As Hitler starts the war, the Berlin Winter family and their friends are confident it will soon be won. Popular Wilhelm, a rising army lieutenant, promises their father to look after 'rebel' kid brother Friedhelm, a broody intellectual, whose doubts about the propaganda's triumphant picture soon start proving more then justified, as the Russian winter proves as cruel to them as the SS-enforced treatment of Slavic and Jewish 'subhuman' locals. Their friend Viktor, son and heir of naively loyal tailor Goldstein, must flee, which is only possible if his girlfriend seduces an SS officer, who also helps launch her singing career. Did You Know?

The burnt Russian tank seen in Martyukhova is a T-34-85 which was not deployed until 1943-1945 while the scene takes place in 1941 so it should have been a T-34-76. This is probably due to them being less produced. See more »

Interesting story and very well put together
29 March 2013 | by michel-schimbergSee all my reviews

This three part series from the point of view of five German friends during world war two was a lot more then I expected in the first place, not only are they cinematically very well made, also is it showing very well the dark sides of the war. The character development of the 5 friends during the curse of the three series is only showing how well the acting is. Considering this is a "television show" and there is not really a big budget behind the project, and no fancy director it's very well put together. It had to be done at some point and I'm glad Germans were able to put it together in such a good way. During the time the show was running on the television and it was discussed in the newspaper that young people don't get told a lot from the war from their parents or grandparents for obvious reasons and the series is probably a good way to give them understanding why they have concerns sharing memories. This is also the explanation of the name of the series.
