After dealing with the ones attacking them, Jack and Kate continue to find the override device. They find where it was and while there Jack discovers that Cheng Zi is the one who has it. He then calls the President who informs Jack of what happened; that one of their subs attack a Chinese vessel. So it seems like Cheng is trying to get the U.S. and China into a conflict. Jack wonders how the men who attacked him, whom they learn are Russians, found him and he learns it was Boudreau. He goes to confront him who admits that he tried to turn Jack over to the Russians. They learn that Cheng is working for the Russians who wants the conflict to occur. So he decides to use Mark to help him find Cheng. In the meantime the Presidnet tries to convince the Chinese that the attack was not their doing. But they don't believe him and are making a move.
Did You Know?
The time-line of the submarine attack is off. A submarine at operating depth can only receive ELF (extremely low frequency) radio messages. Due to ELF'S limited bandwidth, information can only be transmitted very slowly this way, on the order of a few characters per minute. The sub would therefore only get a pre-arranged code of a few letters, instructing it to rise to a shallower depth where they can receive the actual message by a quicker means. Surfacing in itself is not a task accomplished quickly by modern subs as they are optimized to stay submerged for most of the patrol. Also, it always causes hull expansion noise which the Chinese carrier group could detect. To avoid that, the sub would first have to move out of range, then afterwards dive again and re-acquire the carrier at torpedo range. All of this can not be accomplished in a few minutes, it would take at least an hour or more. See more
The only reason I surfaced today was to try and protect your father. For you, also because I think he's a really good man. But things have gotten complicated; some things are gonna happen, and I just don't want you to hate me forever.
Jack, stop. I could never hate you. I never have.
