Jon Stewart Finds Next Directing Gig With Steve Carell as Top Choice to Star (Exclusive)

Jon Stewart Finds Next Directing Gig With Steve Carell as Top Choice to Star (Exclusive)
Jon Stewart looks to have found his next gig after staying off the grid since leaving “The Daily Show” in 2015 — and he’s bringing a familiar friend on board.

The former talk show host will direct “Irresistible,” a political satire based on his original idea, sources tell Variety. Sources say Steve Carell is the top choice to star, though financing and scheduling needs to be worked out first.

Plot details have yet to be revealed, but the movie will be in Stewart’s political wheelhouse. His first directing gig was 2014’s political drama “Rosewater,” which centered on journalist Maziar Bahari, who was detained by Iranian forces who brutally interrogated him under suspicion that he was a spy.

Stewart will also produce, along with Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment. Sources say the project is in the beginning stages of development as financiers and distributors come on board. It is currently unknown when production will start.

Deadpool 2 Is Getting a PG-13 Rerelease This Christmas

Deadpool 2 Is Getting a PG-13 Rerelease This Christmas
Believe it or not, it sounds like Deadpool 2 is getting a PG-13 release later this year. Fox scored a home run earlier this summer with the highly-anticipated sequel and it looks like they're doing just about anything they can to squeeze everything out of that cash cow while they still can. That's apparently going to involve them somehow getting the movie down from its very R-rated cut to a PG-13 version, which could allow younger viewers to see it who may not have had the chance to previously.

According to a new report, the studio is indeed planning to release a PG-13 cut of Deadpool 2 in theaters this December. This comes as the studio has done some major shifting with their release calendar. Alita: Battle Angel had previously been set for release on December 21, but that's been shifted to February 14, 2019, which was when Dark Phoenix was supposed to arrive.

Holmes and Watson Trailer Has Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly on the Case

Holmes and Watson Trailer Has Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly on the Case
The first trailer for Holmes & Watson has finally arrived. Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly haven't appeared in a movie together as a lead duo in over a decade. The last time it happened? 2008's Step Brothers, which has since attained its status as a comedy classic. And let's not forget their first collaboration, Talladega Nights. Now, finally, Ferrell and Reilly are back in a very different kind of comedy that sees them playing the beloved characters of Sherlock Holmes and his trusty sidekick John Watson.

Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly have this first trailer loaded with slapstick gags aplenty. The whole idea of turning the Sherlock Holmes mythos into a comedic farce such as this has provided the loveable comedic duo with quite a bit of fuel. Though, admittedly, the trailer doesn't have any terribly memorable gags. And they do, very forcibly, include the saying "No s***, Sherlock" in a rather cringy moment.

Christian Bale's Dick Cheney Biopic Gets a Title, Trailer Coming Next Week
Director Adam McKay's previously untitled Dick Cheney biopic is now officially titled. The movie, which chronicles the former Vice President to George W. Bush, has simply been titled Vice. This title had been suspected recently, as IMDb has listed that as the title for several weeks now, but Annapurna Pictures, who will distribute the awards season hopeful this winter, made the news official today.

In addition to revealing the title for the Dick Cheney biopic, which features Christian Bale in the title role, the studio also announced that the first trailer will arrive online next week on Wednesday, October 3. We got a few glimpses, thanks to some set photos, of Bale in character previously and it looks like he's made a stunning transformation for the part. Bale is historically very committed to his roles and he gained a lot of weight to play the political figure. It will be

Warner Bros. Sets Clint Eastwood’s ‘The Mule’ for December Release

  • The Wrap
Warner Bros. announced on Thursday that it will release Clint Eastwood’s next film, “The Mule,” on Dec. 14.

Eastwood stars as Earl Stone, a man in his 80s who is broke, alone, and facing foreclosure of his business when he is offered a job that simply requires him to drive. What he doesn’t know is that he is actually being employed to smuggle drugs, and while he quickly gains the favor of the cartel and better pay, he also catches the attention of the DEA.

Warner Bros. tells TheWrap that the mid-December slot was selected because it was seen as a spot where “The Mule” could stand out as an option for moviegoers looking for an adult drama. Other films being released on Dec. 14 include Sony’s animated “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” Stx’s romantic comedy “Second Act,” and the Universal fantasy film “Mortal Engines.”

Updated Academy Award predictions for late September

The Oscars are still months away, but if you can believe it, only a few potential contenders have yet to reveal themselves. A Trailer for Adam McKay’s Dick Cheney biopic (now called Vice) is really the last truly unseen contender that could majorly shake up the race. So, especially as yours truly sees the big time players (I saw If Beale Street Could Talk and will be watching First Man as you read this), crunch time is coming fast and furious. There’s a lot still to be determined, category placement wise, as you’ll see below, but big decisions are being made. There’s some low level tinkering at play today, mostly just to keep things up to date. Of note is that while it was previously thought that Ben Foster would be going Supporting for Leave No Trace, that is no longer the case. So, he’s Lead.

  • Indiewire
Hollywood’s AFI Fest comes in November, at the end of the fall festival season, and offers an opportunity to launch late-breaking films right where the most Academy voters live, from Clint Eastwood’s “American Sniper” to Ava DuVernay’s “Selma.” Last year, the AFI gave the opening-night stage to Dee Rees’ “Mudbound” on its way to earning four Oscar nominations.

Focus Features, after debuting Joel Edgerton’s conversion therapy drama “Boy Erased” at Telluride and Toronto, now world premieres two of its late-year openings at AFI Fest. On November 8, “On the Basis of Sex”, Mimi Leder’s biopic starring Oscar nominee Felicity Jones (“The Theory of Everything”) as Ruth Bader Ginsberg, will open the festival.

Closing the festival on November 15 will be Josie Rourke’s “Mary Queen of Scots”, starring Oscar nominees Saoirse Ronan (“Lady Bird”) and Margot Robbie as squabbling royal cousins.

Both could be factors in this year’s Oscar race.

Nicole Kidman and Steve Carell could make Oscar history with double nominations
Since the introduction of the supporting categories at the 9th Oscar ceremony, 11 performers have contended in both acting categories in the same year, with seven of them prevailing in one of their races. At the 2019 Academy Awards, Oscar winner Nicole Kidman and Oscar nominee Steve Carell are hoping to make history and join this exclusive roster of double nominees.

Kidman has earned rave reviews for her turns in “Destroyer” and “Boy Erased.” The former finds her portraying a troubled Los Angeles detective, determined to bring down an old nemesis, while the latter has Kidman in a supporting turn, portraying the mother of a young man (Lucas Hedges) who is pressured into enrolling in a gay conversion therapy program. Kidman has previous Oscar nominations for “Moulin Rouge!” (2001); “The Hours” (2002); “Rabbit Hole” (2010); and “Lion” (2016), winning for “The Hours.”

Updated Academy Award predictions for early September

Things are getting interesting. Movies are playing at prestigious film festivals, contenders are being solidified as Oscar hopefuls, and the season is in full swing now. Frankly, you can even make the claim that there’s a solid top five contenders for Best Picture right now. The smart money is on one of these titles taking home the gold…BlacKkKlansman, The Favourite, First Man, Roma, or A Star is Born. That’s how it looks here in early to mid September, before any real awards have been given out. Plenty can and will change, but that’s what the tea leaves are showing here as fall gets ready to hit. For this update, I’ve thankfully removed Best Popular Film, as that category has been shelved for now. Also, it reflects how we’re down to just a few unseen titles. In fact, I’ve even seen a handful of these now,
