Trivia

This anime was made with the use of rotoscoping. In this instance it means a live action version is shot first and then the animators trace over the footage frame by frame. See more »

Watch past episode 6
26 September 2013 | by AxeshizzleSee all my reviews

I gotta be honest here. I did not care much about the first 6 episodes of Aku no Hana. But since I don't really like to drop shows, I forced myself to continue watching. I'm happy I did.

The reason I didn't like the first half was mainly because of the main character 'Kasuga' as he endlessly frustrated me, to the point of which I wanted to punch my monitor. The only thing he had to do, was grow a friggin spine. Anyway if you get past episode 6, things get better as there is more to him (or not. depending how you look at it)

Besides my slight disenjoyment of the first 6 episodes. Aku no Hana has a very special feel to it (in a good way). As everything looks and feels realistic (not something I usually look for in anime). This realism made scenes in Aku no Hana have very high tension. This tension is similar to the tension you'd experience while watching a movie called 'Drive'. As things might be passing slowly with little dialog, you're still quietly watching because you're so interested.

Personally I didn't really mind the 'bad' rotoscoping. It bothered me a little in the first episode, but I didn't really care after that. I thought that this particular style of animation only added to the realistic feel of Aku no Hana. I probably would have enjoyed Aku no Hana less if it had a different style of animation.

The way the story was presented was comparable to how it was done in School Days or Breaking Bad. As in: it starts really small and simple, but everything just spirals out of control after that, to the point of no return.

Aku no Hana is weird and different and I like it. I wouldn't go so far as to call it a 'masterpiece', but I would call it different. It is a must watch for people that are 'a little openminded' and are looking for 'something different/special'.
