Two puzzling murders share a surprising link that could be the key to finding the perpetrators. Meanwhile, Jane and Casey come to a crossroad; and Maura becomes the caretaker for Patrick Doyle Sr. when he's released from prison.

Jane is on edge over Casey's pending arrival as the team has two murders to solve. The first is that of sociology professor Rhonda Clark who was found dead in her hot tub. She appears to have drowned--after someone failed an attempt to electrocute her. The second death is that of 37-year-old Mark Cabot, a member of an old Boston family who was a ruthless businessman and disliked by virtually everyone who had dealings with him. The problem for the police is that anyone who might have wanted either one dead has a perfect alibi. A dog hair leads them to the solution. Meanwhile, Maura receives a letter from her biological father, Paddy Doyle, asking her to take in his father--her grandfather--who is about to be released after 30 years in prison. And Casey faces a big decision: he's just made Colonel and must decide if he will re-enlist, which he will only do if Jane refuses to marry him.—garykmcd

Mark Cabot is killed in the parking garage of a fitness club. Rhonda Clark is drowned in her hot tub. A German shepherd's hair is found in Rhonda's lungs, believed from the killer's dog, connecting the cases. The team speculates that Mark's sister killed Rhonda and Rhonda's husband and fellow college-sociology professor Rick, who expected the tenure she got, killed Mark as part of a murder pact, but Mark's wife Jenny arrives when a trap is set. Meanwhile, Maura is asked via correspondence from Paddy Doyle to look after his paroled father and fellow mobster Patrick until he has a permanent address. She is curious about her heritage, but Patrick Sr. wants nothing to do with her and believes that Paddy wants him to die as a "nobody", but Jane tells him that Paddy might have wanted his father to see the one good thing his son accomplished: Maura. Casey returns home to tell Jane he has been made a full colonel and he must now decide to stay in the service to become a general, or retire and marry her.—KGF Vissers
