Besides her, the show is alright. I just don't understand what Halo has to do with this annoying person and why the focus on her all the time. Master chief should have never rescued her.

Warning: Spoilers
Halo is a concept and world that I have loved since the first days of the original Xbox. The first time I played Halo: CE I was blown away. The sheer vastness of the Halo ring and a singular character in green armor on the surface against all odds. After that, I played all the following Halo games and even read the novels. It is painfully clear to me that the writers failed to research some of the most basic things about key characters in this series. It wasn't even a good attempt.
One wonders why after so many years when a series about Halo or a movie wasn't made that whomever greenlit this could have failed so miserably at something so rich with lore. As a hardcore fan I actually wished and prayed that it would never be made. I felt in my heart that whomever did it would fail. Well, they did. Only one episode in I can already tell that the rest of the series would only disappoint me further. This feels like something that was made on about 1/4 of the budget that it should have had and 1/4 of the accuracies it should have had.
Where to begin? Well for starters they made the insurrectionists the good guys and the UNSC the bad guys. According to the novels the insurrectionists were at war with the UNSC and did their fair share of killing and terrorizing. That is the reason why the UNSC considered them hostile. That is why the SPARTAN program was conceived in the first place. The UNSC was far from completely innocent but they were the very last hope for humanities survival. The SPARTAN program single-handedly saved human kind from extinction. They clearly want the UNSC to seem like some kind of authoritarian, evil federation bent on irradicating anyone outside of them. This was simply not the case. The UNSC did NOT go out and murder anyone who wasn't "with" them. They only fought back against the insurgents who attacked them.
I also wonder why they spend so much time focusing on this one girl who was part of the insurrection. There were hundreds of thousands of people against the UNSC and once single insurrectionist would be meaningless to them. Especially a young girl with no political power or position. The SPARTANS were tasked with the most dangerous missions and ordered to stamp out the leaders of the terrorist organizations. They were not "murderers" as this series tries to make them out to be. This is so far off of the reality of the Halo world.
The Master Chief's character is all wrong too. He doesn't even have Steve Down's voice. That is an insult to us, the fans. He talks far too much as well. Master Chief also followed orders. He would not have arbitrarily disregarded orders to take out an insurgent. In addition, the UNSC would never order the Chief to kill a teenage girl either. It doesn't make sense. There is zero reason to do this in this situation. The Chief would also never remove his helmet to the audience. It is part of what makes him so unique and serves as character development throughout the storyline. It is also written that the Chief was "disturbingly pale" under his helmet because he left it on so much. They got this wrong as well.
They also changed a couple of the main characters races. I do not understand this concept. Why do it? For diversity? Well it doesn't work. Fans want it to be true to the lore. The admiral in this situation is also wrong. There is no way Parangosky would have ordered that they "take out" the Chief under any circumstances. As a member of ONI she understood the importance of the SPARTANs, in no small order, the Chief's as well. Starting out this series where the Chief goes AWOL after touching one piece of Forerunner technology is just strange. The whole beginning of this series starts out in a bizarre way and not close to the lore of the original world. I cannot see this series making up for the vast inconsistencies and inaccuracies it has displayed so far. I am deeply disappointed in it.

Knowing this was never going to follow the books or the games, I gave this a shot and it's a bore. After episode 7 I'm confident in saying this is screwed up. Only action is a couple of episodes while the rest are overlong dialogue and annoying backstory of Master Chief.
The worst thing other than the constant removal of Spartan helmets is the new character Kwon! Oh my lord is she annoying and horribly written. Who the hell thought this was not only a good idea but green lit the dialogue?
The cgi is okay to crap and when there is action it's okay. They also planted a human with the aliens which seems even cheaper. The backstabbing from the unsc is really annoying and makes me happy that halo 1 didn't have all this crap. Honestly, this is such a joke. I loved most of the games and knew we'd never get a reused story but this is just a F you.

When you approach an intellectual property that you clearly do not respect or understand, there can be no good outcome.
In this case, the intent was obviously to exploit a beloved gaming franchise to push an agenda and make a profit.
Unfortunately, in their haste to use the Halo universe for their own purposes, the makers of this show did not bother to stop and reflect on the elements which originally made it successful.
Instead, they hollowed out the core concepts of the game until all that was left was an aesthetic shell, which they then filled up with their own ideology.
Beyond the lack of respect for the source material, this show also suffers from inept dialogue, abysmal character development, and emaciated plot development.
While this criticism may seem harsh, the series truly is an abject failure right out of the gate.
What is truly sad is that this did not have to be a disaster.
Forward Unto Dawn stands as a testament to the fact that Halo can be translated into an engaging story with flesh and blood actors.
Alas, in this instance a game with a devoted following and enormous potential was desecrated by outsiders who merely wanted to use an existing fanbase for their own purposes.

There is the clear trend in tv now to dump every possible plot element and random character in the pilot of a series in the hopes of appealing to every possible viewer. Then spend however many episodes they can squeeze on on stupid love story drama never giving closure to 90% of what they introduced in the pilot. Is this show going to be like that? Yes, the indicators are there that it will be.
I wanted to like this. The cast voices are spot on, choreography of the scenes is not bad, the fighting physics look real.. Those things are not bad. They put some thought into that aspect. But then they had to bury it all with every possible cliche and seen it done it blah blah blah generic stupid plot.
Lets run down the cliche list from just 1 episode:
rebels on some forsaken outpost.
Orphan.
Orphan is a girl. Extra points for that.
Evil government/empire.
Weird aliens mysterious human overlord of the enslaved alien species some mysterious object magical object suddenly binds with 1 character magical object does magical things magically at the convenient time 2 or 3 females in high positions having a sissy fit at each other over who is lead tough girl the high command is basically a literal family. Oh cheesy family drama foreshadow!
Mad scientist secret yet not secret pet science projects malfunctioning science project flashbacks to some cheesy family moment teens doing drugs and getting vaporized for it... im rebelling against mom. She is keeping me down!
Dad tells me secret info and i completely act like i should not have access even to the passcode for the fridge!
Mean killing machine decides to disobey orders. Just because we have no idea how to ease his returning humanity into the plot the whole universe now wants said magical object. Ooh foreshadowing
And that list is not exhaustive. Yep. As bad as it sounds. 20 years ago we complained that LOST jammed so much plot into the first season they cannot unwind it? Well, HALO did that in 1 episode. Cool. And you know exactly what the show will be from that one episode. And its not a good thing to know because it's nothing unique or interesting.
Enjoy watching space marines mutinying on the orders of mad scientist while evil government official and evil alien empress try to beat them to the magic object, while some teen girls (who aren't teen at all) are complaining about how many hugs they got from their parents in the midst of all that.
Priorities. Gotta have them in television in 2022...

For any halo fans.. I only need to say two things..
Covenant hate humans and want to exterminate them except one random bimbo blonde who is on their team and no its not Halsey.
Chief shows his face forgetting its not Mandalorian.

It's poor outside of the action
borismk-3894226 March 2022
I could compare this to the games, and on those grounds it would do terribly, but I think I'd rather explain why it's trash on it's own merits.
The Good: the action was top tier, thoroughly enjoyed it and that's what gets it two stars.
The Bad: everything else, the story is contrived and cheap, Master Chief loses his mystique the moment he takes his helmet off and even before then he's just a poorly copy and pasted archetype.
The female lead is mostly just annoyingly preachy and almost everyone we meet seems like a cheap caricature.
In closing, I'll watch another episode or two, but I already know this show will be generic at best, irritating at worst.

Bad story writing ignorant of the lore and deeply flawed
rataserf25 March 2022
Halo Lore was rich with excellent novels, games, comics and fan fiction. All of them excluding the Halo 6 had a much better story line and less annoying sidekicks. Halo 6/halo Infinite was a warning of what was going to happen to the Halo franchise with algorithmic story writing, but atleast the game play was good. Halo 2022 is what happens when good sci-fi story writing gets replaced by algorithmic garbage spewed by interns. I am pretty sure it is not getting any cheaper to produce these episodes. Please realize that 1 high quality writer > 300 strong internship assignments from non science fields spewed together by an algorithm.
It is ok to be diverse and aware of the political climate when casting for these series and movies, just don't murder the lore, the story, sci-fi and the lack of basic military tactics. Please look up the expanse, it had a diverse cast and does need to make up pointless story arcs. The writers of the Expanse series mostly stuck to the source story, the science and worked with a much lesser budget. Pretty sure there is a dumb company behind all these movies and series applying their brand of AI algorithm trained on market research with flawed data (probably twitter and facebook) to spew this garbage. No wonder do they keep isolating their core audience with these design decisions.
Also why does everything need to have a teenage messiah who has to figure out their emotions in the middle of a crisis? You are sacrificing millions of viewers to pander to an audience that is fine with roblox and minecraft. Maybe Minecraft halo would be your next intended target ? If it is for a younger audience, why do you add in so much gore ?
That said, the Gore, costumes, 3d design, some effects were very well done.
The first episode could have been done in 25 minutes or less cutting the filler and doubling their budget for some high quality scenes.
My gripes with Episode 1, Spoilers ahead:
The insurgents were brilliant tacticians after surviving decades of fighting against UNSC. Yet they lack basic tactics, no scouts, their weapons are ineffective against covenant (why ?, The Spartans use the same weapons including the chain guns). Even though they were dug in for decades, all they had was a wall, Maybe sets were too expensive? The insurgents use the common star wars trademark tactics of bunching up, throwing hundreds into meat grinders, shooting randomly and rushing the enemy. You don't need hundreds of extras in single shots just a dozen thrown into bulldozer dug trenches to get a better cheaper realistic battle scene that conveys their sense of panic. It is ok for others to kill the covenant.
Why is it not reasonable not to expect everyone to speak a common language, this is a time far into the future (2531)? Humanity has intertwined and mingled so much explaining your diverse cast, why cannot they all have the same language? Languages will bound to die after people mix. It is nice for "some" tv/movies set in the current time line to have multiple languages, but it breaks immersion in other contexts. For the angry mob, next time please ask yourself what effort did you put in to save some dying 3rd world country language?
Humans in covenant ? Seriously ? Prophets would never take in Humans and put them beside the relics due to their forerunner origins.
Where is the wide spread usage of AI ? Where is Cortana or jr Cortana or whoever ?
Where were the other species, grunts, jackals , brutes, worms etc ? It is called the "covenant" not just elites, Prophets and humans.

I wanted epic war with aliens, instead Master Chief is going to babysit some rebel teen.
I heard these companies don't give a .... about the source material, but I did not expect that basically just change some names and costumes and they copied the Mandalorian!

I am currently halfway through the first episode and the chick, Kwan, what a seriously unlikeable character. Also, macguffin, probably the girl is going to be the key to ending the war or something... Not a good start.
100 Million for 2005 CGI?

-The characters have no weight to there movement. Its what made Black Panther look bad in fight scenes.
-CGI looks like something from the early 2000s at times.
-Woke again as always. This coming from a minority in the US whos tired of this shi.
-It has nothing to do with Halo.

Another 1-hit wonder show that turns into a soap opera after the pilot
nonessentialpersonnel7 May 2022
Starts off great as you would expect of a tv series based off a video game that is mostly about shooting aliens. I mean it! You will love the pilot and you will be hooked, but then in the following episodes, the soap opera will begin and fill the script with mostly meaningless conversations. First episode is what you'd expect on a show based on a game that's specifically about aliens, plasma guns, shields and swords, sniper riffles, massive space ships and enhanced super-humans in force field enhanced battle armor, instead, we get 5 to 10 minutes of good action every 3 episodes, with which they use to mask this yet-another soap opera as a live action HALO tv show and their lack of imagination and creativity. This is why I will never subscribe to these stupid streaming services. Paramount takes the L with this one.

Why is it that Sonic movies are closer to the source material than everything else. On paper. Halo writes itself. Watched the first episode. Not bad. If it were something new. But. The Halo universe already has a tone of stories and lore. Why do these producers insist on putting these shows as their personal political playground. I want to be entertained not preached to. Master Chief isn't the main character in his own show. I feel they're will kill him off. Event though I already knew the writers admitted to not following the game. They didn't even play it. I still wanted to like it. I just can't. He took his helmet off. Unless you are making a parody show. That should never happen. Anyway. Not watching anymore. I'm sure some people will like it. I don't. And I really tried.
Ouch
artabuneta24 March 2022
Very badly acted, painful to watch. Inane dialogue, ridiculous plot, cheap, derivative fx (reference to Predator). Cast of characters reminds one of a budget copy of The Expanse. All 'rebels' spout the same crappy haircut seen elsewhere, recently in Raised by Wolves.
This could've been great but instead it's barely mediocre
DeadMansTrousers25 March 2022
All the reviews for this show that are giving it high ratings are people who admit to never having played the games. Anyone who played the games like myself will be disappointed with this series and it's not even because they have Master Chief take his helmet off (which is a huge issue) but it's because they didn't do the source material justice. Which is shocking since Halo is an insanely popular, long running series spanning 16 games. It would've been so easy to make a proper live action show or film from the games without having choppy CGI, over using of first person camera, bad acting, etc. This looks like a cheap fan made production and it's so disappointing that they couldn't put more effort into it.
If you can get beyond any differences it has with the game you love, this is an exciting, cool Sci-Fi show!!! :-)
stevebondi24 March 2022
I have now seen all the video game cinematics/cutscenes from the 8+ games, all the shorts, and all the D2V movies. And although I have not played the game and am not a gamer, I can appreciate the sci-fi lore and the main characters in as much detail as the games have presented. However, I find that 3 episodes into this prequel series it is already providing more nuance and character detail to the mostly stoic hero in the games. For the most part, I have still pretty much been able to treat this as a stand-alone Sci-Fi series, and I thoroughly enjoyed the awesome action, great visuals, and the developing story! :-)
Bland
draculard25 March 2022
The tale of john mister chef and how bland his cooking and his show is, he slowly boils the flavour out of beef, while his show slowly boils the interesting aspects out of any of the sci-fi tropes that were shoved hodge podge into this thing at it's inception.
For a soothing nap turn the volume down on your tv, lie down on your couch, and get ready to have your brains slowly leak out your ears. 99/10 best television based sleeping pill ever created.

I never played the games but this show is atrocity. The CGI is terrible, the acting is fair at best (props to the actors for doing their best with a horrible script).
I'm literally watching this to see how bad it can get.
I give it 3/10 because there are parts that are good but after 6 episodes I'm pretty much here for the failure. It's a car crash you can't look away from.

So whats the problem?
boggie475826 March 2022
I understand I am a lay person and jumping into the Halo story cold so I am viewing this show with different eyes then some on here. I really didn't understand what the problem was. I know nothing about Halo or the story behind it making me not a Halo gamer or purest. I didn't know who the Spartans were or the military UNC. I don't know who the insurgents are and nothing about the covenant...so this first episode didn't really explain who these people are but for me it was pretty easy to follow and just seeing what was transpiring with all of these characters I somewhat understood it. I am sure I will understand more with more episodes but for now I thought it was really good. How it looks and the graphics looked good to me. I enjoyed it...hey I didn't know anything about The Mandalorian or Boba Fet because I really didn't like Star Wars and ended up loving these two series and with each episode I came to understand who these character were. I think it will be the same with Halo. I refuse to bash this series after just one episode. I usually wait until the 4th episode before I review a series but this first one in my opinion was good and peaked my interest. My opinion is totally different than the people who play Halo or read about it. Frankly I am glad I don't know any of those things so I can give this series a fair review and try to enjoy what I am watching.
This is my review after the 6th episode. Like I said with the previous review I still like this series. I still don't get all the hate but I am enjoying it anyway. Now I know who John is and and know how the Spartans came about. I still feel this is a 8 and this series is well worth the watch..

redn_path0124 March 2022
This is best viewed by an audience that neither knows or likes scifi, nor has ever seen or played the games.
Fans of the halo universe needn't bother with this stuff, best read a well written fanfic instead, virtually everything would have a higher quality writing than this.

Halo Proves Itself -- People Please Give This a Second Chance
truthbrarian29 April 2022
Episode 5, PROVES that Halo can do high budget, high budget sci-fi war movie action, contrary to popular belief. Its a much much better scene then what we got in Episode 1, possibly where most people gave up watching. It feels very HALO. Episode 6, PROVES Halo can do intelligent, high drama sci-fi in a way that is matching the games or exceeding the games.
Neither of these episodes features the loathed Kwan storyline. At the arc that Halo is doing I am telling you, kicking and screaming, if you abandon this show at this point its at least as bad a crime as cancelling Firefly but maybe worse since the committed budget has to be 10 times for Halo that of Firefly. We have gone from 6/10 E1: 2/10 E2: to 9/10 E5 and 8/10 E6, these writers are beginning to find their groove and giving me hope for 10/10's to come.
Paramount+ has a lot of dreck but they need to be at least lauded for trying to invest so much in order to create the 21st century version of Sci-Fi Channel.

Pure fun, best sci fi since Expanse and Mandalorian

I am someone who only played first Halo, so I don't know the full lore of the universe, so it makes this show quite exciting to watch... Is the CGI good for a tv show ? It's decent... Is Master Chief present ? Yes...
Is action enjoyable? It is... Is the story exciting? Absolutely... Does the show have Starship troopers/Aliens/Rogue One militaristic undertones? It does...
I don't understand people giving below 7, might be either die hard fans missing certain lore in advance or certain fanservice or might be people generally not into sci fi... Personally for me there were too many sci fi shows which were plain bad in recent years, just look at what happened to Star Trek franchise, ST Discovery and Picard are plain unwatchable, but Halo offered a decent drive from the first episode, hope it gets better afterwards...
