In The Perfect Summer, fatherless teenager Jake (Adam Horner) is happy living in Chicago, until his mother (Sydney Penny) decides to uproot them to a small surfing town where her estranged father (Eric Roberts), Jake's grandfather, lives. The transition isn't easy for anyone and it seems everywhere he goes, Jake manages to make enemies, including the town bully, Tyler (JD Banks), who doesn't like the new interloper or his interest in young surfing prodigy, Kayla (Katie Garfield). Stuck in the beach town with no friends and no knowledge of surfing, Jake has nowhere to turn until Cody (Jason Castro), the local surf shop owner, reveals that Jake's grandfather is a surf legend. Tired of feeling like an outcast, Jake asks Lou to teach him about surfing. Jake learns to face his fears, push through inhibitions and realizes that winning the respect of his new peers - and Katie's heart - might mean facing the biggest challenge of his life. Did You Know?

Adam Horner was apparently hard to work with on set. It was told that at times he refused to put on an American accent because he found it difficult, refusal to learn lines and instead wanted to have cue cards to read off, and was often late or didn't show up at all to set. See more »

Decent family film
23 February 2015 | by MattyGibbsSee all my reviews

A teenager moves to the coast with his mom, to live with his grandad following the death of his father. He struggles to fit in until his ex surfboard champion grandad teaches him to surf.

It's a straightforward story and one that's been done a million times before however I found it quite entertaining if a little predictable. There is a strong performances from Eric Roberts as the grandad and he steals most of the scenes he is in. Sydney Penny as his mom offers good support but unfortunately the lead actor Adam Horner is a bit wooden.

I must admit I know zip about surfing so I don't know how realistic the surfing scenes were but I'm guessing not very. This is really a film about fitting in and overcoming your fears more than surfing though so I guess that point doesn't really matter.

This is a safe and watchable family film that's probably worth a 6.5 but as it provided a nice distraction from the cold dull English winter I'll give it a 7.
