Unlikeable Megan again
xbatgirl-300294 October 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This episode is probably in my bottom 5 episodes from the whole series, mostly because of how horrible Megan is again - same as the contagious disease episode where Luke Perry showed up. Her character always had to do such a delicate balancing act between being grouchy yet sympathetic and being really hard to watch and unprofessional. I guess it was almost inevitable there would be a couple stinkers. There's nothing believable about who she in this episode also being able to be a top doctor with a prestigious job.

I don't know if it was super obvious to everyone that Darby was guilty pretty much right away or that I have a lot of experience dealing with the severely mentally ill as a nurse, but I was rolling my eyes at how gullible Megan was. Firstly, all detective shows seem to have episodes where a parent covers for their teen's guilt. Darby also behaved like a pretty classic Borderline sociopath, relatively speaking. For Megan to just believe her so quickly, made her look untrained and inexperienced. I know the writing said Megan saw herself in Darby but it never rang true for me, at least not enough for her to be so over the top unhinged.

I do give them credit for not having the most famous guest star be the guilty party, as is the cliché. I hated how the script had Craig Bierko's character acting so extremely oppositional and obstructive just to create a red herring. It's not how a Medical Director would have realistically acted, even the incompetent ones. But likable Bierko did a great job being creepy and menacing as ordered. Also loved getting a brief scene with the girl from AP Bio who said she killed Kennedy. She's such a good comic actor!

The show has really lost all its steam at this point and really deserved to be cancelled. The overall writing is so poor with no basis in reality anymore between how unprofessional many characters are, conflicts of interest, unrealistic job descriptions. The subplot with Megan investigating her father's death seems desperate. BTW why in the world would she go to Luke Perry's infectious disease doctor character to get her dad exhumed? It all makes no sense beyond trying to keep him around as a potential love interest. The will-they-or-won't-they with Tommy is not sexy. It's tiresome at this point. It's like, fine, just don't date and get on with your lives already.

It's a shame the show never had good enough writing to begin with, then it really went off the rails with the retooling in season 3. This episode totally highlighted all it's weaknesses and it sadly needed to end.

Committed ***1/2 Even Dr. Hunt Can Be Wrong on Occasion
edwagreen25 April 2013
Warning: Spoilers
Unbelievable! Dr. Hunt was completely wrong in determining the killer of a 5 year old child. With all signs pointing to the mother and therapist, Dr. Hunt went along what appeared to be the obvious. As is the case in many of these mystery shows, the obvious always doesn't play out to be true.

Geri Ryan, who is fast becoming superfluous on this show, doesn't even appear in this episode.

Anyone can fall for the actions of a teenager with emotional problems. They can wrench anything out of you. By the way, where was the father in this episode? He was quite conspicuous by his absence.
