Sundance London: ‘American Animals’ Review: Dir. Bart Layton (2018)

American Animals review: Bart Layton’s latest gets a UK debut as the surprise film at the 2018 Sundance London film festival.

American Animals review by Scott Davis.

American Animals review

Who doesn’t love a good heist movie? One of the more successful and indeed thrilling sub-genres of cinema, there’s an immediate allure to them in that somewhere in the dark recesses of our minds, we wonder whether we could have the foresight and intelligence to pull it off as convincingly as those on-screen. The answer is probably firmly in the negative category but the thrill and excitement that comes with such things is what keeps us coming back to the cinema equivalent. In writer/director Bart Layton’s first semi-narrative feature, he takes us into such a world where a group of young men believed that they have the necessary skills over a decade ago but found real-life much more unforgiving.

Music supervisor Maggie Phillips chats adding female voices to ‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ and going ‘bigger and weirder’ for ‘Legion’ [Exclusive Video Interview]

When music supervisor Maggie Phillips joined the creative team on Hulu’s “The Handmaid’s Tale” in season two she wanted to “feature more female artists” on the soundtrack because “it’s such a female-driven show.” The Emmy Award-winning series imagines a future in which women are forced to become concubines in a theocratic society, and it centers on one woman, June Osborne (Elisabeth Moss), who fights against that system. Phillips chose songs to reflect June’s music taste, asking herself, “What would she have played in her head?” June “seems like the kind of lady that would want a lady representing her,” so Phillips sought out female vocalists and musicians to underscore various scenes. Watch our exclusive video interview above.

Film Review: ‘What We Started’

Film Review: ‘What We Started’
For DJs, short attention spans can often be assets. Part of the job, after all, is always having a new track cued up before the audience has a chance to start getting bored with the current one. But what works in a nightclub set doesn’t always work in a film, as electronic dance music documentary “What We Started” demonstrates. Featuring appropriately fizzy visuals, a wealth of music and archival footage, and a deep crate of interview subjects, Bert Marcus and Cyrus Saidi’s film is more interested in flow than focus – though it offers a decent enough primer on dance music history, it’s so eager to play all the hits that it never quite settles into any particular groove.

Although “What We Started” is largely concerned with presenting an abridged overview of dance music’s evolution, it does locate an interesting hook by profiling two DJs as they approach two very different milestones.

Alia Shawkat and Holliday Grainger to Topline Sophie Hyde’s “Animals”

Shawkat and Grainger on the set of “Animals”: Brocklehurst Productions

“Animals” is inching closer towards the big screen. Alia Shawkat (“Search Party”) and Holliday Grainger (“Tulip Fever”) have been cast in Sophie Hyde’s adaptation of Emma Jane Unsworth’s best-selling novel. A press release announced the news.

The comedy follows Laura (Grainger) and Tyler (Shawkat), hedonistic best friends and drinking buddies whose lives are turned upside down when Laura becomes engaged to a man who decides to go teetotal. Unsworth penned the adaptation of her book.

Currently shooting in Dublin, “Animals” is an official Irish/Australian co-production from Vico Films and Closer Productions.

The pic marks Hyde’s follow-up to “52 Tuesdays,” her feature debut. The acclaimed coming-of-age drama centers on a 16-year-old and her transgender parent in the midst of transitioning. The film’s title refers to the fact that the teen and her parent see each other exclusively on Tuesday afternoons.

The Indie TV Dream: Here Are the Ambitions and Realities Facing Sundance’s First Full TV Section

Before Sundance fully embraced television, it was already making small screen dreams come true.

“Last year, our wildest dream coming into the Episodic Short Form program was to sell our web series to television, and that’s exactly what happened,” Josh Feldman and Shoshannah Stern said to IndieWire.

Feldman and Stern created a series called “The Chances” that premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival. It’s returning to Sundance in 2018, but this time as a fully-fledged TV show with distribution, a full first season in the can, and an official release date — February 14, 2018.

“That web series was picked up from Sundance last year by Sundance Now, developed out from its short-form to a long-form of 22-minute episodes […] and they’ve already shot the first season,” Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro said in an interview with IndieWire. “So we’re showing that in our independent series, because it’s Sundance Now, but

New Ricky Gervais Comedy Special “Humanity” Gets Netflix Premiere Date

When it comes to comedy specials, Ricky Gervais only deals with, ya know, small-fry topics like Animals (2003), Politics (2004), Fame (2007), and Science (2009). His upcoming special, Humanity, looks to follow suit. First teased in 2013, the busy Gervais has finally found time to record his latest stand-up show at the Apollo Hammersmith in London, which will see its debut globally on Netflix on March 13th. Of his previous specials, Fame is (in my opinion) by far the best. It came at a time when Gervais was also collaborating on projects with Office co-creator Stephen Merchant

Sundance 2018 Indie Episodic Preview: The Most Anticipated TV Pilots and Premieres at This Year’s Festival
Don’t let the title fool you: The Sundance Film Festival has been featuring television programs for years, be it the slew of documentaries that end up on HBO, Showtime, and Netflix or pilots that earn a special showcase like “Animals.” did in 2015.

But 2018 is special. This year, Sundance is dedicating an entire section to episodic programming, including short-form series, docu-series, traditional pilots, and more experimental premieres. It’s all coming together under the Indie Episodic banner, and it’s all designed with one clear mission:

“There is no clear path to series if you’re trying to do it independently — if you’re going to try and shoot your own pilot, and then try and get picked up,” Sundance programmer Charlie Sextro told IndieWire. “There’s a clear way [in] making an independent film: It gets picked up at Sundance, and then it gets out to the world.
