Murderbot

I haven't read the books (don't even think I'd heard of this TV series until a couple of weeks ago) so I'm coming into this completely blind and only taking the show on its own merits. I know book readers will expect something different from those who haven't read the book so if you've read the book I don't know how you'll like it.

The first two episodes that have been released show promise for the series. They were fun. I'm not going to give any spoilers but the concept of a cyborg security unit breaking its programming and wanting to really do nothing but secretly watch TV and hide this from the idiot humans is a fun concept. Alexander Skarsgård is quite fun to coming to terms with his broken programming and his feelings towards humans.

I love the books, read multiple times but unfortunately the series doesn't live up to my reading imagination. Maybe it is the lead. I just imagined Murderbot to be a bigger more commanding presence with a soft centre and a wisecracking humor. I don't even like the sound of his voice or the way he seems uncertain and nervous. The rest of the cast seem silly and make foolish decisions just to create drama. These are supposed to be intelligent people with hearts. Just a bit off for me; a diehard fan of the books. I will continue to watch though but not with the great enthusiasm that I thought I would have.

This is a show with so much potential, suffering from split personality disorder. On the one hand, you have the brilliant Alexander Skarsgard playing the titular character to perfection. His dry inner monologue is just perfect. Every scene he is in he steals. Unfortunately, there are other characters as well. The expedition is peopled with the most boring, unattractive, unappealing characters (and actors) with no redeeming value whatsoever. Whenever the plot centers on the supporting cast, the show grinds to a halt, and we are forced to wait and hope for some danger to arise so we can return to Murderbot. Hopefully, the show will begin to minimize or kill off these characters to allow it to reach it's potential.

The technical execution is impressive, in depicting the habitat and planet in Murderbot.

I was, however, hoping for a more visceral and gritty interpretive depiction of the characters and uniforms and interactions which, to me, seem frivolous and immature.

Murderbot is a dangerous killing machine of immense power and aggression, that forms protective and emotional bonds with humans who, by and large have serious mature relationships with each other and Murderbot, using their reasoning skills as scientists to overcome extreme threats with Murderbot's help.

I get no sense of this quality from the TV series.

Never read the books, heck never even heard of Murderbot. But after watching the first 2 episodes I can say this has potential! Original story with funny dialogue, good acting and a entertaining story.
