Not What You Think, And In A Good Way
13 December 2018 | by TheAll-SeeingISee all my reviews

Just so you know...the shrewd storytelling of Tim Bartell's Dirty Beautiful might sneak up on you and surprise you. Because you're likely expecting romantic comedy of the light-hearted ilk, and that is by no means what you're about to be served.

What Dirty Beautiful provides instead is an ambitious and nuanced portrayal of unhealthy human relationships. The brand of humor here is complicated and elevated, and manifests itself in truisms about romance that eschew belly laughs and instead target the cerebral cortex. This is the kind of material that can be unforgiving to poor actors, and fortunately Bartell proves attuned to this in his casting - his two leads are excellent. Their complimenting performances result in characters that are as dangerous to each other as they are alluring. We find ourselves wanting them to stay away from one another for the sake of the greater good. Yet the character design and acting also allow us to identify true affection when it surfaces, which makes us hopeful - for them, and for ourselves, as we all seek to prevail at romance despite its prerequisite imperfections.

There is hope at the end of Dirty Beautiful, and it comes with the realization that we've just seen a very strong film.
