The casting is spot-on

Yang Lina, who was born in 1972 in Jilin, China, kicked off her documentary career in 1996. Her notable works include Leap of Faith, which competed for the Golden Goblet Award at the 25th Shanghai International Film Festival, and Spring Tide, which was also in the running for the Golden Goblet at the 22nd Shanghai International Film Festival and won Best Director at the Changchun Film Festival.

In her impressive feature film Big World, filmmaker Yang Lina tells the story of a determined young man with a disability and the crucial events happening in his life during one summer. Chunhu, who has cerebral palsy, assists with his grandmother's stage play while also getting ready for a college exam. His grandmother is eager to help him connect with the world, but his mother is constantly worried about him.

The casting is spot-on for this kind of film: Jackson Yee, known for his role in Better Days, takes on the role of Chunhu, Diana Lin from The Farewell plays the grandmother, and Jiang Qinqin from Dwelling by the West Lake portrays the mother. While some may criticize Jackson Yee for playing a character with cerebral palsy, he really nailed it! The film is packed with emotion and has a few surprising twists, though I did feel it could have been about 30 minutes shorter. I bet you will cry... rare are those who didn't.

The fantastic music by Kobayashi Takeshi really enhances the overall experience, and they even managed to weave in a brief love story! I liked it - a lot!

The Most Emotional Rich Film for years

After viewing so many failed Hollywood blockbusters with no emotions, this is movie let me feel the strongest wave of emotions for years!

The actor's performance is world-class, no stunts, no visual effects, the actor spent more than half a year to study the physical movement of a cerebral paralysis patient, even live with some of them for months, then train himself so he can train himself to act like one of them.

There're few long shots focusing the actor in the film, the actor has performed flawlessly in those long shots, he's not acting the role Liu Chunhe, he has became Liu Chunhe in that 130 mins!

After the movie is released, there're many cerebral paralysis patient and their family went on Chinese TikTok, praise the movie accurately capture and presented the pain, challenge and struggle of their daily life, there were no over representation of pain, no over dramatic events, proved by emergency doctors, the actor has precisely presented the challenge of a cerebral paralysis patient.

What's more, after the movie was released, the movie launched a social campaign named "Moss flowers", promoting equal treatment and employment for people with disabilities, what more could you ask from a movie!

Mind blowing act

I have to say it , Jackson did an amazing job. Nailed the character. The movie itself is so good. Not like every other movies with so much things going but just a simple yet wonderful movie with talented cast . The guy deserves so many awards. I might sound crazy but this movie and the role deserves oscar. You would feel the raw emotions in this movie. The movie itself is underrated now but I do hope more people recognise this movie and the talented acts soon.

Jackson's another movie better days is a masterpiece too. Such a talented actor yet very underrated. Hope to see him shine more in the near future.

Beautiful movie , protagonist deserves an oscar.

Movie is brilliantly written and acted, Liu is extraordinary, saw this movie clip as an instagram reel, just his acting made me watch the entire movie, even though I don't understand the language. Talents like him must be recognised internationally. Grandma was very natural loved her too.

Parents are the same weather it's China or India, hahaha. 99% don't support or trust their own kids, be it when they are in school , college or even after marriage.

When our creator has not created our own hands equally, why expect everyone fo be similar.

Loved the movie. I hope more people watch it globally.

With stellar performances, a compelling narrative, and thoughtful direction, the film offers an inspiring and heartfelt cinematic experience that encourages audiences to reflect on the power of determination and familial support.

Film industry should give all awards to jackson yee. I am very heartfelt by your acting, even though i cry in between movie scenes. Thank you actor, co actor, directors, producer, film writer, film narrator, and all workers to show us real world of these lovely people's life. This movie should win oscar.

everything is so perfect

Jackson Yee, salute to you. His marvelous performance has made the movie more engaging. All other characters have played their part as they should have. The storyline is well-written. Direction and cinematography are totally on point. I love that they did not sugercoated anything, which made the movie deserving of an Oscar. The movie represents the actual reality of a clinically chalanged person. Although I think that the background score could have been more engaging. I think their are a lot of moments that any human being will feel related to. This movie represents that one should never lose hope or care about the negativity of society.

What a performance!!! What an actor!!!

Jackson Yee's acting is already excellent enough, his first role in Better Days, although somewhat immature, is full of emotions. Every scene is impressive. But have to admit that the director filmed his acting very well.

But this movie! THIS ONE! The camera lens is kind of slice-of-life style, occasionally beautiful piano notes. He completely dominated every scene, every scene of him is a highlight. Crazy acting, in a realistic and humane movie. He is cute and funny, I love scenes of him with grandmother.

The sudden appearance and departure of the girl he likes, the realistic and cruel selfishness of his parents, I like those details a lot.

Just feel that director/screen could have filled out the story better, but Jackson Yee's acting deserves extra points. I wish him all the highest awards not only Chinese awards but also international awards. This level of acting is really top-notch, no age limit.

Seriously, this movie needs to be promoted internationally, I want to know more about process of making this movie.

Amazing, emotional movie

I haven't watch many chinese movies. But this one made my bawl my eyes out. It was an emotional rollercoaster.

Movies follows a boy who has cerebral palsy and the challenges he faces that "normal ppl" may never even thought to be challenges. Ranging from holding chopsticks, getting a job, dealing with rude strangers, girl relationships, and dealing with family issues.

It really reminded me that everyone should be treated with kindness and respect regardless of who they are or how they look. Everyone is equal. Jackson yee and grandmas performance are phenomenal. This movie definitely needs to win some awards!

Treads a fine line, but successfully

Must be awful to feel and know that you're a burden, that your own parents wish they didn't have you. To be trapped by both your body and the people you have to depend on.

Clearly an awareness campaign type of movie and I resisted it for a while, but it got to me. It got to me big time with a few scenes that were well done. Or maybe just effective, which amounts to very much the same thing.

Jackson Yee does amazing work, there's no trace of the leading man here, he is completely lost in this role and it must be hard work and humbling getting to that level of disability.

I loved some scenes, some I found cliche or manipulative. But then again it's a melodrama so that's the whole point, to make us empathize. I really didn't see the point of the girl and I knew no good would come of it, unless the movie went into some very unrealistic territory. But I guess there's a girl like that in every boy's life. I thought the mom got off too easily and she absolutely had no excuse, not even her own absent mother. The speech at the mayor's office or wherever it was felt a little unnatural and rehearsed, not something he would say on the spot.

I liked the grandma. She's the best grandma anybody could wish for.
