a book and animation, to have an original theme music being remade by its film composer. The first was The Peanuts Movie's (2015) "Linus and Lucy", "Skating", "Christmas Time Is Here", and "Christmas is Coming" having been remade by Christophe Beck. The second is Ferdinand's (2017) "Flower Theme" being remade by John Powell.
Blue Sky Studios's 8th PG Rated Movie, of which all their films but Horton Hears a Who! (2008), Rio (2011), Rio 2 (2014) and The Peanuts Movie (2015) have been Rated, as well as their 3rd non-Ice Age film to have that rating.

Possibly a nod to John Cena's co-worker Dwayne Johnson (the Rock), in the scene where Ferdinand wakes the rooster, you see that Jorgé is the same colors as HeiHei from Moana (2016). Jorge and HeiHei are phonetically similar, and comedic relief.
