Storyline

Series 1 follows the early police career of young Endeavour Morse, who upon leaving his Oxford College without a degree, spending time in the Royal Signal Corps., and eventually joining the Oxfordshire Police, is transferred to CID, attaining the rank of Detective Constable. Originally starting out his career at Carshall-Newtown Police, Morse transfers to the Oxford City Police in 1965 following a murder investigation during the pilot episode. While with the Oxford City Police, Morse is taken under the wing of veteran Detective Inspector Fred Thursday. Inspector Thursday names Morse his designated "bag man" and shows him the ropes as Morse begins to solve a string of complex murders, much to the envy and annoyance of some of his superiors, particularly Detective Sergeant Jakes and Chief Superintendent Bright. Thursday and Morse's fellow officer, Police Constable Strange, try to steer the young Endeavour into taking his Sergeant's exam, so that he may be relieved of "General Duties" ... Trivia

By a strange previous casting coincidence, both Roger Allam and Shaun Evans appeared as senior and junior police officers in series 2 episode 1 of the original version of the BBC's police procedural TV Series "Ashes to Ashes". Considering that Shaun Evans would later play Morse, and Roger Allam would play his superior officer Fred Thursday in "Endeavour", it could be considered a plausible fan theory, bearing in mind the story universe revelations of the "Ashes to Ashes" series 3 finale, that the 2 officers they play in that episode of "Ashes to Ashes" could actually be Morse and Thursday. Excellent, but Allam steals the show
4 May 2014 | by Christopher MossSee all my reviews

While it is enjoyable in its own right, this series has not yet turned out to be a relative of Morse except in name. No stunning secrets are revealed for the fans of Morse. There are the little clues for the over-involved, but to be honest it's best enjoyed for its own sake. The most interesting character in it is Fred Thursday, and his fatherly care for young Morse is quite touching. The last episode of season 1, "Home" illustrates this quite nicely. Roger Allam steals the show every time! Otherwise it's pleasant to see that television is beginning to feel some nostalgia for the sixties, which are more realistically represented here than in "Heartbeat".
