What’s the best destination for spring TV? IndieWire doesn’t have a definitive answer, but as we do every month we’ll help you weigh the options with a breakdown of everything coming to your favorite streaming platforms in May.
The month is a prime time to have Disney+, what with the ongoing and buzzy success of “X-Men 97” and upcoming “Marvel Studios’ Assembled” going behind the scenes of the reboot series. May is of course the month of Star Wars, and the House of Mouse will celebrate with “Star Wars: Tales of the Empire” on May 4. Disney is also home to BBC America’s “Doctor Who,” which returns for a highly-anticipated 14th season with Ncuti Gatwa stepping into the Tardis as the new Doctor (he stepped into the role in December 2023 as part of the series’ beloved Christmas special tradition).

It’s a fairly big month on Prime Video in March, at least compared to the other streaming service offerings! There are are two major films arriving on Amazon’s streamer. The first is a remake of the Patrick Swayze action classic Road House. Stepping into the late Swayze’s shoes? A crazy-jacked Jake Gyllenhaal, who really seemed to want to go the extra mile for this project.
The other big film coming to Prime Video is Ricky Stanicky, and the plot sounds really fun! It follows three friends who have always blamed their mistakes on an imaginary guy called Ricky Stanicky. When they have to finally introduce people to Stanicky, they decide to hire a washed-up actor (John Cena) to impersonate him. Hilarity ensues, maybe? But if neither of those make your watchlist, there’s also the return of the animated hit series Invincible.

[This story contains spoilers for The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.]
Prequels are tough to get right. For every Better Call Saul, there are ten more stories that failed to enrich the works that came before them. However, Francis Lawrence’s The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes manages to not only stand on its own, but as a prequel, it also deepens the text of the Hunger Games films starring Jennifer Lawrence’s Katniss Everdeen.
The filmmaker chalks it up to the strength of author Suzanne Collins’ source material, as well as the performances of his two leads, Tom Blyth and Rachel Zegler. In one of the climactic scenes of the film, Blyth has to sell Coriolanus Snow’s transformation that would later define Donald Sutherland’s tyrannical version of the character, and Lawrence remains in awe of what the young actor accomplished with minimal dialogue.

Hollywood moviemaking has always been a numbers game, and right now the winning number appears to be two.
Zack Snyder is locking picture on part one of December’s Rebel Moon, his two-part space opera for Netflix. Christopher McQuarrie, the filmmaker behind Paramount and Skydance’s Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning, Part One, retreated to a house in the northeast in recent months to edit what he’s shot so far of his follow-up. And once the SAG-AFTRA strike ends, Wicked filmmaker Jon M. Chu has just a few days left of principal photography on the first of his two Broadway adaptations. Then there’s Dune: Part Two (delayed by the strike until March), a sequel to Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (no release date in sight) and Kevin Costner’s two-part western Horizon, hitting theaters six weeks apart next summer.
These two-parters can serve both art and commerce, say those who work on them.

Divergent author Veronica Roth is opening up about the film adaptation of her book series and the final film that never got made.
In a new interview, Roth says she was at “peace” with the fourth film of The Divergent Series getting scrapped. Lionsgate split Roth’s third book into two films for a grand finale to the franchise titling it Ascendent, but the film never saw the light of day.
“I mean, breaking things in two was all the rage at the time. That was why that decision was made,” Roth said in an interview with People. “But at that point, I think I always felt peace about it just because I knew the movies were taking a different track than the books, and if you change the lead-up, you change the ending. Veronica Roth, the author of the popular dystopian YA series “Divergent,” isn’t upset that the final film adaptation in the franchise never came to fruition, she revealed in a new interview with People.
The final book “Allegiant” was set to be split into two films, with the first releasing in 2016; the second part, however, never made it to the big screen. Roth said she that she has accepted this fact, given that she felt the films were going in a different direction than her novels.

Of all the film series to come out of the young adult fad, "The Hunger Games" is the best. "The Maze Runner" might have better action and set pieces, but "The Hunger Games" is narratively richer. It's also an excellent beginner's guide to how rebellions are formed in the real world, which has kept the franchise feeling uncomfortably topical in the years since it last graced the big screen. There's a reason why a "Hunger Games" revival in 2023 makes loads more sense than rebooting "Twilight" or redoing any of the myriad of failed sci-fi YA novel adaptations that followed in its wake.
There was, however, one unfortunate YA trend that "The Hunger Games" fell victim to, and that was dividing its finale into two parts. Even then, the series fared better than others. Splitting "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay" in two allowed "Part 1" to dig deeper into the revolution against the...

“Hunger Games” director Francis Lawrence says he wishes he could take back the decision to split the final book into two films.
While speaking to People about “Mockingjay – Part 1” and “Mockingjay – Part 2,” Lawrence said, “I totally regret it. I totally do. I’m not sure everybody does, but I definitely do.”
The decision to split the final book into two movies was announced in July 2012. Part 1 was released in theaters in November 2014 and Part 2 was released in November 2015. To Lawrence, the decision made sense at the time because the “two halves of ‘Mockingjay’ had their own separate dramatic questions.”
Of fans who were frustrated by the delay between movies, Lawrence said, “In an episode of television, if you have a cliffhanger, you have to wait a week or you could just binge it and then you can see the next episode. But making people wait a year, I think, came across as disingenuous,...

Nobody sets out to make a movie that will fail, be it a tiny independent production or the biggest of big blockbusters from a major studio. On the flip side, occasionally arrogance of a sort sets in and there is an element of presumed success with a film, and those projects -- more often than not -- feel doomed to fail. Such was the case with Lionsgate's 2016 big-budget fantasy play "Gods of Egypt," which bombed spectacularly upon its initial release. Yet, lofty ambitions existed as this was eyed as just the first entry in a brand new franchise. Before it all went to hell, that is.
The film, directed by Alex Proyas, cost a whopping $140 million to produce before marketing, putting it firmly in gigantic blockbuster territory. But it made a paltry $31 million in total at the domestic box office and topped out at $150 million worldwide. Per Variety, Lionsgate...

This post contains spoilers for "John Wick: Chapter 4."
"John Wick" is our greatest modern action franchise, but the movies have become more and more complicated as they have progressed, and some of the plot points in Chad Stahelski's "John Wick: Chapter 4" will only resonate with those who were taking notes in the last few chapters.
But the basics are all one really needs to follow the films: "John Wick" takes place in a fantasy universe where a measurable percentage of the human population are professional assassins. To accommodate them all, a complex underground society has formed, complete with its own bylaws and codes of honor. Assassins can gather in specially designated hotels where murder is off limits, and where they will be connected with sommeliers and tailors who will feed and dress them well, but also provide high-tech firearms and formal ware that is also bulletproof.

"Sometimes even to live is an act of courage." As much as this may be the perfect kind of ridiculous film to dismiss and forget, I can't stop thinking about Seneca. Made by German filmmaker Robert Schwentke, who has been working in Hollywood for years, he has returned to his roots to make something much more intelligent and so much angrier than his action blockbusters. It is an exceptionally wacky, weird, linguistically loquacious, intellectually stimulating, amusing, strange film that is just as indescribable as it is thought-provoking. I can already tell that most critics, actually most people at all who dare to watch this film, will hate it. It's heavy-handed and direct, especially at the end, which always upsets most people. Yet also so funky and, well, for lack of a better word – philosophical – that it just won't sit well with most viewers. Even if it is far from perfect,...

Russell Crowe (Gladiator) and Karen Gillan (Guardians of the Galaxy) star in Sleeping Dogs, a thriller that started filming in Australia this month. Adam Cooper is making his feature directorial debut with this project, working from a screenplay he wrote with his writing partner Bill Collage. Cooper and Collage’s previous collaborations include New York Minute, Accepted, Tower Heist, The Transporter Refueled, Exodus: Gods and Kings, Allegiant, and Assassin’s Creed.
The script Cooper and Collage wrote for Sleeping Dogs is based on the novel The Book of Mirrors by E. O. Chirovici. The film has the following synopsis: In the wake of a cutting-edge Alzheimer’s treatment, former homicide detective Roy Freeman is tasked with re-examining a brutal murder case from his past – the grisly murder of a college professor. Intrigued and fighting to regain his memory, Roy enlists his former partner to help him revive the investigation. This time though,...

When Divergent was first announced, it had all the ingredients to become a successful franchise. The eponymous book that the film was based on had a strong following. The cast had star names like Shailene Woodley and Kate Winslet and interesting newcomers like Theo James. Furthermore, Lionsgate (the film’s distribution company) had seen that Young Adult dystopian stories could find massive success. Previously, the studio hit a huge win with The Hunger Games movies. So when the Divergent franchise fizzled out, it was a shock to many people, including the actors.

Though Shailene Woodley may not seem like it, she was, in fact, a child actor. She was only five when she got her start in the entertainment industry. While she attended regular school, she also started getting consistent work and building her resume. Today, her CV spans more than two decades and features a bunch of great movies and TV shows. But there was a time, shortly before she was cast in Big Little Lies, that Woodley needed to take a hard stop with acting.

Though she was already a successful working actor prior to Big Little Lies, playing Jane Chapman was another boon to Woodley’s career. Even amid a star-studded cast, Woodley’s performance stood out and she earned an Emmy nomination for her portrayal of the young mom.

When Miles Teller and Shailene Woodley were cast to portray romantic interests in The Spectacular Now, they had no idea they’d form such a strong relationship off-screen. But working on the small film would spark the formation of a close friendship that still persists today. The actors have both stated multiple times that they truly enjoy working together and spending time together outside of work. But did they think they’d hit it off so well when they first met? Teller once gave his genuine first impression of Woodley.

To date, Teller and Woodley have starred in four films together. In Divergent, Insurgent, and Allegiant, the relationship between their characters was complex. In the best of times, they were reluctant allies; however, in the worst of times they were adversaries.

Shailene Woodley recently put down roots in Los Angeles by purchasing a beautiful home in the Hollywood Hills. But it wasn’t so long ago that the actor was embracing a more nomadic lifestyle. Long-time fans of Woodley know that in her 20s, the Three Women actor was fond of couch-surfing. In between filming projects, she’d often crash at her friends’ places all over the world. And it seems like Miles Teller wasn’t afraid to razz her a bit for it.

The project is described as a character-driven spy thriller. Element Pictures, the Irish banner behind the Emmy-nominated and BAFTA-winning hit adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People, has landed another buzzy coming-of-age novel from a fast-rising young author.
Following what has been described as a hotly-contested auction, the production company — in which Fremantle took a majority stake earlier in the year — has acquired the film and TV rights to Nicola Dinan’s debut novel Bellies ahead of its publication in the U.S. and U.K. next summer. Element, which also produced the adaptations of Rooney’s Conversations with Friends and Nancy Harris’ The Dry, is working with Dinan to turn the novel into an eight-part series.
Moving from London to Kuala Lumpur, New York to Cologne, Bellies follows two queer students, Tom and Ming, who fall in love at university and find their relationship dramatically upended when Ming comes out as trans and decides to transition.

Photo by Peter Hjorth. While many may proclaim the death of the author, and even more acknowledge that cinema is an art far more collaborative than the idea of a film's auteur suggests, there are nevertheless certain directors whose name on a film carries undeniable connotations. Among contemporary filmmakers, Danish provocateur Lars von Trier is one of the hardest to ignore. But this is not to say one knows exactly what one is getting with every von Trier picture. On the contrary, not only are his stylistic tendencies extensive and varied, but the stories he tells, even those ostensibly contained within thematic trilogies,...

Film fans love to speculate on what canceled movie productions would have become. What would it have been like to see Steven Spielberg's science fiction epic "Robopocalypse," Quentin Tarantino's Vega Brothers movie, Stanley Kubrick's ambitious "Napoleon" biopic, or Alejandro Jodorowsky's "Dune" adaptation? Would they be everything fans imagined them to be? Or crushing disappointments? While it's fun to speculate, we can't put our faith into something that doesn't exist. Likely, these films wouldn't have lived up to fans' massive expectations.
Intriguing projects often never see the light of day in today's world of blockbuster-focused cinema. If a project becomes stuck in "development hell" for too long, its participants may lose interest. The cast of The Gentlemen series is growing like a weed. See what I did there? After casting actor Theo James as the show’s star, Guy Ritchie’s Netflix series adaptation welcomes more stars to the cast. Joining James for the anticipated crime comedy are Vinnie Jones, Kaya Scodalerio, Giancarlo Esposito, Daniel Ings, Joely Richardson, and Peter Serafinowicz.
According to reports, Jones will star as Geoff Seacombe, the estate’s groundskeeper; Scodalerio will play Susie Glass, a compliment to Eddie Halstead (Theo James), who oversees Mickey Pearson’s drug business. Meanwhile, Ings will play Freddy Halstead, Eddie’s older sibling who owes dangerous people a lot of money; Richardson will play Lady Sabrina, Eddie and Freddy’s mother. Lastly, James plays the project’s lead character, Eddie Halstead, who inherits his father’s substantial estate and discovers he’s in charge of a marijuana empire owned by the notorious Mickey Pearson.

Warner Bros. Discovery has had a rough go of it recently. The newly-formed mega corporation’s decision to callously prune HBO Max’s servers of hours of content has led to mountains of bad PR and billions of dollars in market cap losses. Suffice it to say, a jam-packed list of new HBO Max releases for September 2022 would provide some welcome relief for the “House of the House of the Dragon.”
Unfortunately, HBO Max’s new releases this month are uncommonly light. It’s impossible to say whether this is the result of more Wbd meddling or simply some bad scheduling luck but either way it’s not going to make any executives’ seats less warm. There are only a handful of notable originals this month, led by season 2 of the Spanish language comedy Los Espookys on Sept. 16. That is joined by a pair of documentaries, Escape from Kabul on Sept.

In another mega M&a deal, Fremantle has taken a majority stake in Irish The Favourite, Room and Conversations with Friends producer Element Pictures.
The company, one of the most prolific and respected on the European drama circuit, joins Fremantle’s roster of drama producers including The Responder indie Dancing Ledge Productions, which recently became majority-owned by Fremantle, and Italian powerhouse Lux Vide.
Fremantle said the move underlines the “strategic plan to invest in and develop premium production companies and creative talent from around the world.” The global producer-distributor has recently signed talent deals with the likes of Angelina Jolie as it attempts to expand global footprint.

Here’s something that hasn’t been done with a musical before: Universal will release its feature take on the smash Broadway musical Wicked in two parts on December 25, 2024 and December 25, 2025. It’s a bold swing for a musical, which of late have been risky onscreen. However, this one is based on a legacy crowd-pleaser.
Jon M. Chu is directing the untold story of the Witches of Oz, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo. The pic is based on the bestselling novel by Gregory Maguire and adapted for the screen by the stage production’s book writer Winne Holzman and Oscar-winning composer and lyricist Stephen Schwartz.
Typically those movies getting broken into two parts have been blockbuster-level YA films based on books, i.e. Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and The Hunger Games: Mockingjay. While those were huge successes, the plan faltered with Lionsgate’s third Divergent movie, Allegiant,...
