        An effective Gothic horror throwback

In the middle of WWII, a group of nuns at a remote monastery already battling their faith are soon confronted by a series of bizarre confrontations with their other members following the arrival of a mysterious infant that they soon learn is the cause of the deadly events unfolding.

Overall, there's quite a lot to like with this one. One of the stronger features here is a strong storyline that gives this one a chance to indulge in a solid set of old-school Gothic horror tropes. The isolated monastery that already features several participants fully fighting with their spirituality during the war at the time offers a great way to provide a blanket baseline for the group to struggle with their faith before the more overt supernatural shenanigans start. As we get a fine background on the women staying there and why the one who's lost their faith continually leaves to the confusion of the more devoted one who continually seeks to try to save her much to the befuddlement of the others there, creating a fine sense of tension alongside some of the other tangents explored here that would be expected in a religious convent including the desire to remain virtuous and pious in such an environment. That gets explored rather well with the baby's arrival and what happens following the group's attempts to care for it. Initially doing the expected and caring for the infant, the more devoted one is immediately quick to judge it as a demonic force which comes as a shock based on how she was portrayed until then. Turning quickly into a solid series of confrontations offering a great setup with the nuns trying to go about their lives and care for the new baby while the one affected by the idea of the baby's origins leads to a strong series of combative confrontations with the convent trying to keep it safe from her advances. The idea of it demonically influencing everything that happens with the eerie whispers and voices or even just being the beginning stage for the incidents that follow further leading her into the belief that she's right causes this to be quite fun By the time the final half arrives and the full extent of everything going on comes into focus, the fact that it's built these storylines well enough before then allows the action to take more of an influence from these factors makes for a great time. The now-possessed nun going around under the guise of taking instructions from the Satanic infant in their care makes for a solid series of encounters taking out the other nuns in the convent before the final encounters bring about some intriguing twists and allegiance switching that come off incredibly well as the bloody action is all quite fun. The one issue it might have is the slow beginning where the pacing focusing on building up the girls and the different members of the convent might make it start a bit slower than expected as this goes in-depth enough on their situation the baby appears quite late in the running time but it's not in the slightest bit as detrimental as it should be.

Rated Unrated/R: Graphic Violence, Full Nudity, and Language.

        9's and 10's?

There is a reason why actors should only act, why writers should only write and why directors should only direct, and that is because any attempt to do more than one results in a movie such as this. A mess.

When you write a scene and envision it in your head as a potential director, you miss things a third party outsider will catch. Your script was poorly written and lacked depth. An interesting story, hardly original but still poorly scripted because you were not thinking as a writer but as a potential director of what you wrote.

        Bad idea.

The movie was slow, boring at times and poorly assembled, which is why I am astounded by the 9 and 10 scores other reviewers gave it. Friends or crew members perhaps?

Acting was over rated and over the top, with zero emotional investment in anyone. In the end I was hoping a tidal wave would appear and engulf everyone.

In future please act, write or direct. Do not think you can do more than one thing and do it well. Look at Megapolis, a $125 million budget disaster because no one had the guts to tell Francis Ford Coppola that he could not write, but he wrote and directed it, flushing down his career.

Learn from Francis and dont multitask.

        This was terribly boring...

Right, well the cover/poster for this 2025 horror movie titled "The Baby in the Basket" definitely was interesting enough to catch my attention.

Sure, I had never heard about the movie prior to watching it, but it being a horror movie was sufficient to make me opt to spend 100 minutes on watching it.

But talk about a swing and a miss from directors Andy Crane and Nathan Shepka.

The storyline in the movie was insanely boring and uneventful, and that made for an abysmal viewing experience. I was expecting some horror here, and the only horror that transpired on the screen was how utterly boring and pointless the narrative was. So writers Tom Jolliffe and Nathan Shepka completely failed to conjure up something enjoyable for the directors to bring to the screen.

I was not familiar with a single actor or actress on the cast list. And while the script and narrative was utterly boring and gave the performers precious little to work with, then the acting performances were actually fair enough.

The best thing about "The Baby in the Basket" was the movie's cover/poster, sad but true.

If you enjoy horror movies, spare yourself the anguish and don't waste your time, money or effort on this dumpster fire of a movie. Some of us literally suffered through this, so you don't have to; you're quite welcome.

My rating of this 2025 movie lands on a generous two out of ten stars.
