This short film was made as part of a competition to pitch a short that would then form the basis for a webseries. In this film we join José Manuel Espencer, a 33-year old Spanish man who is living abroad (Hungary or Czech Republic, it is hard to be sure) to study historical mathematics. He shows us around his new home and he explains the challenges and appeal of the place, being a Spaniard far from home, far from his language and far from his sun.
Being fair to the short film, this is a competition entry and it does feel like one for the most part since it is an amateur effort. I have no idea if it is based on reality or not, but it is not a documentary since José is a character and not a person (he is played by writer/director Gonzalo Gurrea Ysasi). Regardless of what it is, it does have a nice flowing travelogue feel to it and I liked the humor of the foreigner abroad – I travel quite a lot for work so I know all too well the random selection of food in restaurants, and getting lost while walking around strange places where the street names barely stay in my mind long enough to look down and find them on a map!
The fast style of this film is where the energy comes from – of course it also fits the speed of the Spanish dialogue. The filming is rough and ready but suits the material – although a little bit more stability would have been good. The dialogue and energy is what makes it work though. It is not perfect but it has a certain spark to it that makes it decent entertainment.
