Howl's Moving Castle is a film animated by Studio Ghibli. It features stunning visuals as well as an engaging, imaginative story. Although set in a fantasy world full of magic, many viewers can relate to the main lead, Sophie, who slowly learns to be brave and love herself.
She sets out on a journey to break her curse, helping others along the way. Although this film was very enjoyable, it has many confusing elements that no amount of magic can explain away. These flaws include some of the movie's visuals, settings, and even the way the characters are used. While these parts of the film are confusing, they still don't stop Howl's Moving Castle from being one of Studio Ghibli's most iconic films.

This weeks 20 Questions on Deadline guest is Dan Stevens. Of course we all remember his first major foray onto our screens as Matthew Crawley in Downton Abbey, and the untimely death of his character that had fans raging for his return.
But Hollywood called, and since then, Stevens has accrued a long list of credits, including Beauty and the Beast, I’m Your Man, Love, Death and Robots, Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities and Welcome to Chippendales. Recently he voiced a character in the Oscar-winning The Boy and the Heron, and next up, his new film Godzilla x Kong: the New Empire will be in theaters March 29th.
In this episode, Stevens digs into his reasons for needing a Taylor Swift collab, why Elvis is top of his list of dream roles, and how shooting Godzilla x Kong in Australia came with plenty of real-live snakes and killer trees.

Rajskub played Chloe O’Brian on the long-running 24 drama and also starred in the comedy Night School with Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish and Mayfield Games with Mira Sorvino. Ryan is a veteran of New Zealand soaps and series like Mary Kills People and Beauty and the Beast.
Other new cast members for North of North include Maika Harper, Braeden Clarke, Kelly William, Zorga Qaunaq, Doreen Simmonds and Tanya Tagaq. They join the previously-announced lead Anna Lambe, who plays young Inuk mother Siaja, with Keira Cooper, a 7 year-old actress from Iqaluit, Nunavut, playing her daughter Bun.
Siaja wants to build a new future for herself, not easily done in her small Arctic town where everyone knows your business, according to a synopsis for North of North from the producers.

"Noah" continued Emma Watson's poor Rotten Tomatoes streak since it has a 41 percent Audience Score on the website. The 2014 epic biblical drama received mixed reviews; critics praised it, but audiences disagreed. Watson redeemed herself in 2019 with "Little Women," earning critical acclaim and fantastic Rotten Tomatoes scores.
Noah was surely one of the downsides of Emma Watson's career, especially because it continued a poor Rotten Tomatoes streak for the actress that wouldn't be broken until 2019. The 2014 epic biblical drama film was directed by Darren Aronofsky and written by Aronofsky and Ari Handel, and the movie chronicled the biblical story of Noah's Ark from the Book of Genesis and the Book of Enoch. Watson starred as Ila in the cast of Noah. Ila was an orphan whom Noah and Naameh, played by Russell Crowe and Jennifer Connelly, took in and raised as their own in the movie.

Before the 2001 film year, it had always been a subject of debate in years prior as to whether the Academy Awards should create a category for animated features. That finally came to fruition with an uptick in the amount of animated movies that were released annually. Prior to the category being established, several animated films would occasionally win special prizes. Such films included “Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs” in 1937 (for which Walt Disney received a normal-sized Oscar and seven miniature ones), “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” in 1988 and “Toy Story” in 1995. “Beauty and the Beast” also managed a major feat in 1991 when it became the first animated film to be nominated for Best Picture, eventually losing to “The Silence of Lambs.” Tour our photo gallery below to see every Oscar winner for Best Animated Feature, from “Shrek” to the most recent. You’d think that the titular monster from 1932’s The Mummy would be the one to have been based on the Academy Award statue for its slender physique, but it’s actually a much more scaly and grotesque beastie that took this honor. Turning 70 a few weeks ago, Jack Arnold’s Creature from the Black Lagoon has cemented itself within popular culture as a powerful riff on Beauty and the Beast for those who like their romance both tragic and submersible. But what many might not know is that the creature itself was modeled after one of the most prestigious awards that the entertainment industry has to offer. But just how did this unlikely source of inspiration make its way onto the creative team’s laps, and how did it influence his overall reception in becoming one of the most iconic monsters to ever grace the silver screen?...

Disney has put the live-action remake of 'The Sword in the Stone' on hold. The 1963 animation had been expected to follow the likes of 'Cinderella', 'Beauty and the Beast' and 'The Lion King' in being turned into a live-action blockbuster by the media corporation but now, according to 'Damsel' director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo, the project has been put on the back burner for now. He told Collider: "I was attached a long time ago, and I prepped a lot for Disney for that movie. I don’t know exactly what happened, but the studio decided to hold the project. "So right now it’s in a holding situation, and I don’t know what’s going to happen, to be honest. But I think it’s a great story. "I would be so keen to make it if they decided to greenlight the project.

"A Tale as Old as Time." sings Mrs. Potts (Angela Lansbury) in the titular song from 1991's Beauty and the Beast, although it may be more true of another Disney classic: Cinderella. The first recorded story in the Cinderella vein harks back to Greece in the sixth century Bce, in which an eagle steals the shoe of a Greek courtesan named Rhodopis, flies it across the Mediterranean, and smack into the lap of an Egyptian king. Since then, the Cinderella story has been told and retold countless times. The name 'Cinderella' alone has been used as an adjective, most often to describe sports teams that come out of nowhere to win championships. There's no contest, though, when it comes to adaptations: Disney is tops. Ever since it came out in 1950, no Cinderella adaptation has been Cinderella enough to knock it off the top of the heap, but it...

Sarah Polley is no longer attached to direct the live-action remake of “Bambi” for Disney, IndieWire has learned. The remake of Disney’s 1942 animated classic is still in development at the studio, even after the recent exit of live-action film head Sean Bailey. An individual with knowledge of Polley’s exit said there’s no drama in the split but simply said things didn’t work out.
TheWrap first broke the news in an analysis of Bailey’s exit. Bailey, in his 15-year tenure at Walt Disney Studios, had pioneered and greenlit virtually all of Disney’s streak of live-action remakes of animated classics, some mega hits like “The Lion King,” “Aladdin,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” and some like the recent “The Little Mermaid,” “Haunted Mansion,” and others that underwhelmed at the box office. Some of Bailey’s lingering projects include live-action takes on “Moana,” “Lilo & Stitch,” and “Mufasa: The Lion King.

Nibbler the Nibblonian first appeared on "Futurama" in the episode "Love's Labours Lost in Space", wherein Leela (Katey Sagal) assumed he was a poor, lost animal that merely needed a home. She put an adorable red cape on him and outfitted him with a diaper. Nibbler had a voracious appetite and could consume many, many, many times his own body weight in pork products in a single day. Nibbler would then poop out perfectly round spheres of solidified dark matter that, quite conveniently, could serve as starship fuel.
It was later revealed that Nibbler was, in fact, Lord Nibbler, an impossibly ancient being -- born around 274 Bce -- who could speak in a clear, deep voice. He belonged to a species that possessed fleets of tiny, adorable warships and who were occasionally kidnapped and farmed for their fuel-pooping abilities. For years, whenever someone saw Nibbler speak, he could activate his...

Horror adaptations of children's stories are on the rise, with two more set for 2024 release. Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey sparked interest in other horror versions, making way for Bampire and Your Monster. Artists are modernizing public domain stories with a horror twist, aiming to shock and captivate audiences.
Among the ongoing trends in the horror genre are adaptations of children’s stories and fairy tales, and two more are secretly getting horror adaptations in 2024. Thanks to some classic tales and characters meant for a young audience becoming public domain, many artists have seized the opportunity to modernize them and give them a twist. In many cases, these changes are towards a horror route, giving a whole new perspective to these once innocent characters and stories, but not without a good dose of controversy.

The films competing for the 2024 Best Production Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our odds currently indicate that “Barbie” (17/5) will be the winner, followed in order of likelihood by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Oppenheimer” (4/1), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
After 1970 and 2004, this is only the third year in Oscars history that the same five movies are nominated for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design. The two present lineups differ, however, in that none of the former’s individual contenders are past winners, constituting the first such instance in the category since 2009. In that case, the only returning nominees were art director Nathan Crowley (“The Dark Knight”) and set decorator Gary Fettis (“Changeling”).
Leading this year’s production design hopefuls in terms of total career nominations are “Barbie” duo Sarah Greenwood and Katie Spencer, who earned joint recognition for half a dozen earlier films.

The films in contention for the 2024 Best Costume Design Oscar are “Barbie,” “Killers of the Flower Moon,” “Napoleon,” “Oppenheimer,” and “Poor Things.” Our current odds posit “Barbie” (10/3) as the frontrunner, followed in order by “Poor Things” (7/2), “Killers of the Flower Moon” (9/2), “Oppenheimer” (9/2), and “Napoleon” (9/2).
Since she was previously feted for “Anna Karenina” (2013) and “Little Women” (2020), Jacqueline Durran’s ninth career nomination for “Barbie” could make her the dozenth costumer with three or more wins. As is the case this time, her 2020 bid resulted from a collaboration with director Greta Gerwig, while her 2013 one was her third of five for a Joe Wright film, after “Pride & Prejudice” (2006) and “Atonement” (2008) and before “Darkest Hour” (2018) and “Cyrano” (2022). Director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo shared a setback for Disney's live-action The Sword in the Stone, leaving its future uncertain. Despite hopes for the project, the film is currently not in production, raising doubts about its realization. Disney's mixed adaptation reception and lack of updates on other projects may be affecting the fate of The Sword in the Stone.
Disney's ambitious project to reimagine its 1963 animated classic The Sword in the Stone as a live-action feature has encountered a significant setback. The story, which charmingly unfolds the early adventures of a young King Arthur under the guidance of the wise wizard Merlin, has long been a cherished part of Disney's animated repertoire.
However, in a recent conversation with Screen Rant, director Juan Carlos Fresnadillo shared a disheartening update on the status of The Sword in the Stone. The director revealed that the project is currently not in production, casting doubt on its future.

Fox and Fremantle have tapped Lara Olsen (“Spinning Out”) to serve as showrunner for the new “Baywatch,” which was originally created by Michael Berk, Douglas Schwartz and Gregory J. Bonann. Starring David Hasselhoff, “Baywatch” originally ran from 1989 to 1999 and then was retooled as “Baywatch: Hawaii” from 1999 to 2001.
Olsen, Berk, Bonann and Schwartz will serve as exec producers on the one-hour drama, which comes from both Fremantle and Fox Entertainment. Here’s the new logline: “Daring ocean rescues, pristine beaches, and iconic red bathing suits are back, along with a whole new generation of Baywatch lifeguards, who navigate complicated, messy personal lives in this action-packed reboot that demonstrates there’s the family you’re born...

Fresnadillo's Damsel may provide the key to jumpstart Disney's live-action Sword in the Stone remake after years of delay. The director's success with Damsel could inspire Disney to prioritize The Sword in the Stone, potentially reviving the project. The classic King Arthur story faces marketing challenges, but Fresnadillo's vision could bring new life to the 61-year-old movie.
Disney's The Sword in the Stone live-action remake was announced back in 2015, and Netflix's Damsel may be the key to getting it made after all these years. The House of Mouse has been remaking several of its animated classics into live-action movies, but some seem to have gotten stuck in development hell. Among these is the 1963 movie The Sword in the Stone, which was supposed to be directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo. While it seems this project has been put on hold, Fresnadillo's Netflix fantasy movie may be the answer to getting the ball rolling again.

Daniel Radcliffe earned $1 million for his role in the first Harry Potter film, with his pay increasing substantially with each sequel to a whopping $50 million for the last two movies. Emma Watson initially made less than $1 million for her role as Hermione Granger, but her salary rose considerably throughout the series, earning $30 million for the two-part finale. Rupert Grint, who played Ron Weasley, also started with a salary less than $1 million but ended up earning $30 million for his performance in the final two Harry Potter films. However, Grint has the lowest net worth compared to Radcliffe and Watson due to a quieter post-Harry Potter career.
The Harry Potter franchise has made over $9.5 billion worldwide for Warner Bros. (via The Numbers), but how much did Daniel Radcliffe make from Harry Potter? Fans still wonder this for Radcliffe and his fellow main co-stars. The long-running series brought together Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson,...

Word has it that Sean Bailey had been looking to move on. However the news this week Disney’s president of motion picture studios has stepped down has much to do with CEO Bob Iger’s urgent course correction at a storied studio that just endured a relatively poor year at the box office and is facing pressure from activist shareholders to improve the stock price.
Bailey, a 15-year veteran of the company, was the executive who mined Disney’s animation vault and adapted them into live-action tentpoles that often crushed it at the box office.

I’m trying to decrease my usage of “good” and “bad” when discussing art. They are lazy shortcuts that distill creativity into the simplest qualitative assessments as if art is worth boiling down to a pure binary outlook. It’s why whenever any movie is widely labeled “good,” I can’t help but approach it with some increased skepticism. Conversely, “bad” movies always pique my interest, and I’m more likely to look deeper for their successful elements than what I find from the consensus.

Lilo & Stitch is getting the live-action treatment at Disney, and it will be released much sooner than fans think. The original 2002 Lilo & Stitch was a unique project for Disney because it wasn’t based on any previous material like its other animated movies. Still, nonetheless, it proved to be more successful than they had planned, birthing two movies, three animated television series, and the upcoming live-action remake. This upcoming remake is another film to join the slate of Disney live-action remakes like Beauty and The Beast, The Little Mermaid, The Lion King, Mulan, and Peter Pan and Wendy.

Executive turnover dialed up the palace intrigue in the Magic Kingdom this week.
Walt Disney Studios announced on Monday that 15-year veteran Sean Bailey would step down as president of its motion picture production group – a job in which he oversaw splashy live-action remakes of beloved animated properties. In his place, Searchlight Pictures co-head David Greenbaum was elevated and will report directly to top film boss Alan Bergman.
A creative shuffle amongst senior Disney film executives was always going to happen, many industry insiders who spoke with Variety said. As Disney CEO Bob Iger continues to aggressively cut costs amid a nasty proxy battle with billionaire investor Nelson Peltz – and the company’s movies suffer from an uncharacteristic box office slump and creative torpor – many saw a move like Bailey’s as inevitable.
“Disney film needs a shot in the arm, clearly,” said one top agent speaking on the condition of anonymity.

The Jackson 5 have found their harmony once again for the upcoming biopic “Michael” from director Antoine Fuqua and Oscar-winning producer Graham King.
After a worldwide search led filmmakers to cast Jackson’s nephew, Jaafar Jackson, as the King of Pop, with 9-year-old Juliano Krue Valdi as the younger Michael, fans have been eagerly waiting to see who would round out the rest of the Jackson family.
The film, which is scheduled to hit theaters on April 18, 2025, is currently in production. Oscar-nominee Colman Domingo assumes the role of family patriarch Joe Jackson with Nia Long as mother Katherine Jackson, plus Miles Teller as lawyer John Branca.
Now, the eight actors who will portray Jackson’s four brothers — who come together to form the massively popular singing group the Jackson 5 — have been revealed: Jamal R. Henderson plays Jermaine Jackson in the film’s later years, while Jayden Harville plays the younger version.

Movie romances never run out of obstacles to throw in the way of the main couple, but the most iconic hurdle of all is the forbidden love story. This trope has been executed countless times throughout cinema history. There's something particularly heart-wrenching and exciting about two people who long to be together but can't, due to circumstances out of their control.
Stories such as Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet have been around for centuries, but the forbidden romance plot line is still relevant today in other variations. From blockbuster hits like Titanic to animated treasures like Beauty and the Beast, these romantic pairings fight to overcome barriers such as class, society, and rivalries to be together. While forbidden romances likely won't go away anytime soon, these couples always stand out as the most iconic.
Updated on February 26th, 2024 by Fawzia Khan: The forbidden love trope remains one of the most popular romance tropes of all time.

Alan Tudyk connects Frozen to Zootopia with his characters Duke of Weselton and Duke Weaselton. Zootopia is filled with Frozen references, from Duke Weaselton to characters dressed as Anna and Elsa. Disney loves adding Easter eggs to their films, making references to other movies like Frozen in each one.
Frozen is full of iconic characters, but many don't know that one minor character from the film actuall connects Disney's movie to another $1 billion animated hit. Disney's catalogue features all kinds of animated classics, with many of these movies becoming some of the most famous films of all time. Because of this, there are often plenty of references to Disney films in thier other movies, and Frozen is no exception.

In January of 2021, Megan Ellison got a call from Erik Lomis, the former head of distribution at her company, Annapurna Pictures, asking if she’d like to take a look at a movie whose filmmakers needed a lifeline. Disney was days away from announcing that it planned to shutter Blue Sky Studios, the 500-person, Greenwich, Connecticut-based animation studio it had inherited in the 2019 Fox acquisition, and with that closure, the Burbank media giant would be dropping Blue Sky’s most promising movie, Nimona.
“I wasn’t really engaging in new film projects at the time, but being curious, I said yes,” Ellison said, in an email.

The Coachman in Pinocchio employs magic and turns children into donkeys, while Gaston in Beauty and the Beast rejects the idea of magic and relies on physical strength. The Coachman is portrayed as a more sinister and evil character than Gaston, with the Coachman abducting children and turning them into donkeys to work in his salt mine. Gaston presents a bigger threat to the heroes in Beauty and the Beast and leads a mob against the Beast, while Pinocchio could have easily avoided the Coachman with enough care.

Valentine’s Day may be a day of love, but there’s something about fear and murder that really gets the heart racing. Forget the countless Christmas rom-coms or Technicolor musical romances out there; sometimes, the most swoon-worthy romance is one between a human and a literal monster.
On the surface, horror and romance are two genres that shouldn’t mix well together; one exposes the worst and most disturbing cruelty humanity has to offer, while the other is meant to show the most tender and beautiful feelings we have. But as long as horror has been a genre, it’s been mixed with romance to frequently stellar results. Some of the earliest horror monsters, like vampires, are inherently sexual beings: their powers clear metaphors for intercourse and their ability to allure and entice humans with their beauty a key part of what makes them dangerous. Blockbusters often make more money than award-winning films, but the latter showcases actors' talents more. The highest-grossing movies may not be actors' best movies when they have other critically acclaimed performances. The cultural impact of great movies, regardless of their commercial success, is significant for actors' careers.
For many of Hollywood’s biggest stars, their highest-grossing movie and their best movie are not one and the same. Summer blockbusters, including most superhero movie franchises, tend to make more money than complex pictures that are typically the focus of awards shows. In several cases, blockbusters have included small Easter Eggs that nod to a lead actor's previous roles, recognizing their higher status in the cultural zeitgeist.
Oscar nominees may be criticized for being slow or complicated, while action movies are more engaging. Yet, the former category typically does more to highlight an actor's talents. However, both types of movies represent important...

Williams agreed to voice the role for only $75,000, showing his respect for animation as a medium and his desire to be part of the animation tradition. Disney breached their agreement with Williams by using his voice to sell merchandise in advertisements, leading to a damaged relationship between Williams and the company.
Robin Williams' Genie in Aladdin is one of the most iconic Disney creations of all time and the deal he made when he signed on makes the performance even better. Disney's Aladdin began life as a pitch from Howard Ashman, a lyricist whose work includes The Little Mermaid and Beauty and the Beast, in 1988. Directors Ron Clements and John Musker then joined the project shortly before Ashman's death in 1991. One of the characters...
