Some 17 years after they worked on a case together, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, then with the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division are re-interviewed about a case they worked together. They had only been partners for a few months when a naked woman's body was found in a farmer's field. She was posed kneeling before a tree with a crown of deer antlers on her head. The victim is identified as Dora Lange who, as Cohle had predicted, worked as a prostitute. Hart is a family man who does his best to get to know his new partner but Cohle reveals little of himself other than he is divorced and had a child who died. In the course of their investigation, they take an interest in another case, that of Marie Fontenot, a young girl who disappeared some time ago. They may have also found a link between the two cases. Did You Know?

According to the show's creator, Nic Pizzolatto, Matthew McConaughey "has this incredibly complicated chart of where Rust Cohle is emotionally and physically at every beat of those 17 years." See more »

The murder investigation was commenced on January 3, 1995. The scene depicting Marty's first visit to Rust's apartment occurred about two months early. During the visit, there is a shot showing a number of homicide and serial killer books. One book is called "Serial Killers" which was not published until June 15, 1995. A second book "The Encyclopedia of Forensic Science" by Brian Lane was not published until 2005. A third book, and the most prominently place one, called "Practical Homicide Investigation" 4th edition was not published until 2006. See more »

Detective Marty Hart: Can I ask you something? You're a Christian, yeah?
Detective Rust Cohle: No.
Detective Marty Hart: Well, what d'ya got the cross for, in your apartment?
Detective Rust Cohle: It's a form of meditation.
Detective Marty Hart: How's that?
Detective Rust Cohle: I contemplate the moment in the garden; the idea of allowing your own crucifixion.

Last Year It Was Breaking Bad. This Year It Is True Detective. Both Are Mind Boggling Stuff. ♦ 92%
23 February 2014 | by See all my reviews

That's what I feel after watching the premiere of HBO's latest TV series. I was taken aback by the style, the simplicity, the two lead characters & mostly the people who play them. At the end of the hour, after the final scene delivered so flawlessly by Matthew McConaughey, I decided and set my mind that this year, it is gonna be True Detective. My source of thrills, excitement & revolutionary entertainment.

Nic Pizzolatto has come out of nowhere and delivered a season premiere that is both charming & enigmatic at the same time. Two detectives going around solving a case in 1995 are brought back here in 2012 to talk shop. Why? Find it out yourselves because that is the point where you'll sit back in your swivel chair, if you are going to binge watch like me.

I check out the Wikipedia article and it tells me how every season is gonna have different actors & characters. How immense can it get now?

BOTTOM LINE: 2014 has been a good year for me. True Detective is maybe one reason. Am I using hyperbole?
