Ahead of the Doctor Who Christmas special, which is just one week away now, the BBC has dropped this short new featurette which dives behind the scenes of Peter Capaldi’s final days on set, as he prepares to say goodbye to the Twelfth Doctor.
“It’s a total privilege to be here for Peter’s exit,” explains Mark Gatiss, who’s guest starring in the episode, which is titled “Twice Upon a Time.” He then reveals that, at the same moment he was filming his interview, Capaldi was shooting his regeneration elsewhere at the studio.
In a chat with the man himself, presumably shot much earlier during production, the outgoing Time Lord said that his impending exit from the show wasn’t affecting him at that stage, as he was still knee-deep in the role.
“It’s quite odd, really. It’s this strange situation where I don’t...

Happy holidays, from the royal family!
Prince William and Kate Middleton revealed their annual Christmas card via Kensington Palace's Twitter on Monday, and needless to say, it's as cute as ever.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge both opted for blue ensembles, with William in a dapper suit and tie and Kate in a powder blue Catherine Walker suit. But per usual, it was their two children, 4-year-old Prince George and 2-year-old Princess Charlotte, who stole the show, also rocking outfits in the regal hue.
"The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are pleased to share a new photograph of their family," Kensington Palace tweeted, along with the photograph, which was shot by Getty photographer Chris Jackson at the palace earlier this year. "The image features on Their Royal Highnesses' Christmas card this year."

A24’s “The Disaster Artist” and “Lady Bird” led the pack of specialized successes, again landing in the weekend’s Top 10 chart. Both had to hold off the usual pre-holiday dip as well as the massive draw across all audiences for “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.”
A total of eight recent limited releases expanded this weekend –all their theaters combined add up to about the same number of theaters as “The Last Jedi,” but it grossed 22 times as much as the $10-million total of those eight films combined.
To a large extent grosses this week are gravy on top of past totals and more importantly a build-up to the most lucrative time of the year for adult moviegoing. That starts in earnest on Christmas Day. More viable titles are competing than most years, and not all will be optimally available. But distributors hope to regain their momentum with the return...

Paul Thomas Anderson fans are well accustomed to how instrumental Jonnny Greenwood’s music is to the auteur’s body of work. Whether it’s the foreboding strings in “There Will Be Blood” or the discordant percussion in “The Master,” Greenwood’s original scores expertly capture Anderson’s tones. This fact is especially true in “Phantom Thread,” which marks the fourth collaboration between Anderson and Greenwood.
Variety reports that Greenwood’s score has been included in 90 minutes of the 130-minute drama, which means you’ll be hearing the score in nearly 70% of the movie. Greenwood’s music has always been important to Anderson’s films, but it’s dominant in “Phantom Thread” in a way it never has been. In some ways it acts as a Greek chorus of sorts, changing and...

When A Christmas Story goes live Sunday, Jane Krakowski will be taking on a role she loved in the movie as a kid.
“I play Miss Shields, who is Ralphie’s teacher, and I love the actress who played her in the original movie,” Krakowski tells People of Tedde Moore. “I loved how much she was utilized in Ralphie’s fantasy life — it was one of my favorite parts of the movie — and they have expanded that a bit in the musical telling.”
The live version of the 1983 holiday classic will also expand on its signature line — “You’ll shoot your eye out!

She might have exited the show a whole five years ago now, but Karen Gillan is still happy to talk about Doctor Who.
While promoting her latest movie – the surprisingly great Jumanji: Welcome the Jungle – the Avengers: Infinity War actress was asked about what she thinks of Jodie Whittaker’s casting as the Thirteenth Doctor. She made clear that she’s on board with the idea of a woman playing the Time Lord and in fact, it really bothers her that a subset of fans were “skeptical” about the Doctor’s change of gender.
“That was major for the show, it’s never happened before. And there were so many people that were skeptical, and it just bothered me. Because of course a female could play a role, that’s insane.”
It’s no surprise that Karen Gillan has proven herself to be one of Jodie Whittaker’s biggest supporters.

Doctor Who fans are prepared to cry like Weeping Angels this Christmas Day as “Twice Upon a Time” is set to be the Twelfth Doctor’s final bow, with Peter Capaldi handing the keys to the Tardis to Jodie Whittaker by the end of the episode. Regenerations are usually heartbreaking fare, but one of the cast members has now suggested that this one will actually be heartwarming.
David Bradley (Harry Potter, Game of Thrones) is set to guest star in the special as the First Doctor, with Capaldi coming face to face with his original incarnation. While speaking to ComicBook.com, Bradley praised the episode for its good-heartedness and even went as far as to compare it to one of the most beloved Christmas classics of all-time.
“It’s full of good-heartedness. I would say even if you have never seen Doctor Who before, I think you will love it.

The palace plays host to three trees, one giant 15-foot Nordmann Fir, sourced from Windsor Great Park, which stands pride of place in the Marble Hall, and two "smaller" 10-foot trees at the Palace's Grand Entrance. The trees are all festooned with lights and this year are hung with dozens of bejeweled gold and velvet crowns that pay perfect homage to their royal owners. The video also reveals that the palace balustrade is decorated with giant garlands hung with jewel-colored baubles.

The incoming Doctor Who Christmas special has a lot going for it. It’s Peter Capaldi’s final hour, it sees him team up with David Bradley’s First Doctor, Pearl Mackie’s Bill will return and there’s even a guest role for Mark Gatiss. Despite all that, the big talking point is the fact that it will feature Jodie Whittaker’s debut as the Thirteenth Doctor in the episode’s last few moments.
This is something that outgoing showrunner Steven Moffat understands and accepts. In fact, he thinks the mix of excitement for the new Doctor with grief for the loss of the current actor is a classic part of the Doctor Who viewing experience.
“I must be honest, everyone’s watching for the last minute, and people are going to absolutely love Jodie. Then they’ll notice that, at the same time, they miss Peter, but it...

There are many plot holes that keep Doctor Who fans up at night. For instance, why did no one ever mention John Hurt’s incarnation of the Doctor before he was retroactively introduced in 2013? Why do the rules of regeneration change every time? And why don’t the Daleks ever just shoot the Doctor?
Of course, most of these continuity glitches have arisen simply because Doctor Who has been written by countless different writers for the past 50 years, meaning that obviously not everything will fit together smoothly. However, one fan might just have an explanation for a particular narrative conundrum that actually holds up.
The plot hole is this: why does the Doctor always encounter other Time Lords – like the Master – in chronological order? For instance, Peter Capaldi’s incarnation always bumped into Michelle Gomez’s version in a linear fashion. But why doesn’t he keep catching her out of order?...

Kelsea Ballerini called “Dibs” on multiple stunning looks for her wedding weekend!
The country princess and fellow Nashville crooner Morgan Evans tied the knot Dec. 2 in Cabo San Lucas, and People has all the exclusive details and photos from their oceanside ceremony.
Going into her wedding day, Ballerini settled on three separate outfit changes — “because duh!” she jokes.
For her ceremony on the beach, the bride went barefoot as she walked down the aisle in a flowing Berta gown — complete with a cleavage-baring, lace bodice and high slit — and at the altar, she and Evans exchanged David Yurman rings (a diamond “Love” band for her,...

Meghan Markle will spend Christmas Day with Prince Harry and the royal family, breaking tradition and making history by becoming the first royal fiancée to celebrate the holiday with them. Buckingham Palace has said Queen Elizabeth II and her family will join the congregation for a morning service at St Mary Magdalene Church at her private Sandringham estate in Norfolk on December 25. "You can expect to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry and Ms. Markle at Sandringham on Christmas Day," a Kensington Palace spokesman told reporters on Wednesday. Christmas with the future in-laws may not seem out of the ordinary, but for the royal family, it’s a total break in tradition.
This holiday season, Meghan Markle will become the first royal fiancée to spend Christmas Day with the royal family — making her the exception to traditional protocol. Prince William and Kate Middleton, for example, spent Christmas apart, despite announcing their engagement in November 2010.
But what Harry asks, the Queen is likely to grant. A family friend has told People, “If Harry asks for something, the Queen would say yes as she adores him.”

Meghan’s Christmas Prince! After weeks of speculation about Meghan Markle’s holiday plans, Kensington Palace confirmed to Et on Wednesday that Prince Harry’s fiancée will officially be joining the royal family for Christmas festivities.
“You can expect to see the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, Prince Harry, and Ms. Markle at Sandringham on Christmas Day,” a Kensington Palace spokesman tells Et.
This is a break in tradition for the royal family, who in the past have only extended Christmas invites after a couple is officially wed.
The Sandringham House is Queen Elizabeth's private estate in Norfolk, England, where the family tends to spend the holidays. Last year Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip skipped their annual trip there as they were suffering from heavy colds.
Buckingham Palace released a statement on Wednesday saying “The Queen and members of the Royal Family will attend the Morning Service on Christmas Day at Sandringham Church.”

Doctor Who Christmas specials are always a treat for the fans, but the episode due to air in just under two weeks now is a real must-see. Not only will it feature Peter Capaldi’s last hurrah as the Twelfth Doctor, with Jodie Whittaker making her debut as No. 13 by the end of the episode, but it will also see the return of the First Doctor. That’s three Doctors for the price of one!
Taking over the part of the original Time Lord is David Bradley (Game of Thrones, Harry Potter), who already has some experience with the role as he previously played First Doctor actor William Hartnell in the 2013 biopic An Adventure in Space and Time. His impersonation of Hartnell impressed fans so much, in fact, that he was a natural choice to play the Doctor for real in the special. However, it’s not something that he ever expected.

We’ve now got less than two weeks to go before Christmas Day is here. Unfortunately for Doctor Who fans though, that comes with mixed emotions. While the annual holiday special is set to give us our first glimpse at Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor, it also means we have to say goodbye to Peter Capaldi’s twelfth incarnation in the process. The Scottish actor has absolutely owned the role over the past few years and it’s going to be tough to see him go.
Now, with his exit quickly approaching, the BBC has released a short new promo that briskly runs through the greatest moments of the Twelfth Doctor from the past four years of the show. Though not terribly long, it does a good job of compressing nearly all of Capaldi’s most memorable scenes and speeches into a fairly short space of time.

Every week, IndieWire asks a select handful of TV critics two questions and publishes the results on Tuesday. (The answer to the second, “What is the best show currently on TV?” can be found at the end of this post.)
This week’s question: What are your winter holiday season viewing habits (that are not for work)? Do you have traditional go-to shows or movies? Are you looking forward to anything in particular?
Eric Deggans (@deggans), NPR
As I have written in the past, I’m not the kind of critic who loves holiday specials. Too often, they’re too hokey, too commercial, too weird (yes, Bill Murray, I still don’t get “A Very Murray Christmas”) or, in the case of countless Hallmark Channel movies, way too white. But I do have a few holiday media traditions, starting with my Spotify Holiday Tunes playlist, which gets fired up as...

Karen Gillan’s post-Doctor Who career might be going from strength to strength – for starters, she’s set to star in one of the biggest blockbusters of all-time, Avengers: Infinity War, next year – but she’s still got an eye on returning to the Tardis some day.
While talking with Radio Times ahead of the release of Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle in the UK, Gillan got chatting once again on how ecstatic she is that Jodie Whittaker has been cast as the Thirteenth Doctor, praising both the actress herself and the decision to gender swap the Time Lord.
I’m more excited than ever! I think that was the best, most perfect choice. She’s an amazing actress. I can’t wait to see what she does with the role, and I’m just so happy that they’ve cast a female, because there have been so many sceptical people for so long.
