The only female US pro in Jai Alai, an ancient Basque sport and rising star in the American sports-gambling industry, is beaten to death in the locker-room of former star Meltzer's daughter Corinne's club, which needs its team to keep its gambling license. Jim's team finds a tangled web of rivalry, dangerous romance and financial interests. Meanwhile Jim's mother Joan also arrives and worries his father Michael with plans to buy property in the Glades, giving the divorce momentum a new direction.
