Trivia

After director Francis Lawrence boarded the project, he worked hand-in-hand with screenwriter Justin Haythe. "There wasn't a rushed development process on this film," producer David Ready said. "It was a finely tuned process. Francis knew that this was going to be his next film and he wanted the screenplay to reflect his exact vision on the page. It was one of those experiences where you get to bring to fruition what you want to shoot." Director Lawrence added: "I'd worked with Justin before. And he shared my vision for the movie. Sometimes, stories don't come together, and translations of books to screenplay don't always work as easily as one might think but this one kind of coalesced. Justin and I worked quite hard at it and spent a lot of hours in rooms together over the six months or so that it took to create the draft but there wasn't much struggle. It just kind of seemed to work and to come together nicely." See more »

Goofs

The floppy discs used by the agents may seem cumbersome and obsolete. However, in real life, as of 2018, police and military do still use floppy disk to store classify documents. Since its impossible to hack or clone a floppy without having the physical disk in hand. let alone they need a floppy drive to even read it. So its technically accurate they would go through the trouble and uses like 8 floppies for security. See more »

Alternate Versions

At the distributor's request, the UK version (both in cinemas and on video) is cut for "strong sadistic violence" to earn a 15 certificate instead of an 18. As both countries make up the same distribution region, Ireland also received the same cut version (rated 16 for cinema and 18 on video). The contentious scene shows Ustinov being strangled:
  • In the UK version, we only see a brief establishing shot where his hands are covering his throat, cutting right to a close-up of Dominika struggling but completely clean. The censored footage shows the wire cutting into Ustinov's throat for much longer, in more graphic detail after his arms hang loose, and him bleeding on Dominika's chest.
  • Ustinov collapsing uses an alternate shot in the UK version, and the second close-up of Dominika is digitally bloodless as with the first, but there's still blood on her chest when putting on her clothes as per the uncut version (a continuity error).
The uncut version is roughly 13 seconds longer. See more »

Finally An Intriguing And Original Film
29 July 2018 | by nby-83430See all my reviews

It seems to me that Hollywood has been pushing out endless childish sequels with poor actors recently.

Red Sparrow is none of those things. It shows a topical issue, gives its viewers lots of action and heart pounding moments. The actors are impressively good and take chances and push boundaries.

I am impressed that films like this still exist.
