Great Job, Summer! From ‘Avengers’ to ‘Incredibles,’ Better Movies Mean Better Box Office
The official movie summer season ends Labor Day, but it’s already hailed as a winner and deservedly so, particularly in comparison to the anemic summer of 2017. Studios won by doubling down on the formulas they know best (aka sequels and franchises), but with enough tweaking to improve dramatically from the year prior — $4.3 billion vs.$3.7 billion.

Summer to summer saw an increase of about 16 percent at the box office, and nine percent in ticket sales. And that doesn’t even include the $338 million earned by “Avengers: Infinity War” in its first week, which fell outside the official summer start of the first Friday in May.

So: Best summer ever? Not even close. Reviewing the last 25 years, again adjusting grosses to 2018 ticket prices, it would rank in the bottom five. Most had totals above $5 billion. But that’s the new reality of domestic moviegoing, in which foreign theaters provide two thirds

Louis Ck’s Surprise Return to Stand-Up Splits Crisis PR Experts: ‘In Comedy Timing Is Everything’

Louis Ck’s Surprise Return to Stand-Up Splits Crisis PR Experts: ‘In Comedy Timing Is Everything’
How soon is too soon? That’s the question on a lot of people’s minds following Louis C.K.’s surprise appearance at the Comedy Cellar in New York City over the weekend for his first stand-up routine since last November, when he admitted to multiple instances of sexual misconduct.

While some crisis management experts called the Emmy winner’s return to the stage premature, others told TheWrap it was as smooth a re-entry as anyone could have predicted less than a year after a very public disgrace.

“Nine months is not long enough — he came back a little too soon,” Richard Levick, chairman of crisis management firm Levick, told TheWrap. “Even Betty Ford spent more time out of circulation.”

Susan Tellem, a partner with Tellem Grody PR, Inc. in Malibu, California, agreed, telling TheWrap: “While as a crisis manager, I would have said, ‘No, do not do that’ to Louis Ck,

New Night School Trailer Tries to Smack Some Smarts Into Kevin Hart

New Night School Trailer Tries to Smack Some Smarts Into Kevin Hart
The latest trailer for Night School, starring Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish, focuses on the physical aspects of learning. The comedy is from director Malcolm D. Lee (Girls Trip) and follows a group of misfits who are forced to attend adult classes in the longshot chance they'll pass the Ged exam. And by the look of the newest trailer, the group is having quite a hard time trying to get used to being back in high school with their tough-as-nails teacher, played by Haddish, who puts the majority of her focus on Hart's character.

Night School was written by Kevin Hart, Harry Ratchford, Joey Wells, Matt Kellard, Nicholas Stoller, and John Hamburg. The comedy is the first screenwriting credit for Hart, aside from his standup specials. Kevin Hart is coming off of the massive success of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which is getting the sequel treatment. Hart is also

Netflix In Homestretch On ‘Black Stallions’, With Lil Rel Howery, Don Cheadle & Kevin Hart As Rival Jockeys

  • Deadline
Exclusive: In competitive bidding, Netflix is in the home stretch on Black Stallions, a pitch vehicle for Get Out’s Lil Rel Howery, Don Cheadle and Kevin Hart in a comedy about rival brother jockeys. The leads are Howery and Don Cheadle, and Hart has showy moments of his own. Jay Longino, who most recently scripted the hoops comedy Uncle Drew, will write the script.

Deals are still being made, but Hart and John Cheng are producing through Hartbeat Productions along with Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen and John Fischer, and Inny Clemmons.

Hart is coming off Jumanji: Welcome The Jungle, and upcoming are Night School and The Secret Life of Pets 2. Howery followed up playing the dogged Tsa agent in Get Out by being part of the ensemble of the Longino-scripted Uncle Drew — which Bowen produced. Howery also stars in the upcoming Fox series Rel. Indiana Jones 5 Gets New 2021 Release Date

The wait for Indiana Jones 5 just got a whole lot longer. As expected, Disney has once again delayed the release of the long-awaited follow-up to Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull in the wake of a rewrite taking place on the script. The next chapter in the franchise is now set to arrive in theaters on July 9, 2021. That bumps it almost exactly a year from its previous July 10, 2020, release date.

When Indiana Jones 5 was initially announced, Disney and Lucasfilm dated it for July 19, 2019. The consistent theme here is that they still believe this is a movie that needs to come out in the heart of the summer. Steven Spielberg is also coming back to direct, as he's helmed every other entry in the franchise to date. The biggest question mark at this point is Harrison Ford. He's still attached to give it one more go as the legendary whip-cracking,

Universal’s International Chief Duncan Clark on Bond, Grinch, Dolittle, Pokemon

  • Variety
Following the stellar overseas opening for “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom,” Universal’s international chief Duncan Clark is confident about an upcoming release slate that includes Bond 25, “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch,” “The Voyage of Doctor Dolittle,” Pokemon movie “Detective Pikachu,” and potential awards contenders like “First Man.”

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” opened recently in international markets with a monster opening weekend of $150 million. Its release shortly before the start of the FIFA World Cup could have raised eyebrows, but Clark, president of distribution at Universal Pictures Intl., is confident that the movie will continue to thrive, despite the competition from soccer.

“In many parts of the world the timeline of the World Cup will not really interfere with [the film’s performance, such as] in Asia and Latin America,” he says. “In the first two weeks of the World Cup, there is less drama and less potent matches because they are in group matches. On days when the countries play,

Summer Movie Sequels May Have Trouble Breaking Box Office Records

Summer Movie Sequels May Have Trouble Breaking Box Office Records
Over the next two weeks, we’ll see the much-vaunted releases of “Incredibles 2” (Disney) and “Jurassic World: The Fallen Kingdom” (Universal). Both anticipate opening weekends over $100 million; industry claims that these numbers are a sign of strength within the industry will surely follow.

That could be true. However, it’s easy to get excited about numbers in the heat of the moment; more meaningful — and accurate — is looking at those figures in context of past performance and the year to date.

Historical figures, adjusted for inflation, are key. Last weekend brought claims that “Ocean’s 8” had the best opening weekend of the Steven Soderbergh productions, but while it beat expectations it actually ranked fourth and last. And of course “Solo” opened to $84 million while falling far short of its goal.

Grosses for the year so far are up 4.4 percent. But by this time last year, nine films opened to

New The Grinch Poster Revealed, Trailer #2 Arrives Tomorrow

Universal Pictures has released a new poster for The Grinch, while revealing that the second trailer will be released tomorrow. The poster introduces fans to the concept of the "Resting Grinch Face," while the studio has also released a brief new video on The Grinch Twitter. The video encourages fans to tag their friends who often put their resting grinch face (#Rgf) on display. The video also features a few bits of new footage, including a tiny scene where The Grinch seemingly reacts to people tagging their friends with #Rgf, stating, "That's hurtful."

The first trailer was released back in March, and if Universal and Illumination keep following the same pattern of releasing a trailer every three months, we could get a third and/or final trailer in September, to get fans ready for the November 8 release. The first trailer offered a glimpse at The Grinch's (Benedict Cumberbatch) solitary life,

Marge Dean, head of studio, Ellation, Inc., and the Wia president, pointed out in her Summit presentation: “The world has changed a lot since last year. Last year was a real turning point for everyone, and I think the biggest change was that people started to listen to women and believe in them.”

In a sharp, brisk speech, Crommett, who has Cuban and Puerto Rican roots, drew on the example set by her grandfather, Paco Pardo – an actor, movie reviewer and early tech geek, who inspired her to pursue a path in animation – to make a case for greater diversity. “We don’t have to choose between different parts of our identity,” she said. “We have to

How Summer Blockbusters Are Dribbling Around the World Cup Schedule

  • The Wrap
Next week, the FIFA World Cup will kick off in Russia and, inevitably, monopolize the attention of countless millions of soccer fans worldwide. So if you’re a Hollywood studio with a major summer blockbuster coming out over the next four weekends, how do you work around the biggest single-event sports competition in the world?

Universal and Disney have adopted differing release strategies for their respective “Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom” and “Ant-Man and The Wasp” to deal with the singular World Cup challenge. Particularly in Europe, where several major markets have teams expected to make runs deep into the tournament. For Universal, that’s a large reason why “Fallen Kingdom” is being released this week in 48 countries, well before American audiences get to see it.

Disney Goes to the Movies to Buoy Upfront Ad Sales

  • Variety
The Incredibles – that popular Pixar family of super heroes – have long sought to keep villainy at bay and justice on the rise. Now they are taking on a new mission: helping the Walt Disney Company increase its flow of ad dollars.

Mr. Incredible, Elastigirl and the rest of their clan figures prominently into a sweepstakes that launches this week with Clorox, and will be announced via promotional spots appearing on such Disney properties as “Good Morning America” and on cable’s Disney Channels and Freeform. The ads will surface on linear, digital, and social outlets.

Walt Disney has long worked out deals that attach advertisers to its popular films, but the company is attempting to boost the experience, according to Rita Ferro, president of advertising sales for ABC-Disney TV Group and Ed Erhardt, president of global sales and marketing at ESPN.

“We are starting to evolve how we expand

Harrison Ford Takes on First Animated Movie in Secret Life of Pets 2

Harrison Ford Takes on First Animated Movie in Secret Life of Pets 2
Harrison Ford has landed his first ever role in an animated movie. The 75-year-old actor has officially boarded the cast of The Secret Life of Pets 2. According to a new report, Ford will be voicing the lead character in the upcoming animated sequel. The first movie's lead character was voiced by comedian Louis C.K. However, Illumination Entertainment parted ways with the star following a bunch of sexual misconduct allegations last year.

It's rather amazing that Harrison Ford, whose career as an actor spans more than 50 years and includes major roles in legendary franchises like Star Wars and Indiana Jones, has never voiced a role in an animated movie. This is a huge get for The Secret Life of Pets 2, especially since he isn't just voicing a small character in the movie. He's going to be the lead, which raises some questions about the direction this movie is heading.
