Christina Ricci, Hollywood Contrarian, Doesn’t Care What You Think Of Her

Christina Ricci, Hollywood Contrarian, Doesn’t Care What You Think Of Her
Christina Ricci knows people judge her. She grew up in the public eye as the Goth girl, the alternative chick, the youthful indie darling. For her, those tacit critiques just provide the excuse to execute another hard turn.

“I’m a natural contrarian. So anytime someone tries to tell me what I am, I immediately change and I’m something else,” she said. “I can’t help it; I’m a total asshole in that respect. I never give people that. Sometimes it’s terrible and I should really just allow people to view me the way they want to, but I have a real desire and drive to define myself and to not be defined by others.”

As a child star, she was best known for her role as the malevolent Wednesday Addams in “The Addams Family.” In her teen years, she demonstrated a fondness for outrageous comments about

Clea DuVall & Sally El Hosaini Among Selectees for Universal’s Directors Intensive

DuVall in “Lizzie Borden Took an Ax”: Chris Reardon/Lifetime Television

Universal Filmed Entertainment Group has announced the first eight filmmakers chosen for its “Directors Intensive: Pitch to Premiere” initiative — and seven of the participants are women. Per Deadline, helmers like Clea DuVall (“The Intervention”), Sally El Hosaini (“My Brother the Devil”), and Tanya Hamilton (“Queen Sugar”) were selected for the week-long program.

Universal is partnering with the Sundance Institute FilmTwo program and AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women (AFI Dww) for Directors Intensive, which is “designed to introduce selected filmmakers to executives from Universal Pictures and Focus Features and offer a look inside the studio’s production process from development to distribution.” Duvall, El Hosaini, and Hamilton are all FilmTwo Fellows.

“With this program we hope to create an opportunity that not only leverages the access these two initiatives provide to our studio’s executives, creative partners, and storied lot, but to also establish an inspired and unique network of champions to build upon the directors’ career momentum and development while supporting a new generation of incredibly talented filmmakers,” explained Janine Jones-Clark, senior vp of global talent development and inclusion.

Four AFI Dww directors will also be participating in the intensive: Joey Ally (“Joy Joy Nails,” “Flip the Script”), “New Deep South: House of Jxn” helmer Rosie Haber, and narrative shorts directors Tannaz Hazemi (“Before the Bomb”) and Manjari Makijany (“I See You”).

While it’s great to see female filmmakers receive opportunities like this, it’s worth noting that Duvall, El Hosaini, and Hamilton experienced feature directors who have already broken into the industry — and likely already know about the processes of filmmaking from development to distribution. It’s encouraging to see Universal supporting women filmmakers in this intensive, but there should also be programs designed specifically for emerging directors like Ally, Haber, Hazemi, and Makijany. They are still establishing their careers and presumably stand to gain the most from experiences like Directors Intensive.

Clea DuVall & Sally El Hosaini Among Selectees for Universal’s Directors Intensive was originally published in Women and Hollywood on Medium, where people are continuing the conversation by highlighting and responding to this story.

First Poster for the New Saw Film Jigsaw Wants You To Become Jigsaw

The first poster has been released for the next film in the Saw franchise. It was recently revealed that the film would be called Jigsaw, after the crazed killer that made the horror franchise famous. This is the eighth Saw film and it comes seven years after the last film, Saw: The Final Chapter, which obviously wasn't the final chapter.

Bodies are turning up around the city, each having met a uniquely gruesome demise. As the investigation proceeds, evidence points to one man: John Kramer. But how can this be? The man known as Jigsaw has been dead for over a decade. Or has an apprentice picked up the mantle of Jigsaw, perhaps even someone inside the investigation?

Franchise star Tobin Bell is set to return to the franchise in some capacity. He will actually be at San Diego Comic-Con doing autographs. I imagine we'll end up getting our first trailer at the convention.

Saw 8 Poster Wants You to Become Jigsaw

Saw 8 Poster Wants You to Become Jigsaw
Do you want to play a game? If this poster for Jigsaw, the upcoming eighth installment of the Saw franchise, is to be believed, you may actually be the one creating the games this time around. Lionsgate has just released the first official poster for Jigsaw and it is inviting you to become Jigsaw. What does that mean? Someone needs to take up that mantle since Tobin Bell's John Kramer has been dead for a long time. Looks like this poster is teasing a job opening for those who might be interested in setting up some twisted death traps.

The Saw Twitter account unveiled the poster for Jigsaw, which features a pig's head in a wig on a table with the word "become." over the movie's title. That may give us some clues about the story in Saw 8, which has been kept under wraps up to this point. Does

Saw 8: Legacy Gets Retitled Jigsaw, New Logo Unveiled

Saw 8: Legacy Gets Retitled Jigsaw, New Logo Unveiled
Oh, what a Halloween we'll have this year. There are plenty of ghouls and goblins heading towards the local cinema. But perhaps more awaited is the return of Jigsaw! Yes, John Kramer will be back this October as the Saw legacy continues. The eighth movie in the series, this latest installment promises to rejuvenate the horror franchise after laying dormant for several years. Today, we have the official logo along with these words from Lionsgate.

"One of the highest grossing Horror franchises of all time is back, taking the Jigsaw killer's signature brand of twisted scenarios to the next level."

As previously reported, Jigsaw will be in theaters the weekend of Halloween, starting October 27, 2017. Lionsgate did not offer any more on the story, but we do have some ideas about where this particular installment is heading. The story takes place seven years after Saw: The Final Chapter. And it stars Laura Vandervoort (Bitten, Smallville) and Hannah Anderson (Shoot the Messenger, Lizzie Borden Took an Ax) in the leads.

It was previously reported that Tobin Bell will be back as the main villain John Kramer, albeit via flashbacks as he's been dead since the third Saw movie, unless there is something sinister afoot that we don't yet know. Michael and Peter Spierig of Daybreakers fame are helming this latest installment. Pete Goldfinger and Josh Stolberg are penning the screenplay with help from original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell. Producers include Mark Burg, Gregg Hoffman, and Oren Koules.

As far as John Kramer is concerned, early reports on the film indicated that he'll be back in a limited capacity. A glorified cameo. He is the Mickey Mouse of this saga, introduced 14 years ago, at a time when Saw was considered a breakthrough in the horror genre. It not only spawned 6 sequels and healthy filmmaking careers for James Wan and Leigh Whannell, but it also started a Halloween tradition that ran straight through for seven very successful years. For a couple of years, Paranormal Activity stood in its place while it hibernated. But now the iconic series is raring and ready to go, with its pig masks back in place.

Set photos revealed that there will be some grave robbing going down in the opening moments of this next installment. And these bodies turn up all over the city. Each corpse has met their own unique demise. An investigation gets underway. And all fingers point to John Kramer, aka Jigsaw. But how can this be? Jigsaw has been dead for more than a decade. The belief is that an apprentice has stepped in to pick up the mantle left behind by Kramer. And the clues may lead to someone embedded within the investigation. Neither Costas Mandylor nor Cary Elwes, both exposed as Kramer apprentices in past installments, are returning in Jigsaw, unless their appearance is planned as a surprise for fans. Though not officially confirmed by Lionsgate, the rest of the cast is believed to include Mandela Van Peebles, Brittany Allen, Callum Keith Rennie, Matt Passmore, Hannah Emily Anderson, Josiah Black, Shaquan Lewis, Michael Bolsvert, and James Gomez.

Jon Cor's Ryan from the last installment, 2010's Saw 3D, is rumored to be back in this sequel. Though it isn't known how much time he gets in the overall plot. Ryan was seen in the opening trap with Sebastian Pigot's Brad in Saw 7. Writers Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan previously revealed in that film's commentary track for the Blu-ray and DVD release, that it was Ryan and Brad who were wearing the pig masks at the end of the film, leading to speculation they may be the ones who unearth Jigsaw's grave in this new installment. Jigsaw died in Saw III, but he has been featured through flashbacks in ever subsequent Saw movie. With Tobin Bell returning here, it sounds like Saw fans are in for an old school treat that will terrorize their soul. While we await the first teaser trailer, take a look at the official logo.

New ‘Saw’ movie gets a new title and logo

For those that are unaware, there is a new Saw movie in some stage of production, due for release later this year. Up until now it has been called Saw: Legacy, but that looks to have changed now to simply Jigsaw.

Due to arrive in cinemas on October 27th Stateside (and UK cinemas a week earlier on October 20th), just in time for Halloween, the film revolves around various dead bodies that begin to turn up all over the city, each meeting their demise in a variety of grisly ways. All investigations begin to point the finger at deceased killer John Kramer, the Jigsaw of the title, and the villain from the previous seven movies.

The horror film is directed by the Spierig brothers (Michael and Peter) and stars Laura Vandervoort (Bitten, Smallville) and Hannah Anderson (Shoot the Messenger, Lizzie Borden Took an Ax).

There aren’t too many other details about the film, or indeed if Tobin Bell will return as Kramer, but we do have a flashy new logo courtesy of the studio that has just popped up online. Check that out above.

To follow up this week’s strong character piece, “Baby,” the producers have decided to tread uncharted water, at least for this show.

The case of Lizzie Borden is no doubt one of the most notorious bits of true crime in American history. Pretty much everyone is familiar with the story and has likely heard the “Lizzie Borden took an ax….” nursery rhyme at some point in their life.
