House of the Dragon is now rolling the cameras as the highly anticipated prequel saga returns very soon with its third installment. The show ended on a huge—albeit underwhelming—cliffhanger in the previous season, although it promises a massive and bloody opening in Season 3 with the Battle of the Gullet.
The showrunner even revealed that this is going to be the biggest production yet for the franchise, given how much significant events are expected to take place. Is it going to wrap up the story by the end of it? Here’s what we know.

George R.R. Martin has been very open about his criticism of House of the Dragon. He also writes his observations and suggestions on how to improve the story.

After Game of Thrones crashed and burned with its horrific season 8 ending, HBO knew it had to fix things starting with giving George R.R. Martin’s real power. This time, he reportedly has the final say on key creative decisions in A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms.
It’s a major shift from when he was sidelined during GoT. Now, Martin’s back in control, and it’s HBO’s way of ensuring they don’t botch another Westeros tale. For once, the man behind the world actually gets to steer the ship (and I couldn’t be happier!).

Good news: HBO is adapting George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas as a new show called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Set around 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, it tells the story of a very tall knight named Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminutive, sassy squire Egg. There are no dragons or huge wars, just two people exploring the Seven Kingdoms having adventures. It's lighter in tone and smaller in scale than what fans are used to, and everything we've heard about it is very positive.
Bad news: while A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was originally going to air on HBO and HBO Max this year, it recently got delayed into early 2026. We've still seen precious little of it, but the actors involved only have good things to say. That includes English actor Finn Bennett, who made an impression in...

Everyone is waiting for the upcoming third installment of House of the Dragon, and since it’s still in production and we have to wait for another year, we’re all just looking forward to the next spinoff, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Unfortunately, we won’t have it this year.
That’s right, the schedule for the upcoming adaptation of Tales of Dunk & Egg has been moved to 2026, the same year the Targaryen prequel series is expected to return to the small screen. While it’s exciting to know that we might have two Game of Thrones spinoffs in the same year, it actually spells bad news.

HBO is filming the third season of House of the Dragon as we speak. Season 2 ended with the Seven Kingdoms in the midst of a civil war, with some huge clashes right around the corner. Season 3 will kick off with the Battle of the Gullet, a battle fought on sea between Corlys Velaryon's fleet and a pirate fleet captained by Sharako Lohar. And if you've read George R.R. Martin's book Fire & Blood, you know that some winged warriors might also show up...
The cast and crew of House of the Dragon have been talking up the Battle of the Gullet as something very special. Abubakar Salim, who plays Corlys' illegitimate son Alyn of Hull, will be heavily involved. As Salim put it on Twitter/X, "fighting is tough."

We're getting our first look at the new "Harry Potter" series already, thanks to a shot of what appears to be the set for 4 Privet Drive.
During his summers away from Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, the titular Harry Potter — who was played by Daniel Radcliffe in the original film franchise and, as of this writing, will be played by a young unknown in the TV show — is forced to spend time with his non-magical Muggle relatives, the Dursleys. Not only are the Dursleys really mean to Harry, but Privet Drive, in the fictional town of Little Whinging, just seems like an unpleasant place to spend time. Based on social media posts, it looks like the Privet Drive set — meaning, the "entire" street — is being built right now.
There are some specific reasons why this is notable. First of all, we know some of the cast of HBO's forthcoming "Harry Potter" series,...

A lot happened over the past seven days in the worlds of sci-fi, fantasy, movies, TV and books. If only there was a weekly post where we went over it all. Wait a minute...there is, it's called WiC Weekly, and you're reading it right now!
Let's start with books. We talked to fantasy author Brandon Sanderson about all sorts of things, starting with his plans for the next leg of his Mistborn series:

Unfortunate news has emerged for fans eager to return to Westeros as Warner Bros. Discovery has officially pushed back the release of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series.
Speaking during the company's recent upfronts, Casey Bloys, Chairman and CEO of HBO and Max Content, confirmed that the show will now premiere in early 2026 instead of the originally planned late 2025 window.
The six-episode first season, which adapts George R.R. Martin’s novella The Hedge Knight, is now targeting a debut sometime between January and March 2026.
Set about 100 years before the events of Game of Thrones, the series will follow the legendary journey of Ser Duncan the Tall—better known as Dunk—and his unlikely companion, the young Aegon V Targaryen, affectionately called Egg. Their tale of friendship, knighthood, and hidden lineage unfolds against the backdrop of a realm still reeling from Targaryen rule.

Yesterday, we learned that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms — a new Game of Thrones prequel series based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas — was getting delayed. Originally, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was going to air sometime this year, but now it's going to come in the winter of 2026, which at least means it'll come early in the year.
Still, it's annoying, because TV fans are getting more and more fed up with having to wait eternities between new seasons of their favorite shows, especially when episode counts seem to be dropping. Granted, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms hasn't aired yet, so we can't miss what we haven't seen. But I'm afraid what this may forebode for HBO's other Game of Thrones prequel show, House of the Dragon.

There are funny moments in Game of Thrones; see Tyrion Lannister proclaiming that he drinks and he knows things, or Bronn cheerfully agreeing that he doesn't fight with honor; who would in this world? But when you think of HBO's fantasy epic, you mostly think of the serious moments: main characters getting butchered at the Red Wedding, Daenerys Targaryen burning down King's Landing, etc. The prequel show House of the Dragon has doubled down on that, giving us a deadly serious take on a story about the Targaryen family divided against itself.
But the Game of Thrones universe is a big place and there are other tones to strike. HBO is currently working on another prequel series called A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. Set decades after the events of House of the Dragon but decades before Game of Thrones,...

Yesterday, it was announced during HBO's Upfronts presentation that A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, its next Game of Thrones prequel series, won't premiere until 2026. According to Entertainment Weekly, the show is now targeting a winter release date early next year.
Obviously, we're very bummed about this news. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk & Egg novellas, which follow the honorable knight Ser Duncan the Tall and his diminutive squire Egg on various adventures around the Seven Kingdoms. It's a lighter, more fun sort of story than Game of Thrones or House of the Dragon, and since HBO previously teased that it was coming sometime in 2025, I've been really looking forward to watching it.

HBO delivered a blow for those waiting for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, and now it may have a knock-on effect on the release of another Game of Thrones spinoff series. What does it mean for House of the Dragon season 3?
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was initially supposed to arrive in 2025. That was word from HBO back when the first teasers and casting details arrived. In fact, production is underway, so it seemed almost certain that a 2025 release date was possible.
Then HBO delivered the blow at the Upfronts. As Variety reports, the series will arrive in 2026, and while it’s “winter 2026,” according to Casey Bloys, it’s still later than we hoped. At the same time, this could have a knock-on effect for House of the Dragon.

The other day, we learned that HBO was delaying its new Game of Thrones prequel show A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. The series, based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin, was originally due to air later this year. Now it's gonna air sometime in 2026.
Why did this happen? We don't know. Filming on the first season wrapped in September of 2024. Early impressions of the show have been great, and HBO executives have talked openly about planning more seasons. If I want to put an optimistic spin on this news, I might speculate that HBO wants the first season to air next year so there isn't a huge gap between it and season 2, which may or may not happen. Is A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Getting Delayed? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
The Game of Thrones world just can’t seem to catch a break. Fans, already bracing themselves for the long wait between seasons of House of the Dragon, now have to shelve their hopes for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms until 2026. According to Variety, what was once expected to arrive sooner has reportedly been delayed, not by a few months, as it’s skipping the entire year.

Based on George R.R. The upcoming Game Of Thrones spin-off A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms won’t now be landing in 2025 as anticipated. More here.
As summer rolls around, we’ve been patiently waiting for a release date for HBO’s upcoming Game of Thrones spin-off, A Knight Of The Seven Kingdoms. At some point soon, we imagined a shiny trailer landing and some tantalising footage of Ser Duncan the Tall and his young squire, sweeping us towards the expected release date later this year.
That’s not the case, it seems. According to Variety, the show’s launch has been pushed back into 2026 and so our wait must go on. The show officially began production last summer, and it looks like for whatever reason, won’t be ready in time to debut in 2025.
Whilst an early 2026 release date is said to be on the cards, it still seems like a real miss to us.

Welcome to a very fiery episode of Take the Black, the weekly chat show where we talk all things sci-fi, fantasy, movies, TV and books. We have some good news and some bad news this week. Watch the new episode below to learn it all:
We start with the bad news: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new Game of Thrones prequel series that was originally going to air this year and which I was looking forward to, has been delayed into 2026. I use that as an excuse to go off on HBO's parent company Warner Bros. Discovery. Why are they seemingly so unconcerned with forcing fans to wait years between seasons of their favorite shows? Do they not know they're bleeding customers that way? Why can't they settle on a name for their streaming service? Do they have a public embarrassment fetish? We explore all avenues.

Remember how we had to wait three years between season 1 and 2 of "Severance," and everybody panicked? For that matter, remember when nearly two years passed between season 1 and season 2 of "House of the Dragon" and even that felt torturous? Well, I guess we'd all better get used to this sort of thing based on an announcement from HBO about its other "Game of Thrones" spin-off and its premiere date.
"A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" was supposed to begin its run in 2025, but during the Upfronts presentations (per Entertainment Weekly), the premium network -- which also announced it's changing the name of its proprietary streamer back to HBO Max (one of the least surprising moves of all time) -- said that "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" will now have to wait until 2026.

Well, like father, like son. HBO Entertainment, which has been working tirelessly, seems to be under a barrage of bad news and delays. There’s some delay, and this time, it’s not from George R.R. Martin!
Of course, his unfinished novels The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring are beyond delayed (14 years to be exact), another HBO series which is also an adaptation of one of the books of Martin… has been delayed to 2026 as well, and fans aren’t too happy about it.

The upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been delayed to a different year. The spin-off series, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, is based on George R.R. Martin's beloved Dunk and Egg novellas. Timeline-wise, the show will be set roughly halfway between House of the Dragon and Game of Thrones, in an era of Targaryen rule after the believed extinction of dragons. The show was initially intended to be released on HBO in late 2025.
Warner Bros. Discovery revealed that the release date for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms has been pushed back to Winter 2026 (via Variety). Strap in for bad news: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, HBO's new Game of Thrones prequel series, has been delayed to 2026, according to Variety. Originally it was going to air this year. We don't have an exact premiere date.
That means that 2025 will pass without any new Game of Thrones programming. The second season of House of the Dragon, HBO's first Game of Thrones prequel show, aired last year. They're filming the third season of that series right now, and I assumed that they were targeting a 2026 release date. But with the news of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms being pushed back to next year, I wonder if House of the Dragon season 3 might get pushed back to 2027.
These days, studios are asking fans to wait longer and longer between new seasons of their favorite shows, and Warner Bros. Discovery — the parent company of HBO — is one of the worst offenders.

“A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” – the latest “Game of Thrones” spinoff – has shifted its release to early 2026, the network announced during Warner Bros. Discovery’s upfront presentation on Wednesday.
No official release date has been set, though Wbd previously teased a late 2025 premiere for the offshoot of George R.R. Martin’s hit franchise. The delay was revealed in a first look at the series that screened exclusively during the presentation. The trailer ended with a title card that read “2026.” Before that, HBO president and CEO Casey Bloys hinted at a winter release for the show — meaning it will likely premiere early in the year.
The series is based off a collection of novellas from author George R.R. Martin that follows the adventures and misadventures of Ser Duncan the Tall, the future Lord Commander of the Kingsguard, and his young squire Egg — who becomes the future King Aegon V Targaryen.

The Game of Thrones universe has been hit with yet another disappointment. After years waiting for House of the Dragon Season 3, fans will have to continue their patience for the arrival of the spin-off series, AKnight of the Seven Kingdoms. Previously understood to have a premiere date of this year, Variety reported that it has now been pushed to 2026. The series is based off of George R.R. “A century before the events of ‘Game of Thrones,’ two unlikely heroes wandered Westeros… a young, naïve but courageous knight, Ser Duncan the Tall, and his diminutive squire, Egg. Set in an age when the Targaryen line still holds the Iron Throne, and the memory of the last dragon has not yet passed from living memory, great destinies, powerful foes, and dangerous exploits all await these improbable and incomparable friends.”

Bad news for Game of Thrones fans, as the next spin-off scheduled to be released on HBO, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, has been delayed. The spin-off, based on one of George R.R. Martin's novellas, was first announced back in 2022, following the franchise-saving success of House of the Dragon. HotD reignited passion in the franchise after the abysmal ending of Game of Thrones' eighth season.A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is one of the most hotly anticipated spin-offs among die-hard readers, but our journey to Westeros will have to wait a little longer.
The news comes via a Variety report, which confirmed when A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms will debut on HBO and Max. Technically, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms was never given an official release date — meaning it's less of a delay and more of a disappointing release date announcement. Director Alan Taylor has a very particular speciality: killing characters on HBO shows. Whether it's Christopher Moltisanti on The Sopranos, Wild Bill Hickok on Deadwood, Julius Caesar on Rome, or Ned Stark in Game of Thrones, characters best beware when Taylor approaches set.
Last year, Taylor claimed another victim: Princess Rhaenys Targaryen of House of the Dragon, who fell to her death after battling her nephews in the sky astride her dragon in the best episode of the show's second season. "It is emotional because she'd been there as a big part of Season 1, and knew that her time was coming," Taylor told Gold Derby. "There's a sadness there that the actor is not going to be around anymore, because they become such a part of the intense family. For many actors, and I think it was true of her, there's a relief as well. She savored that she knew...

Ramin Djawadi was a successful composer before he crafted the opening theme song for Game of Thrones, but that thing really put him on the map. Since then his career has exploded. In addition to composing many iconic songs played on Game of Thrones, he also worked on shows like Westworld, Eternals, 3 Body Problem, and the Game of Thrones prequel show House of the Dragon. And why not? The person who composed this banger should be rewarded:
That opening theme song is so memorable that HBO used it again for House of the Dragon; the third season of that show will air sometime next year. Soon, HBO will premiere a new Game of Thrones prequel series: A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, based on George R.R. Martin's Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas. And it sounds like this will be the first Game of Thrones show not to benefit from Djawadi's talents.

The backlash on the season finale of Game of Thrones was perhaps one of the biggest phenomena in the world of television. Everyone tuned in to the show only to feel betrayed and disappointed by how things went down—either with the death of Daenerys Targaryen or Bran Stark becoming king, no one ever said they were happy.
George R.R. Martin was well aware of this strong reaction from fans, people who had been loyal viewers and supporters of his books. For the author, it did not bother him if these members of the audience would not watch any more projects from the Game of Thrones franchise.

House of the Dragon ran into some issues with A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin, who was not totally on board with what was put on screen. Ryan Condal, a long-time fan of the franchise and the creative behind House of the Dragon, talked about how he felt about Martin’s comments.
Fire and Blood, which largely serves as the source material for the show, is not a traditional narrative, but an in-universe history that deals with the Targaryen line of the monarchs. It seems that the main point of contention between Condal and Martin came when talking about the practical application of the storylines that were in place.

The HBO show of the moment is The Last of Us, the network's adaptation of Naughty Dog's series of video games. The show follows Joel and Ellie, two survivors of the zombie apocalypse.
Well, it used to follow Ellie and Joel. In last week's episode, Joel was brutally murdered by a new character named Abby. Meanwhile, back in the fortified settlement of Jackson, Joel's brother Tommy helped defend the snow-bound town from a massive zombie attack. That battle scene reminded more than a few people of the Massacre at Hardhome from another huge HBO show, Game of Thrones; in that battle, Jon Snow defended the fortified snowbound town of Hardhome from a massive zombie attack. The similarities were so obvious that even the official Max channel pointed it out:
Same mentality, different realm. #TheLastOfUs pic.twitter.com/OKuQSfHEGx

Killing Joel is another Game of Thrones-esque move.

It’s not a secret anymore that we’re getting a handful of prequels thanks to the popularity of Game of Thrones and the success of House of the Dragon (even if it’s debatable). This year, HBO is bringing a new epic based on George R.R. Martin’s novella, Tales of Dunk and Egg. While fans were looking forward to more stories based in Westeros, the author was surprisingly caught off guard by the studio’s decision.
It takes a lot of risk and courage to attempt to replicate the global phenomenon of Game of Thrones, but somehow, the latest prequel series managed to take the world by storm. With this, HBO must be very confident enough to greenlight more spinoffs.

Jon Snow was one of the most popular characters to come out of Game of Thrones, which is saying something because that show had a ton of popular characters. For eight seasons, Jon was played by Kit Harington, but in the final two seasons, actor Connan Aaron worked as his stand-in for some scenes.
Now, Connan Aaron is getting a chance to have a proper role in Westeros. According to Redanian Intelligence, he'll appear in the upcoming Game of Thrones prequel series A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms as Gowen Baratheon:

Paddy Considine played the well-meaning, prophecy-obsessed, decaying king Viserys Targaryen in the first season of House of the Dragon, HBO's Game of Thrones prequel show. His character died towards the end of that season, leaving his squabbling family members to go to war with each other over his empty throne. Since then, things have gotten pretty crazy, but Considine himself hasn't been keeping tabs on the series.
“I haven’t [been watching], no," Considine told the New York Post. "But I saw bits of Season 2, because my wife and daughter are still massive fans of the show. I just don’t get time. When I get to watch things, it’s usually like at bedtime and I fall asleep watching them.”
Considine made clear that he isn't abstaining out of disinterest; anyone who watched him on season 1 knew how committed he was to the character. For the record, he didn't watch much of that first season,...

The second season of House of the Dragon, HBO's Game of Thrones prequel series, wrapped up last year, with a third on the way. That would be out until sometime next year. But HBO isn't going to let us wait that long to return to Westeros: later this year, it will debut A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, a new prequel series set decades after the events of House of the Dragon but decades before Game of Thrones.
The new show is based on the Tales of Dunk and Egg novellas by George R.R. Martin, about a stalwart knight named Ser Duncan the Tall (Peter Claffey) and his precocious young squire, Egg (Dexter Sol Ansell). Together, they travel the Seven Kingdoms looking for work and having adventures. The show will be a lighter affair than either of its sister series; there are no dragons or huge battles. Martin himself loves...

His contribution to the world of literary fantasy and the epic worlds such written works have brought on-screen cannot be denied. George R.R. Martin is undeniably one of the greats. His work on A Song of Ice and Fire helped develop one of the greatest fantasy epics ever made on television with the advent of Game of Thrones on HBO. While the on-screen adaptation might have wrapped its story, venturing into other aspects of the lore built by Martin. The author is yet to complete the novels that will eventually make up the book series. The Winds of Winter is the sixth in a seven-book series, and Martin has been stuck on that project for 13 years. His latest update doesn't fill the heart with much optimism either.
Speaking during an interview with Time, Martin reveals that he’s “still working on” the long-awaited book, but does admit that other projects...
