The show takes a lot of the best of Project Runway with the added benefit of additional support from a mentor. It's interesting to see the dynamics between the mentors and the designers and to see how it affects the outcome of the design. The judges take on a more supportive role than the judges in Project Runway do, I can see that it might not be what some people are looking for but to me, we already have a lot of critical shows of this kind and I think it's a nice change. Since this is a show focused on mentoring I feel that the supportive approach with the judges makes a lot of sense.
My only complaint is that the models are even thinner than the ones used on Project Runway and I catch myself feeling really disturbed at times. There are two models in particular who are so thin that I can see their hip and pelvic bones through the actual clothing. I know that the purpose of a model is to be a moving "hanger" to display clothing but I feel like this is taking it way too far. Not to mention I catch myself feeling bad/ worrying for the models and not seeing the designs. Considering what a supporter Tim Gunn is of normal women being represented in fashion I was actually pretty shocked to see that the models on his show were the thinnest I have seen. Not that I would expect the models on any fashion show to be anything but slender but this takes it to an extreme.
