Storyline

The true story of Hollywood's greatest comedy double act, Laurel and Hardy, is brought to the big screen for the first time. Starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as the inimitable movie icons, Stan and Ollie is the heart-warming story of what would become the pair's triumphant farewell tour. With their golden era long behind them, the pair embark on a variety hall tour of Britain and Ireland. Despite the pressures of a hectic schedule, and with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) - a formidable double act in their own right - the pair's love of performing, as well as for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public.

Trivia

Laurel & Hardy's arrival in Ireland was marked by tragedy, though the actors weren't aware of it at the time. Three Irishmen dove into the sea and swam out to meet the boat when it was about 100 yards from the dock. Forty yards from shore, they slipped beneath the surface and drowned. Their bodies were recovered the next day at low tide. See more »

User Reviews

I forgot they were actors.

This is not a film for those who didn't know Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy. This is a film for nostalgic fools like myself. The story is wonderful, the cinematic history valuable, the recreation of the old routines had tears in my eyes. But mostly it was the performance by two mature, leading actors who had the mannerisms and idiosyncrasies of one of the 20th century's most wonderful comedic duos so well learned, before long I had forgotten I wasn't watching the real Laurel and Hardy. Brilliantly executed and a pleasure to enjoy.
