Some 17 years after they worked on a case together, Rust Cohle and Martin Hart, then with the Louisiana State Police Criminal Investigation Division are re-interviewed about a case they worked together. They had only been partners for a few months when a naked woman's body was found in a farmer's field. She was posed kneeling before a tree with a crown of deer antlers on her head. The victim is identified as Dora Lange who, as Cohle had predicted, worked as a prostitute. Hart is a family man who does his best to get to know his new partner but Cohle reveals little of himself other than he is divorced and had a child who died. In the course of their investigation, they take an interest in another case, that of Marie Fontenot, a young girl who disappeared some time ago. They may have also found a link between the two cases.

When character Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey
) asks for a beer while being interviewed he does this not only because he is a functioning alcoholic but also because he now can rest assured anything he says is inadmissible in court. See more
It is supposed to be 1995 when Cohle was at the truck stop bar talking to the sex workers and asking for Quaaludes, but Quaaludes (methaqualone) ceased production in 1985. See more
Detective Rust Cohle
Given how long its taken for me to reconcile my nature, I can't figure I'd forgo it on your account, Marty.
