The show's theme music is from the Overture to the opera "Ruslan and Ludmilla", which was written by the Russian composer Mikhail Glinka during the 1830s and '40s. Glinka is regarded as a founding father of Russian classical music and the Overture is still a staple in the repertoires of symphony orchestras around the world.

In Season 2 Episode 9 called "Godzilla And A Sprig Of Mint" when Christy (Anna Faris) is asked to name some of her friends she starts naming the female characters of Friends (Rachel, Phoebe and Monica). Faris had a recurring role during the final season of that series as Erica, the woman who was giving her twins to Monica for adoption.

Several characters share last names with players from the Oakland Raiders NFL team. Jim Plunkett (Christy, Bonnie and family) was a quarterback in the 1980s, Fred Biletnikoff (Alvin) a receiver in the 1970s and Sebastian Janikowski (Adam) a kicker in the 2000s. Also Cornerback Lester Hayes (Candace), Tight End Dave Casper (Steve) and Hall of Fame Quarterback Ken Stabler (Ray). Additionally Emily Osment plays Jody Hubbard (RB Marv Hubbard), Chris Pratt makes an appearance as Nick Banasak (RB Pete Banasak), and Rosie O'Donnell plays the part of Janine Blanda (QB, K George Blanda)
