Black History Month: Matthew A. Cherry, Peter Ramsey and the Craft of African American Animators
Back in 2016, Matthew A. Cherry put out a call on Twitter looking for 3D artists to help with a project. On Sunday, Cherry was standing on the stage of the Dolby Theatre celebrating his Oscar win for best animated short for “Hair Love.”

His triumph comes as Variety continues to celebrate African-American artisans who work behind the scenes and continue to make an impact.

“Hair Love” was executive produced by Frank Abney and Peter Ramsey. The latter has been drawing since the age of 3. Ramsey, whose credits as an illustrator include “Godzilla,” “Independence Day” and “Batman Forever,” was a self-taught storyboard artist who dreamed as a young kid in Crenshaw of becoming a director.

Ramsey went on to work at DreamWorks and directed “Rise of the Guardians,” making history as the first African-American to helm an animated film with a $145 million budget. He notched another benchmark in 2019 as the first

‘Onward': First Pixar Film of 2020 Projected for $45 Million Opening

  • The Wrap
After a year unlike any seen in box office history, Disney is ready to get their 2020 slate underway with the first of two original Pixar films set to come out this year. “Onward,” a suburban fantasy starring Tom Holland and Chris Pratt, is predicted to conjure a $45 million opening weekend, according to industry soothsayers.

While Pixar briefly dipped back into new material with the Oscar-winning “Coco” in 2017, it has spent much of the past four years focusing on sequels to its iconic early titles like “Finding Dory,” “Cars 3,” “Incredibles 2,” and “Toy Story 4.” While all well-received, those films have created a thirst for something new from hardcore Pixar fans that new studio creative head Pete Docter is trying to satisfy.

But as one can see from this first round of tracking, that means lower box office expectations. While “Dory”, “Incredibles 2” and “TS4” all scored summer openings of over $100 million,

‘Lamp Life’: How Bo Peep Became a Lost Toy in Pixar’s New Disney+ Short

  • Indiewire
With “Lamp Life,” the new Pixar short currently streaming on Disney+, we get the backstory of how Bo Peep became a proud and heroic Lost Toy in “Toy Story 4.” Turns out there was plenty of deleted footage to utilize by the short’s director, Valerie Lapointe (“Toy Story 4’s” head of story and co-writer), who flipped it on its head.

“I dug up all of the cut scenes that we had [from the flashback], which were sad, and I was trying to look through the lens of how Bo would look back on her life,” said Lapointe, a story artist on the Oscar-winning “Inside Out” and “Brave.” “Her personality would look back and say that she had a hard life, but she came out the other side as a better person, a better toy, she found a new way of life, and she can laugh at it. But in recounting what happened to her,

Watch: Disney+ Celebrates Pixar’s 34th Birthday with New Easter Egg-Filled Video

Back before Disney got into the mix by acquiring Pixar in 2006, the group that began its life as part of Lucasfilm's graphics-driven computer division split into its own corporation on February 3rd, 1986. In the 34 years since then, Pixar has given audiences around the world 21 feature films, with two more on the way this year--Onward on March 6th and Soul on June 19th--and four more untitled pics slated for the early 2020s. Last year's Toy Story 4 is on deck to add up to two more Oscars to the company's 19 …

Super Bowl Movie Ads You’ll See: ‘Fast & Furious 9’, ‘Sonic The Hedgehog’, ‘The Invisible Man’ & More

  • Deadline
The usual studios — Universal, Paramount, Disney, and maybe even Fox — again are aboard to tease their upcoming event pics during Sunday’s Super Bowl. And the notion that the majors have sticker shock over this year’s record $5.6 million 30-second ad spot cost isn’t really stopping them from banging the drum before an estimated 98 million people as the Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers face off in Miami.

In fact, there’s likely to be more movie trailers airing this year versus last, at least 10-plus to Super Bowl Liii’s eight spots. In certain years like 2016, as many as 15 movie trailers aired. Note that Warner Bros. traditionally sits out of the Super Bowl, and Sony occasionally (which we hear is the case again this year). How many movie trailers air during Super Bowl Liv depends on how big Disney wants to go. Last year it had three: Avengers: Endgame,

Director Josh Cooley Dug Through 25 Years Of Audio Recordings To Keep The Late Don Rickles Present & As Funny As Ever In ‘Toy Story 4’
The first-time feature director behind Toy Story 4, Josh Cooley faced a particular kind of challenge when Don Rickles passed away in the middle of production, in April of 2017.

Voicing Mr. Potato Head throughout the franchise, which kicked off in 1995, the legendary actor and stand-up comedian did initially sign on to Toy Story 4—excited to reprise his role. “Hearing stories over the years, I think it’s obvious that being the voice of Mr. Potato Head was something he just loved. When we heard that he passed…you know, he’s part of the family, so it was a hard thing,” Cooley told Deadline, while on the press circuit for the film. “There was never any talk of replacing him with another actor. But we were kind of like, ‘Well, what can we do?’”

Looking to keep Rickles present in the fourth Toy Story film, Cooley was ultimately able to do so,

Natpe Finds Syndication Sector Humming As Drew Barrymore, Nick Cannon Follow Kelly Clarkson, Tamron Hall Into The Arena
The 57th annual Natpe conference — the 10th edition held in Miami — will unfold January 21 to 23 with the syndication business experiencing an upswing.

While ratings are not what they used to be, renewals of major 2019 talk debuts for Kelly Clarkson and Tamron Hall have restored confidence in the sector’s core business model. Newcomers like Drew Barrymore and Nick Cannon are leading a new wave of hopefuls, giving a new shot of energy to Natpe, which some had given up for dead a decade ago. The hangover from expensive wipeouts by Harry Connick Jr., Katie Couric and Arsenio Hall is finally receding.

“After several years of drought, the river is flowing again for syndicators,” Hearst Svp of programming Emerson Coleman told Deadline. “Recently, we would walk the show floor and there wasn’t anything to buy, but this will be a more transactional year at the conference for stations.”

2019 Worldwide Box Office Hits $42.5B Record; Offshore Too With $31B+: Highlights From The International Profit Center & What’s Ahead For 2020 – Global Studio Chart
Refresh for latest…: The theatrical business continued to thrive overseas in 2019, hitting a record $31.1B per comScore’s latest estimates, and an all-time high of $42.5B globally. This is the first time worldwide exceeds $42B and the first the international box office climbs past $30B. The results come in a year when domestic dipped by 4%.

Of the major studios, only Disney saw increases at overseas turnstiles versus 2018 as its mega brands dominated (see chart below). This year is expected to look vastly different, but handwringing can wait. Sure, it would take a lot for the stars to align again the way they did for Disney in 2019, but its 2020 slate of largely fresh IP is also tipped to create some breathing room for other studios to spread out the field. And 2021 looms mightily with potential across the board.

In the year just past, “Some

Every Studio Film Directed by Filmmakers of Color Coming Out in 2020 and 2021
2018 was a watershed moment for diversity in Hollywood. High-profile studio films directed by filmmakers of color made history: Ava DuVernay became the first black woman to direct a film that grossed over $100 million with “A Wrinkle in Time”; “Crazy Rich Asians” was a huge hit, grossing over $238 million worldwide, making it the highest-grossing romantic comedy in a decade; and “Black Panther,” the most expensive Marvel movie led by a black superhero, grossed over $1.3 billion worldwide, shattering the belief that black films don’t sell overseas.

2019, however, yielded less promising results. According to IndieWire’s own research, out of the top 100 movies of 2019, the number directed by filmmakers of color fell from 26 percent in 2018 to 18 percent in 2019. White men still account for over 80 percent of film directors at the studio level, even though they make up only a third of the U.S. population. Of the 1,200 highest-grossing films of the last decade,

Wonder Woman 1984 Tops Fandango's Most Anticipated Movies of 2020 List

  • MovieWeb
2020 is going to be dominated by powerful women at the movies, assuming a new survey is anything to go on. First, we got IMDb's most anticipated movies of 2020, which put Birds of Prey at the top of its list. Now, according to Fandango, Wonder Woman 1984 is the most-anticipated movie coming down the pipeline next year. Both are DC Comics movies with strong female leads, so there shouldn't be too much followed backlash.

In Fandango's list, Wonder Woman 1984 is closely followed by Marvel's Black Widow. Not only are these movies led by female superheroes, but they also happen to be directed by women, which could make 2020 something of a groundbreaking year.

The fact that these two movies topped the list shouldn't be too surprising. Wonder Woman was one of the biggest hits of 2017, and with director Patty Jenkins reuniting with Gal Gadot for an 80s adventure, there's a lot to love.

Female-Led ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ and ‘Black Widow’ Top Fandango Poll of 2020’s Most Anticipated Movies
Four films directed by and led by women — “Wonder Woman 1984,” “Black Widow,” “Eternals” and “Mulan” — were ranked as the most highly anticipated movies of 2020, according to a poll conducted by the ticketing service Fandango.

Fandango surveyed 2,000 millennials who used the site during the final weeks of December for their choices of the movies and performances they’re most looking forward to in 2020. For the first time, the online group of voters selected movies that were all directed by women for the top spots.

Other films on the list included the 25th James Bond film “No Time to Die,” John Krasinski’s “A Quiet Place 2,” Cathy Yan’s “Birds of Prey,” the musical “In the Heights,” Pixar’s animated film “Soul” and “Fast & Furious 9.”

The Most Anticipated Movies of 2020 According to Fandango

Joseph Baxter Dec 27, 2019

Wonder Woman 1984 nabs the top spot in a 2020 Most Anticipated Movies survey, heading a top 4 dominated by female-fronted films.

As Christmas afterglow resonates, the world prepares to wave goodbye to a moviegoing decade dominated at the box office by comic book movies, its adjacent genres and the Disney-driven return of Star Wars. Thus, Fandango’s 2020 Most Anticipated Movies survey is looking ahead toward the launch of a ‘20s decade that, based on what we’re seeing, will be roaring in its own right with a scintillating slate of initial releases.

The ticket seller site polled more than 2,000 millennial film fans during the last weeks of December, yielding a series of results that, while not stupendously surprising, paints an intriguing picture when it comes to the trajectory of the aforementioned genres of movies.

Wonder Woman 1984 is the clear winner of this annual filmgoer survey, topping the “Most Anticipated Movie” category,

Trent Reznor Slams ‘Bird Box’: Scoring Movie Was a ‘F*cking Waste of Time’
It was just one year ago that “Bird Box” was the biggest movie sensation around the world. The Netflix thriller, directed by Emmy winner Susanne Bier and starring Sandra Bullock and Trevante Rhodes, debuted December 14, 2018 on the streaming platform and exploded into the pop culture zeitgeist over the holidays thanks to word of mouth and viral memes. Netflix announced “Bird Box” was streamed by 45 million accounts over its first seven days, a then record for the company. But not everyone who worked on “Bird Box” enjoyed the experience.

In a new interview with Revolver, musician Trent Reznor slams “Bird Box” for the way it handled his original music score. Reznor composed the “Bird Box” score with his frequent collaborator Atticus Ross. The two men won the Best Original Score Oscar for their work on David Fincher’s “The Social Network” and their additional credits include “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo,
