Slick-looking but terrible.
25 August 2019 | by Slasher_GuySee all my reviews

Compared to the excellent psychological mind-bender that is the 1990 original, this is an incredibly lousy update. But as a standalone film it is also terrible. Yes, it visually looks good, but I'd take the almost 30 year "oldie version" over this one any day of the week.

Michael Ealy is 100% wrong for the lead role. He's terrible and sleepwalks through a lousy script. Nothing against the actor - I've enjoyed him in other roles - but here he shows virtually no range throughout the entire film and looks more like someone who has had a bad day at the office rather than someone suffering intense psychological trauma. Jesse Williams, on the other hand, is quite good and would have faired better as Jacob.

Worse of all it's boring and a film that barely scrapes the 85 minute mark shouldn't really be taking that kind of liberty. I'd suggest checking out the Tim Robbins original and other excellent films with similar themes (The Machinist, Stay, The Jacket etc.)
