Besides handling the current murder/drugs case, this episode develops key backstory material: beginning with Harmon-narrated explication of the origin of Gibb's famous Rules, and a strong confrontation between Franks and Gibb's dad (a role well-played by Aussie star Robert Taylor, who reminds me ot the late, great character actor Charles Napier), which along with memories of his late wife give this show important hints and insights into the demons that drive the Gibbs character. Plus a terrific variation on Gibbs' emergency-stop in the elevator shtick.

The resolution of the current case was surprising, and the team's reliance (about 35 years ago) upon pre-digital era technology is fun to watch.

Pan-Am, the airline chosen by Jackson Gibbs to hop back home, was one the earliest players in the passenger air transport industry, declared bankruptcy around the timeframe of the prequel's setting, 1991. Goofs
In the NCIS universe, Mike Franks did not know Gibbs' father, Jackson Gibbs, when Gibbs was a probie. Gibbs introduced Franks to Jackson in the Season 8 premiere Spider and the Fly (2010), and it was clear they did not previously know each other.
