Gareth Edwards "dropped everything" to direct the film, stating before production, "I was about to take a break and I started writing my next idea for a film and this is the only movie that would make me drop everything like a stone and dive right in. I love Jurassic Park (1993)...so this opportunity is like a dream to me. And to work with Frank Marshall and Universal and David Koepp, who's writing the script, I think they're all legends. So I'm just very excited."
Glen Powell turned down a role, as he didn't feel he could add anything to the film, but went on to praise the script and express his love for the franchise.
David Leitch was in talks to direct the film, but eventually turned it down because of creative differences with Universal.
Speaking with Vanity Fair, Gareth Edwards revealed how the new terrifying mutated dinosaur, who can be briefly glimpsed in the official trailer was designed, explaining that he drew upon classic movie monsters that have been scaring audiences for decades. "When you make a creature, you get a big, massive pot and you pour in your favorite monsters from other films and books," he explained, sharing that Alien's Xenomorph, Return of the Jedi's Rancor, and the T-Rex from the original Jurassic Park movie were all influences. "Some Rancor went in there, some H.R. Giger went in there, a little T. rex went in there," Edwards added.
