- Rani (Kangana Ranaut) is a 24-year-old, sheltered, meek, yet good-nature Punjabi girl living in Rajouri Garden, Delhi.
She is from a very conservative family which includes father (Yogendra Tiku), mother (Alka Badola Kausha), Chintu (Chinmai Chandranshuh) her brother, grandmother (Tripta Lakhanpal) and others. Rani's father owns a sweets shop. Her brother escorts her everywhere for her safety. Rani is engaged to be married, and the whole house is engrossed in the wedding preparations and festivities. All relatives are already at the family house as the mood is festive. Sonal (Nayani Dixi) is Rani's best friend. Rani is excited to get married and is in love with her fiance Vijay, who has recently returned from London. Rani prays that everything goes well on her wedding night and she would visit Mata Vaishno Devi as a pilgrimage for her wish coming true.
Two days before her marriage, her fiance Vijay (Rajkummar Rao) meets with her in a local cafe to tell her he no longer wants to marry her. He explains that his lifestyle has changed after living abroad, and Rani's conservative habits would be the wrong match for him. Vijay says that life for him is all about travel and business meetings and Rani would struggle to adjust into that world. Rani believes that Vijay has found someone else. Rani begs Vijay to reconsider saying that her father would get a heart attack and that nobody would marry her, but Vijay is unmoved.
Stunned at the development, Rani shuts herself in her room for a day, recalling how she and Vijay met and fell in love. Rani and Vijay's parents were friends with each other, and they met at Rani's father's sweets shop. Vijay fell in love with Rani at first sight. Vijay was studying Engineering, while Rani was studying Home Science. Vijay starts to pursue her. Vijay calls her "My Queen". Rani eventually agrees to go out on a date with Vijay. Gradually, they fall in love. Dadi counsels Rani that life has a way to get you where you need to be and asks her to live her life, as she never knows what is in store for the future. Rani had already withdrawn all her savings from her bank account for her honeymoon.
Rani decides to take control of her life and plans to go alone on her already booked honeymoon to visit her favorite place, Paris - which she'd never seen before - and Vijay's favorite place, Amsterdam. Rani's grandmother approves of her decision and assures her that sometimes things like this occur for the better. After initially hesitating, her parents agree, and Rani departs.
Rani takes the Air France flight to Paris and navigates her way to her hotel which was registered under her married name. In Paris, she meets Vijayalakshmi (Lisa Haydon), who has a French/Spanish mother and an Indian father and works at the hotel where Rani is staying. Vijayalakshmi is a free spirit and kind of heart. She helps Rani whenever she gets into trouble in Paris. Overwhelmed by Paris and having gotten into trouble twice - once with the local police and once with a robber - Rani soon makes up her mind to return to India.
However, Vijayalakshmi becomes her friend and confidante and shows her around Paris. The two have a series of adventures, during which Rani relives the memories of Vijay patronizing her and forbidding her from dancing and drinking - which she's free to do in Paris. Once while shopping, Rani tries out what she considers to be a revealing outfit and accidentally sends a selfie of her in it to Vijay instead of Vijayalakshmi. She quickly realizes her mistake, but unknown to her, the selfie prompts Vijay to begin searching for her.
Eventually, the time comes for her to bid an emotional farewell to Vijayalakshmi and board the train for Amsterdam. However, when she arrives in Amsterdam, she finds to her horror that her hostel room is to be shared with three guys, Taka from Japan (Jeffrey Ho), Tim (Joseph Guitobh) from France, and Oleksander (Mish Boyko) from Russia.
Soon, the four become good friends and explore the city, spending their days shopping, sight-seeing, visiting a sex shop, and meeting pole dancers in a club. Rani befriends a pole dancer named Roxette/Rukhsar (Sabeeka Imam), a Pakistani girl who is the sole breadwinner for her family back in Lahore and is also a friend of Vijayalakshmi. Rani gains self-confidence here, as she drives her friend's home when they're drunk and earns money in a cook-off by selling Gol Gappa. After the cook-off event, the Italian host and restaurant owner, Marcello (Marco Canadea), shares an intimate moment with her, and Rani experiences her first 'Indo-Italian' kiss with him. However, they choose to amicably part ways. She learns more about her friends' backgrounds and begins to understand how different life can be for people in other parts of the world.
One day, the four friends find Vijay waiting for Rani in front of the hostel. Vijay apologizes to Rani and asks her to reconsider their relationship. Their conversation escalates as he tries to grab hold of Rani, but her friends retaliate, and she asks him to leave. Rani decides to miss out on a concert with her friends to meet with Vijay and discuss their future. Vijay continues to judge Rani's new friends and behavior, like drinking champagne and her choice of living with roommates of the opposite gender and tells her that she doesn't know foreigners. This causes her to leave abruptly, saying that she would rather speak to him after returning to Delhi. Rani then meets up with her friends one last time at the concert. After bidding a tearful farewell to them, she returns to India.
Back in Delhi, Rani visits Vijay at his home. Thinking she has decided to forgive him, he and his family start discussing wedding plans. Instead, Rani hands Vijay her engagement ring and says, "thank you," suggesting that he gave her the opportunity to explore the world and develop herself by rejecting her. She then walks away with a confident smile on her face.
