"A" goes after Hanna in an unexpected way; Spencer works overtime to decipher the stories in Ali's diary; Aria is upset with the new friend Mike has made.

Open with Aria returning home to find her brother Mike is having a fairly large party. She's upset because she was put in charge and tells him to kick everybody out.

Hanna has been reading criminal novels by someone named James Patterson and getting ideas related to A. Spencer is up transcribing page from Alison's journal and calls Hanna for help. Hanna tells Spencer she wasn't invited to the movie with Emily because Emily is so mad at Spencer.

Aria and Emily find Mona upstairs in Aria's house. She was invited by Mike and they are suspicious.

The next day Aria asks Mike about the "deal" with Mona. They met a counseling group at school. He asks why she can't forgive the messenger if she's forgiven their father.

Emily's father Wayne tells her the car had been shut down from a remote location. This freaks out Emily and she no longer wants to drive.

Maggie stops by school to see Ezra. She's there to figure out her lease and has left Malcolm back in Seattle. Ezra is pissed. Aria shows up at the end of the conversation and he tells her "people get what they deserve, eventually."

While looking at books Holbrook apologizes to Hanna for what happened to her and Ashley during the investigation. He suggests a new book for her to try.

Emily tells Hanna about the likelihood that A shut off her car remotely. She's sure they aren't safe anywhere. Hanna wants Emily to bury the hatchet with Spencer, just as Spencer shows up. Emily leaves.

Aria asks Mona what she's up to with Mike. Mona references Jesse, the new guidance counselor. She mentions being squeezed out by the "inner circle."

Spencer runs into Andrew and realizes she's completely forgotten about a huge test in physics. He says he's been up all night but appears to look great. She asks him to stop by later and share notes.

Ezra speaks with Mona alone in his classroom.

Hanna bonds with Holbrook over the mystery novels she's reading.

Aria meets with Jesse. She references Mike befriending Mona and calls her "bad news" and "the devil." She asks him not to encourage them being together. He wants her to join a group he's running.

Ezra sends somebody a text referring to their being a setback with Alison. Wayne stops by to ask him about Emily. He tells Ezra about Emily staying at Alison's place and asks for some help. Ezra offers to give her an extra project.

Andrew helps Spencer study. She closes the door and asks him to share his secret for staying up and studying. He has a legit prescription and lets her have a few pills.

That night Emily hears something. She grabs scissors and nearly stabs Wayne when he comes through the door. We see there was a handprint outside her window.

Spencer reads a story about Alison being at a college pub with her mystery man. They discuss Alison's writing. Alison reaches over and they kiss.

Spencer stops by Hanna that night at 4am and tells her the pub from the story will be a key.

Aria runs into Maggie and rips her for showing up without her son. She brings up the fact Maggie lied to Ezra about Malcolm and blackmailed his family. Aria ends up shoving Maggie's box and breaks a picture frame.

Emily tells Aria not to worry about the incident with Maggie, since she and Ezra are no longer dating. Aria doesn't tell her. Emily tells her she's working on a play with Ezra.

Spencer runs into Ezra at the pub. He's eating the exact same pie from Alison's story, though he tells her he's going off a server's recommendation.

Aria leaves Ezra a message apologizing about the interaction with Maggie.

Hanna appears to leave in the middle of a dentist's appointment. But she is actually in the file room and steals one of the sign-in sheets. The doctor's assistant leaves.

Jesse runs into Aria at the coffee shop. She tells him she admits she has some things to work through but doesn't want to join the group. She tells him she's worried about Mike.

Hanna returns to the chair and someone comes up from behind her and forces the gas mask over her face. The person then grabs a hypodermic and holds Hanna's lip.

The server gives Spencer the beer Ezra had already ordered. This is also what the mystery man ordered in Alison's story. She flashes to the story with Ezra kissing Alison.

While working late at school Emily hears noises. She calls out but nobody answers. The door to the classroom closes and some loud music metal music starts coming through the PA. The lights start flashing and she calls her father to come get her. She sees shadows of someone moving in the hallway and a sign flashes "Act normal, bitch."

Hanna wakes up on the chair. There is blood on her mouth.

She sees her father pull up but can't open the window. Wayne finds the door closed. A shadowy figure tries to get into the classroom. She breaks a window and yells for her father to help her. Wayne climbs up the side of the building, opens the window and gets her out. The person, wearing a dark hood, gets into just after they reach the ground. Suddenly Wayne collapses. An ambulance arrives to take Wayne to the hospital. He tells Emily he's had some tests done and there are issues with his heart.

With her father staying in the hospital Emily stays with Aria. Aria has contacted Spencer, who arrives moment later and embraces Emily. Hanna arrives a second later and tells them about A and the dentist. Her jaw hurts and she doesn't know what happened. They look inside her mouth and Spencer pulls out a tiny message. Using a magnifying glass they read A's note: "I told you, dead girls can't smile. Stop looking."
