Richard Schickel, Influential Time Magazine Film Critic, Dies at 84
Richard Schickel, the longtime film critic for Time magazine who also wrote 37 books, mostly on film, and directed a number of documentaries on film subjects, died on Saturday in Los Angeles of complications from a series of strokes, his family told the Los Angeles Times. He was 84.

“He was one of the fathers of American film criticism,” his daughter, writer Erika Schickel, told the Times. “He had a singular voice. When he wrote or spoke, he had an old-fashioned way of turning a phrase. He was blunt and succinct both on the page and in life.”

He wrote and/or directed more than 30 documentaries, mostly for television.

Schickel shared a 1977 Emmy nomination for the documentary “Life Goes to the Movies” and received two nominations in 1987 for the documentary “Minnelli on Minnelli: Liza Remembers Vincente,” which he directed.

Schickel wrote film reviews for Life magazine from 1965 until the magazine folded in

Blu-ray Review: ‘Clint Eastwood: 20 Film Collection’ Highlights Legendary Career

Chicago – “Clint Eastwood: 20 Film Collection” is a great Father’s Day gift that’s nonetheless a bit difficult to describe. It’s not exactly a greatest hits collection of its legendary star since it’s missing some of his most iconic films and includes some of his most notable failures. At the same time, every Eastwood fan would be happy to have at least half of these films in their collection and there’s no better way to do it then this set. It also may allow for some reevaluation and reappreciation of some of Eastwood’s less-beloved movies. I wish that Warner Bros. had taken the opportunity to upgrade a few Eastwood films that still need HD restoration but there’s enough brilliance in this box that it’s tough to complain.

Rating: 4.0/5.0

Which ones are the classics in this impressively-packaged set? There are undeniable, iconic ones like “Dirty Harry,

Clint Eastwood 20 Film Collection Blu-Ray Review

In celebration of their 90th Anniversary, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment released the Clint Eastwood 20 Film Collection on Blu-Ray this week. Included here are, as the title says, 20 of the legend’s films as well as two excellent documentaries: Eastwood Factor and Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story. Additionally, the set also comes with a nice little hardcover book that looks at the filmmaker’s illustrious career.

With five Academy Awards under his belt and over $2 billion at the domestic box office, the man is no doubt a legend and with this new Blu-Ray box set, there’s no better time than now to celebrate Clint Eastwood and the impact that he has had on the film world.

Though not the greatest selection, here are the 20 films that you’ll receive. Now, remember, this is a Warner Bros. release, meaning it was released to honour the actor/director’s relationship with the studio.

Clint Eastwood's ultimate optimism: to make films at 105
Los Angeles, April 29: At 82, actor-filmmaker Clint Eastwood, who rose to fame with TV series "Rawhide" and later won the best director Oscar for his movie "Unforgiven", dreams of making films for two more decades.

At the Tribeca Film Festival, he said that he admires the 104-year-old Portugese filmmaker Manoel de Oliveira.

Calling the thought as "the ultimate optimism", he said: "It would be great to be 105 and still making films."

The "Million Dollar Baby" director joined filmmaker Darren Aronofsky for a conversation at the film festival following the screening of documentary "Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story".

Tribeca: Eastwood and Aronofsky Talk First Takes and Failing on Your Own Terms at World Premiere of 'Eastwood Directs' (Video)

Tribeca: Eastwood and Aronofsky Talk First Takes and Failing on Your Own Terms at World Premiere of 'Eastwood Directs' (Video)
In a scene from 1995's "The Bridges of Madison County," Meryl Streep's farmwife gazes over one of the bridges as Clint Eastwood, playing a lanky photographer passing through, catches her off guard with a candid snapshot. He's delighted that he has captured her in a natural moment. One of many sequences highlighted in "Eastwood Directs: The Untold Story," it underscores what the director is always chasing. In the Tribeca Talk Saturday following the world premiere of "Eastwood Directs," the 82-year-old director/star told younger director Darren Aronofsky ("Black Swan") that he learned a key trick from directing children: "It's best if you get them when they don't know they're being filmed." "Eastwood Directs," directed by friendly critic/documentarian Richard Schickel, almost panders with careful reverence. In the film a wide range of actors, directors, and producers attest to Eastwood's gifts—especially his ability to direct actors. Not surprising for a man with a full-fledged.
