Last week, Max finally released the trailer for their much-anticipated The Batman spin-off series, The Penguin, teeing up its fall release date. Overall, it looks highly reminiscent of Matt Reeves’ film, with the cinematography very much in the Grieg Fraser mode. But what else do we know about The Penguin? More than you may think.
The Penguin is set after The Batman.
The plot of The Penguin is set to follow the title character, once again portrayed by Colin Farrell, as he rises through the ranks of the Gotham City criminal underworld. After the events of The Batman and the flooding of Gotham, including the death of Carmine Falcone, Cobblepot desperately wants to fill the power vacuum. Colin Farrell has also indicated that the film will serve as an origin story for the Penguin, something we have seen twice on screen before in Tim Burton’s Batman Returns, played by Danny DeVito.

Listen up fives — and by that I mean fours. “Girls5eva” is now streaming on Netflix and you’ve run out of excuses. This heightened, hilarious series from “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt” writer Meredith Scardino is exactly the kind of bingeable romp that Netflix users allegedly crave, so why aren’t you watching, rewatching, and recommending?
The title “Girls5eva” refers to a fictitious girl group from the late-90s and early-aughts, as well as their breakout song (cause 4eva‘s too short!): Dawn (Sara Bareilles), Summer (Busy Phillips), Gloria (Paula Pell), and Wickie (Renée Elise Goldsberry). The group disbanded after fifth member Ashley (Ashley Park) drowned in an infinity pool, but 20 years later they’re making a comeback.
There was a time when “Girls5eva” would have been a surefire hit. It’s executive produced by Tina Fey and Robert Carlock, the team behind “30 Rock” and “Kimmy Schmidt,” the latter of...

Most people have a pet peeve, but for powerhouse actress Regina King, her latest project is a shot at trying to fix hers. And it’s a solution so necessary it’s been almost 15 years in the making.
Premiering March 22 on Netflix, the new biopic Shirley stars King as the indomitable Shirley Chisholm, the Brooklyn politician who made history in 1972 for being the first Black woman to run for president of the United States. While King plays the titular role, she also helped develop the film with her sister, Reina Chisholm,...

Before Carrie Coon busted ghosts with a proton pack in the Ghostbusters franchise, she battled the ghostly figures of the Guilty Remnant with a garden hose on The Leftovers. Of course, both projects are wildly different in genre and tone, but they’re two of several examples where Coon has added a welcome complexity to mother characters that is not as common as it should be. In Gil Kenan’s Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, Coon picks up right where she left off in Jason Reitman’s 2021 franchise revival, Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Her Callie Spengler character, along with boyfriend Gary Grooberson (Paul Rudd) and her two teenage children, Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) and Trevor (Finn Wolfhard), are now full-fledged Ghostbusters, operating out of the famous firehouse in New York City.
“Callie feels like a very real mom who’s maybe not always great at the job, and makes mistakes and has to make repairs.

The 75th Primetime Emmys has officially come and gone, and unfortunately for Better Call Saul, the final season of the critically and commercially reviewed series walked out empty-handed. What’s even worse is that the prequel to Breaking Bad has an unwanted record as Better Call Saul has 53 Primetime Emmy nominations and does not have a single win. Its predecessor, Breaking Bad, was an Emmy darling as it has 16 wins under its belt. The Emmys are no stranger to snubbing television content before – The Wire, The Leftovers, Peaky Blinders, and Mindhunters are some of the most notable examples.

[This story contains spoilers from the two-part season premiere of Manhunt.]
In an era of TV police and crime series like CSI and The Killing, using the forensic investigation of a crime scene, including DNA and fingerprints, to help find a killer and solve a murder is commonplace.
So Monica Beletsky, the creator of Apple TV+’s Manhunt miniseries, had a challenge when adapting the pursuit of Abraham Lincoln’s killer as a true-crime detective thriller, because Lincoln’s assassination in 1865, and the 12-day hunt for John Wilkes Booth that followed, took place well before real-life forensic science and the gathering of evidence at crime scenes had been established.
“I love the idea of, how do you find this needle in a haystack, this man who could be anywhere in North America, when you don’t have a phone, you don’t have cars or video cameras? There’s no 24-hour news,” Beletsky explains to the The Hollywood Reporter.

Anthony Boyle first heard of John Wilkes Booth, the actor who assassinated President Abraham Lincoln, on “The Simpsons”. The 29-year-old Irish actor reminisces about the episode: “It’s an episode where Bart is playing John Wilkes Booth and Milhouse is playing Abraham Lincoln and he turns around and says ‘Oh no, John Wilkes Booth,’ and Bart pops a cap in his ass and says hasta la vista baby which left a real imprint on my brain.” It’s funny that years later Boyle, like Bart Simpson himself, is now playing John Wilkes Booth on Apple TV’s “Manhunt,” out on March 15. He jokes that he tried to improv “eat my shorts” a couple times but that didn’t fly.
The miniseries follows Secretary of War Edwin Stanton (Tobias Menzies) after Lincoln’s assassination and the 12 day hunt for Booth based on James L. Swanson’s book of the same name.

"Drive-Away Dolls" may be fresh out in theaters, but the wild (and wildly entertaining) road trip comedy from Ethan Coen and Tricia Cooke has already reached one destination quicker than expected: it's now available on digital platforms.
If you missed your chance to catch "Drive-Away Dolls" in cinemas -- which, given the lackluster box office impression it made during its late February debut, wouldn't be surprising -- you can still watch the ribald queer comedy from the comfort of your living room for about the price of two matinee tickets. The movie is currently available to rent or own on premium video-on-demand platforms, including Prime Video, Apple TV, Vudu, and Google Play. Each platform seems to be offering a 4K Ultra HD rental option for $19.99, while some also include a purchase price of $29.99. When it comes to the film's rollout on the home market, though, "Drive-Away Dolls" still has some road left to travel.

Although "The Leftovers" is often considered one of the best TV shows of all time, it's worth remembering that it did not get off on the right foot. It was 2014, after all, and people were still mad at showrunner Damon Lindelof for the "Lost" finale. Half the viewers in that first season were hate-watching it, and when the series turned out to be another character-driven series with plenty of unexplained weird stuff going on, they did not hesitate to declare Lindelof a hack fraud yet again.
To be fair to the haters, early season 1 of "The Leftovers" was probably the weakest section of the entire show. Although there's a lot of great character work done here — especially Jill's chaotic friend group, whom the show left behind entirely in season 2 — those first five episodes felt a little too bleak and aimless. Every single character was miserable, perpetually angry at each other,...

Get ready for "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" this fall. Have a look at the poster for yourself.

“I did a sex scene with an A-list actress – not Nicole Kidman, who was brilliant – and she implied, in front of the crew, that I was copping a feel. Because she didn’t like me,” Christopher claimed in a new interview with The Independent.
Christopher added that he was “fortunate that happened to me before the Harvey Weinstein stuff came to light, so I wasn’t put in the stocks for it. But I’ve never felt more betrayed by a fellow actor than I did that day.”

Jennifer Coolidge’s Tanya McQuoid may have met an untimely end at the end of season 2, but that doesn’t mean that HBO’s The White Lotus is done with bringing characters back from other seasons. Natasha Rothwell, who played White Lotus employee and Tanya’s confidant Belinda Lindsey, is set to return for the show’s upcoming third season. And according to HBO and Max content chairman and CEO Casey Bloys, her return is only the beginning.
Per Bloys’ interview with Variety, White Lotus creator Mike White is planning to connect future seasons to each other by bringing back one cast member each season. Bloys is “already excited about who is going to come back for Season 4. It really is a fun model that Mike has set up.”

Better Call Saul’s Recording-Breaking 53rd Emmys Snub Isn’t Affecting Fans, One Says “It Has Entered Vaunted ‘Too Good For Emmys’ Pantheon… (Photo Credit – IMDb)
“S’all Good, Man,” this is what Bob Odenkirk would say to his fans who are going crazy on the internet for Better Call Saul’s latest record. It’s not a record to be proud of up, but it also isn’t a record that should matter to anyone in 2024. Breaking Bad‘s classic prequel series has set a record of earning 53 nominations at the Emmys 2024 without winning a single award.
The show ended its six-season run, and there won’t be any more Saul Goodman from hereon. Yes, we are grieving over the show’s ending, but the award show snubbing isn’t something the fans would even care about. It’s 2024, and a majority of us are aware of how these shows work.

Awards show junkies got everything they expected at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards. Succession and The Bear took home a truckload of golden trophies, with the former closing out its legendary run in glory and the latter just getting warmed up (Hulu’s chaotic cooking dramedy was actually cleaning up with nominations from its first season way back in 2022 due to the Emmys’ strike-related delay) These behemoths left many shows out in the cold, but none more so than Better Call Saul.
AMC’s intricate, thoughtful spinoff to Breaking Bad was nominated 53 times throughout its six seasons but never won a single statuette. Casual viewers took to social media in shock. At the same time, those in the know already had memes and other jokes ready to fire away, as it’s become somewhat of a running gag that the Bob Odenkirk-starring vehicle would never take the crown. "Better Call Saul" is officially one of the best Emmy-losing shows of all time. During Monday's 75th Primetime Emmys telecast, the acclaimed AMC series went home empty-handed for the sixth season in a row, bringing its tally up to an impressively depressing zero wins and 53 losses. According to Variety, that means the drama has the worst Emmys track record of any nominee in the award show's history.
Emmy voters clearly have a penchant for acknowledging the "Breaking Bad" prequel enough to nominate it in several key categories, yet leave it out in the cold when the time comes to actually hand out trophies. Most recently, the show earned nods for stars Rhea Seehorn and Bob Odenkirk, as well as writers Peter Gould and Gordon Smith. "Better Call Saul" also made it into the competitive Outstanding Drama Series category -- as it has every year since its release. The specific episodes...

Every now and then an esteemed actor from the posh theater world decides to make the move over to movies and television to slum it with us nerds. When Carrie Coon did so in 2014 with dual TV/movie roles in Gone Girl and The Leftovers, the unwashed entertainment masses all had the same reaction: “Now where have you been all our lives?!?”
After a successful career treading the boards on Broadway, Coon is now a pop culture mainstay and we couldn’t be happier about it. The Copley, Ohio-native absolutely shines in any role she takes, no matter how prominent or minor. From Nora Durst on The Leftovers to Gloria Burgle on Fargo season 3 and beyond, Coon quite simply goes hard in the paint.
Next up, Coon will be introduced to an even wider audience than ever before with the announcement that she’ll be headlining season 3 of HBO’s The White Lotus.

The fourth installment of HBO’s True Detective series is poised to be the spookiest yet. The pair have a tense past, not only with each other, but with others in their small town.

Financial details of the deal weren’t disclosed. It’s the first investment by RedBird Imi into scripted entertainment. Media Res founder and CEO Michael Ellenberg will retain a majority ownership and continue to run day-to-day operations of the company, while Zucker will take a seat on the board.

RedBird Imi, a joint venture investment firm led by Jeff Zucker, has taken a stake in The Morning Show production entity Media Res.
Founded by CEO Michael Ellenberg, a former HBO exec, Media Res also produces another notable Apple TV+ title, Pachinko.
An announcement about the investment said it will “fuel Media Res’ growth as a leading independent studio,” helping it expand in scripted series and also scale its activity in film and non-fiction.
The investment is RedBird Imi’s first in a scripted production outfit. Zucker, who wound down a lengthy run at CNN in 2023, later that year came aboard RedBird Imi, which is owned by private equity firm RedBird Capital and Abu Dhabi-based International Media Investments.
Other investments during the company’s first year include EverWonder Studios, Hidden Pigeon Company and Front Office Sports.

After landing her long-overdue first nomination last year, for her lead performance on the Showtime hit “Yellowjackets,” the New Zealander added not one, but two bids to her tally this past July, including one for her sinister guest turn on “The Last of Us.”
As Kathleen, the ruthless leader of a resistance group that freed Kansas City from military rule, Lynskey appears in the fourth and fifth episodes of the post-apocalyptic drama, of which the latter, “Endure and Survive,” serves as her Emmy submission. After it’s made clear that Kathleen will stop at nothing to hunt down and execute the man (Best Drama Guest Actor nominee Lamar Johnson) who ratted out her resistance leader brother, she...
